He clearly reaches the mainstream with this album. 6.5/10 http://www.offtopic.forum/data/MetaMirrorCache/86f3ee4e33ff10869ef14aee9fbcb598.jpg Coldplay... After their first album they never really reached the same kinda level again eventhough A Rush Of Blood was still good X&Y was really dissapointing. But now they are back with their best album so far. It's still the same with a lot of fall asleep kinda tracks. But it's the first time they manage to create an image through their songs that makes you feel like they actually had fun recording that album, and that's a nice change. I really enjoy this album. 9/10 http://www.offtopic.forum/data/MetaMirrorCache/136446e22cccadf1b1d2c129261692fc.jpg NERD I love how they mix those drums and guitars with Pharrell's voice. This is another great album They don't manage to keep the slimpicity of their first album "In Search Of" but they manage to top their second release "Fly Or Die" with this one. Like the album says..they really let you see sounds through this album. They take you on a trip through fast, hard hitting club songs to heart melting story telling tracks. No other hip hop group does what they do. This is a must have for sure. 9/10 Quote

Lets face it N.E.R.D are just not relevant anymore, any credibility they had has been falling especially with Pharrels take on solo carrer and the hype for this album was pretty much non-existant... hell I didn't even know this was comming out till last week. So what you got here is a realy SLUGGER of an album & I say that not because its punchy but because its dense, heavy and clumsy. The songwriting here is sooooo repetetive, N.E.R.D have never been about the song writing but hell even by their standards this is poor! When a track riddles on for 7minutes with little or no progression and a grinding hook going OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER you will start to either think you have got a fake leak or that 'I wish they never came back' the latter is true as this my friend *taps case* is my friends copy.... o dear. http://theithacan.org/blogs/sharpnotes/files/2007/10/nerd.jpg So what, its N.E.R.D its all about the production, the are some sick beats with fine licks and hooks here right? Nope, they are so compressed that they are practically clipping as many sounds outweigh and actually interfere with the bandwidth of some sample making it a terrible album for headphones or to be turned up loud for, the hooks here are okay at best but it just makes this sound like a quick attention grabber. Problem of the album mainly inlies that they don't seem to be making music so much for fun now but they are even starting to get a lil bit pretentious........ remember about when I said they can't write a good song for shit? Well yea here is another problem the 'experiments' end up sounding like a cluster fuck of ideas and the singles are underwhelming, they have lost their swagger, cool & focus IF they focused on doing good hooks and getting the floor fillers down they would of probably pulled out a fairly decent album, but alas they did what I thought would be the case and pull out the worst album of their carrer (by a long way might I add) the break may have given them new ideas but like when Hitler invaded soviet Russia, its was big idea that went tits up. :D Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. At first this was a band with potential with their debut 'Parachutes' being decent with some real corking good tracks then you got 'A Rush Of Blood' then you started to think.... ooookay get on with it progress already dont be one of 'those' bands that started off with ideas but starting griding down to the same gritty radio 2 bollox. X & Y pretty much doomed the bands to 'Trendy' American teenagers and in the UK.... Dads with Ford Mondeos. So let the complete and utter tearing into commense? No! Let me clear this off quickly I always said they had potential and they ARE starting to show it again, the are some new ideas being implemented into 'Viva Lavida' and i'm all for it, it may not be overly new or interesting... or even compelling but compared to X&Y some of the songs here are pure genius. http://cache.gizmodo.com/assets/resources/2008/02/coldplay.jpg The main thing I noticed here is that Chris Martins Piano is pretty much gone! YES no more of this crappy moaning & groaning over a plodding piano, instead they focus on creating walls of sound and trying to provide more of an atmosphere rather then a tear jerker and it works for them. Don't get me wrong i'm not praising this album, it's still pretty boring but it's a step in the right direction but Coldplay have sparked a little bit more interest again and hopfully album number 5 will be the classic which I believe they are so capable of writing. It may not have the STANDOUT tracks of Parachute but as an album this is their best to date. :D Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. Stenners Posted June 15, 2008 Author Posted June 15, 2008 http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51gdxgAIDJL._SL500_AA240_.jpg Dr.Dog Fate Indie/Alternative/Pop The 60s was a fantastic era, lets not lie about it... everything was so colourful... skirts and shorts where getting shorter, LSD was mainstream & the music had real charecter to it. Now you got no real shortage of these elements in this decade but music in general does seem to have lost that personallity with so many mediocre bands its quite easy to miss out on a band such as 'Dr.Dog' who recreate the 60s sound to devestating effect WITHOUT falling into cliches. This is harmonised folk jazz pop driven in a style ala Beatles in their hay day without sounding like a rubbish tribute band, o no not at all. Dr.Dog have been releasing albums for a good 7years or so now & have been getting earthier and earthier and it continues to be evident here, their love for wimsyical bouncey 60s pop is evident more so then ever perhaps and without any REAL drawbacks, nope these are good pop tunes which are both instant but also feel timeless. http://www.offtopic.forum/data/MetaMirrorCache/76717d0d73cdc4e409231b55898cdf32.jpg The harmonies are true to form and incredibly strong ala Beach Boys along with the help of brass driven melodies. It's a breath of fresh air to have such an authentic sounding band with a sound out of their time, it feels so natural to them as if they had come straight out of the 60s and in a market getting overly saturated in mediocre indie pop bands Dr.Dog remain as one of the best of the best kept secrets in the music scene toay, potentialy look at them threw the perspective of say 'Neutral Milk Hotel', 'Pixies' or 'Dinosaur JR' they aren't big yet but in a few years time this cult following will spread and develope into a heritage if they keep on releasing albums like this. :D :D  Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. Despite in interviews where Greg said countless times that unlike 'Night Ripper' the samples used would be much longer and less cut up this is simply not true, here the samples are just as indecisive (in a good way) as ever, they do all coheriently flow and make sense in fact you would be quite shocked about how many songs he can stuff into one track without it soundling like a cohlessal mess. Here you are looking at Kelly Clarksons 'Since You Been Gone' batteling it out with NIN's 'Wish' before busting out into a hip hop track. This is truely entertaining stuff it has to be said, it's just an album with impeciable flow & rhythem. http://www.coachella.com/files/Artists/125/girltalk.jpg The choice of music here is eclectic but more mainstream rather than the underground though he does have a habbit of mixing the underground with mainstream as well as the 70s and 80s with the 90s and 00s. In a sense of the word this is great as people will know the groove, rhythem and lyrics to the vast majority of this music. Here is a list of artists for you to get an idea: Aphex Twin Nirvana Jay Z Daft Punk, Red Hot Chili Peppers Avril Lavigene Radiohead Kanye West Salt -n- Peppa Beck, Beastie Boys 50 Cent Phil Collins, David Bowie The Game Outkast NIN Rhianna M.I.A Aerosmith Icecube Eminem Run DMC Michael Jackson MC HAMMER Weezer Soulja Boy Metallica Thin Lizzy Peter Bjorn & John... hell I could go on but the is a bunch more famous names in the mix, can you imagine all this music colliated within 2 or 3 tracks? Well this is what you get and never has the majority of this sounded any better. Sure some of the select samples could go on for a little longer but this is my new faviroute party CD, the is something here for everybody & even some of the more cringeworthy tracks make a very welcome apperance as without the splice of cheese this just wouldn't be a great party CD and thats exactly what this is... best mash up ever? But this was the year where a little ditty by the name of 'Rock & Roll Queen' broke onto the telebox in various 'Fashionable' ads and made sweaty 16 and 17 year olds with fake IDs dance around splashing cheap and nasty snakebite all over the shop. Needless to say the album wasn't by any means bad but it really failed to capture anything more then a couple of indie disco floor fillers, the aggresion on the album felt pretty fake & the lyrics seemed too angst ridden to really matter... sure they could belt out a hook but not to a strong enough extent to have a lack of other means that make music... well so enjoyable, they just couldn't quite carry off a song overly convincingly and whilst hooks were there they weren't particually clever and they did begin to wear tiresome. But now 2 years later the follow up arrives with... well a lot less hype then the debut, it's just 'The Subways' despite only not releasing an album for a mere 2 years suddenly feel very irrelevant.... like they were so 2006 & it's for this reasson that with their sophmore effort 'All Or Nothing' they have a lot more to prove. http://www.offtopic.forum/data/MetaMirrorCache/6d2c2b1c472c209d991bee6477b6266a.jpg So as this album sort of fell from grace and finnaly showed up people where intrigued but the hype hasn't been close to last time... and why is this... well first things first the is by no way in large the mega single here that 'Rock & Roll Queen' was. The music whilst still hooky doesn't have anything that stands out as immediatly as anything on the debut, this isn't a bad thing... the album at times feels a lot more aggresive and cohierantly written... the standard of writing has improved a lot this time round but then again with this and the feeling that these young scampers are still learning they jump into with this new found confidence and make some really poor accoustic/slower numbers and at times break into pop rock territory that is just too much for anyone that has a Y chromosone and is over 18 years old. But going back to my original point this album doesn't scream a hit like the predoccesor and nor will it be considerd a sleeper hit that is overlooked, truth be told this is all functional music with moments of promise and glimpses of growth from these teens but your left wondering that is the only reasson they still have audience based on the back of their music or the fact that teenage boys who read NME can't stop masturbating over Charlotte? Guys want to be with her, girls want to be her... but as for the music the isn't anything that quite captures the immagination the same way. :D:D Alright Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. In fact now that I have heard more stuff since then I will say it's more like Modest Mouse being hit over the head collectivley by Animal Collective and Yeasayer with Pavement and Built To Spill making the odd swing for the jaw. So yeah this is an alternative record in that vein, it wholey approachable but has layers and depth with graspy yelly vocals and a sound which is very earthly and organic and approaches world music but doesn't sacrafise hooks for art wankery. I earlier reviewed and was very impressed by this albums sister EP and subsiquently began to loook forward to this release, the 4 tracks off of the EP which proceeded it are on this album... which yea is a bit of a catch 22, I love the EP but do I really want to pay for 4 of the songs again? Ahhh well. http://www.offtopic.forum/data/MetaMirrorCache/1a7fba725d37ad4e5dc74abb677fe9b4.jpg Anyways, this album is most deffinatly not 1 dimensional, the is plenty of variety here interchanging from the predomanant influences so one track will sound very Animal Collective with a hint of Modest Mouse then the next track will sound very Modest Mouse with a hint of Animal Collective, which may sound rubbish the is enough of their own twist on things to make it sound their own and make it sound like a coheriant album & most importantly their album. 'Me, Me, Just Me' for example is incredibly uptempo and dancey bouncey but it's then followed by 'Baby Joesph Starling' which sounds more incredibly to the vein of Sunset Rubdown with it's piano led tempo but the hook suprisingly makes it their own with ooooo oooo ooo's over the back of some very graspy yelping and yelling... then you hear the last couple of seconds with the spacey guitar and vocal delivery of 'yea yea yea' making you think Modest Mouse had entered the building and finnished the song off for them. I don't partically like to compare bands all the way threw out reviews but this is one of the most bizzarley imprssive immitation band ever... if this was any other band I'm pretty sure I would tell them to get some bloody ideas of your own and stop copying the greats but this band has done it so effortlessly and well that I can't help but enjoy the album on it's own merits. I reccomend this to fans of early AC, Yeasayer and Moon & Antarctica period Modest Mouse as it's all hear, the only fear for you guys is it may be a bit too familiar but for me they have done just enough to make this a great album, but it's certainly no classic. :D:D:D Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. I have been keeping a keen eye out for this album for sometime and it had finnaly surfaced and I have been giving it quite the overhall as far as listens are concerned. Due out on Becks birthday in the US on July 8th with earlier releases in europe (4th Germany/Spain) (7th EU & UK) it took it's sweet time by only leaking a week before release. 'The Information' was quite a departure for Beck by being his most electronic album by a long shot... and it was very good and an improvment on 'Guereo' which was just too safe. Here we see Beck refraining to more 'Midnight Vulture' type ground... I dunno it's Beck predicting his next move is quite hard. What I think this album is, is Beck back on TRUE form as in this album shows Beck for what Beck should be, understated genre boundry pushing works which don't neccisarily leap out on first listen but grow on you... when I first heard this album I was quite dissapointed and underwhelmed but the was something to grab onto (much like Mellow Gold and Oddelay) and then these songs really started to reveal themselves after the 3rd or 4th listen, this is what Beck is all about. http://www.offtopic.forum/data/MetaMirrorCache/e262cfaa46940c2dbca0895710270011.jpg Vocally this album is one of his best ventures yet with his voice sounding more confident then usual, the use of samples is quite nice, the cat power featured 'Walls' is quite wonderful in the use of samples. It's quite a loopy album, the hook in the majority of the songs is the fact the structure of the music is so looped as in it doesnt progress too much or change but the shifty feeling creates a really bouncey feeling which is grand, especially when it's done as well as it's done here... you will more then happely shuffle or nod towards this. It's quite a surreal album the is a lot going on here & it's hard to describe it without doing it justice the are moments of sheer rambastic guitar driven fun and moments of hypnotic shoegazing to the melodic down tempo tracks with drums going several beats per minute over the key melody but it works & damn it works well, this is Becks best album since 'Sea Change' without a shadow of a doubt... it's just a shame the album is sooo bloody short! :D:D:D:yes: Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. A Weekend In The City was okay, certainly listenable but was quite hollow and now we have had flux a horrible disco tune and now we have Mecury which sounds, once again like a pre renderd remix with programmed vocals and stupid horns thrown in, the lyrics are Pretentious drivel where he talks a lot but says nothing, it's a headache undoubtably i'm sure they are trying something different but it's just not working for them, it's a car crash and a sound of a band trying to find a sound but having no idea how the hell to pull it off, the one redeeming feature on this dire track is the drumming break near the end. First thing that seems to spring to mind is that this music is pretty.... pretty. Yeap its pretty it's good to listen to and has a sense of fun to it which I just find charming, it's got the charm and front, so it must be a solid album and that's exactly what it is, solid.... the isn't anything else to it which is a frustrating shame! This is one of those albums that has tracks that all sound great on their lonesome with the strings layerd over simple melodies and prodominate drumming with the odd trumpet thrown in and posetivley nice vocals.... but.... yea one after another it just sort of flys straight over my head, the 3rd track stands out because of the very upfront Trumpet but what it mainly boils down to is accoustic guitar strumming and strings with the same vocal format over and over, occasionaly it will slow down a bit but often it remains a very similar tempo. http://www.thisisfakediy.co.uk/upload/noahandthewhale300.jpg It's refreshing for a british band to sound so American in a country so stagnant with Indie RAWK but the is nothing new here, nothing done which has been done better & whilst these are little pop gems on their own, as an album it just doesn't catch on... it doesn't do it, interest quickly begins to fade and this is a shame because given that they only had a couple of these songs alongside some more subtle ones this album could of been a great balance of slow burners and pop hits but this, like a greatest hits collection, has no impact because all of the songs are DYING to get your attention and when that happens you often forget the lot. Good try, not bad, worth a look but ultimatly it's very disposable... but at the same time it's a nice addition to the libary for when your iPod/iTunes is on shuffle. :D:D Five Years Time http://youtube.com/watch?v=jRX5kH6IrkY Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. Their music is folky melodic masterpieces with rock n roll swagger and sensebilities, the dynamic mix of these 2 elements allow for a lot of wiggle room for the band to explore and vary things up with out straying to far from their core sound... this allows for punchy memorable albums which never alienate, all too often a band could have 4 STAND OUT tracks but loose focus and the cohierance and uneasy nature of the album make it a bit of a chore to sit threw as it desperatly tries to set a mood one minute then ebruptly shatters it all by going a totally different direction... much like a schitzophrenic friend, good fun one minute... needlessly aggresive the next... well what i'm getting at can be great but frustratingly swings off course. The other fear for a band is to stay too strongly to a formular where songs whilst sounding great on a shuffle would just wash right over you when played one after another (see Noah & The Whale). Silver Jews have never ever been guilty of this and again they are not, this music is beautiful and vaired... it's never needlessly straying from the formular and never has the uneccisary CRY FOR ATTENTION 3 or 4 tracks in... this is all solid and at time beautiful stuff & you will remember it all.. not just select moments. http://www.offtopic.forum/data/MetaMirrorCache/1b4fb175a8ba1ec3889cd6500fdb5fe2.jpg Few steps away from attaining legendry status, especially in the folk scene it's nice to see a band of such stature and experiance not drop the ball the vocal interplay between male and female a like whilst common in this genre of music is done as if to set an example... simple not flashy but not too modest either, shes got nice vocals he's got nice story telling vocals they don't want to try and match each other or upstage each other they just go in their stride... and this is where the album ultimatley proves it's self and is why it's such a great album, it all sounds very honest. The often very down lyrics are deliverd with an eary sense of honesty, all the notes seem to come natural and it's got the sound of a band that know where they are going... they know who they are but don't know what about their sound is so good... & as a result they create the sound with out ever trying to beat it & as a result this is probably the best folk rock album of the year... the use of spacey tense electric guitars underneath the very much folky undertone combined with some really interesting layers allow this album to be both punchy and allows it to have a very long shelf life. :D:D:D:) Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it. Stenners Posted July 16, 2008 Author Posted July 16, 2008 http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51MvFbwacIL._SL500_AA240_.jpg Nas Untitled Gangsta/Hip Hop/Rap Considerd rather rightfully as one of the leading icons in the hip hop scene, turning out a consistent run of critcially acclaimed albums... Nas whenever he announces an album the is always a great deal of excitment from it... something most hip hop artists can't command. The controversy surrounding this album is pretty shit so I ain't even going to discuss something like that especially considering the actual end product is even lamer then the controversy that surrounded it. Who remembers the Nas cross over album 'Nostradamus'.... no? Well thats because it sucked but it wasn't for one second denying it was more then a cross over album... here we have Nas trying rather foolishly tackle mainly race relation and rapping about how singers cant sing whats from their heart anymore, o how ironic as this whole album comes off as flat and souless. Association and Testify both come off as some preachy self rightious effort to teach morales and religious ethics in a very preachy way to the point it feels quite patronising and even to a degree insulting. http://tekone.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/nas.jpg What is even worse for this is that Nas seems fully serious on this concept hes got going on in this album to the point he sound dellousional, the music here is patheticly weak, the messages are either patronising, cliched or just vauge.... the beats on here are soooooo wishy washy going from fantastically poor Gangsta to wishy washy pretentious self indulgant pap. I really like Nas and 'Hip Hop Is Dead' was a good album but do go from such a staggeringly consistent run of output to dirge like this is not just perplexing but it makes you wonder if Nas even wrote the thing in the first place, avoid at all costs. For people that love experimental progressive noise however this is a great opputunity for fans to experiance the 'other' side of sonic youth with toones of changes in signature, horns and fuzz. This album is just one massive jam session lasting at over 57minutes and was entirley done live as a jam in 2005 & I must say this jam is nothing short of stunning, the horns are well implemented, the switches all seem to work and whilst it is essentially one long durge of noise and distortion the short bursts of vocals and interesting ways the direction changes keeps this track both interesting and fasinating. http://www.offtopic.forum/data/MetaMirrorCache/f44b76b44c5f0941d67ed6fd47840353.jpg So for people to look at this as an album of music it will be a bit wrong, it isn't even album at all it's a 58minute jam and its good stuff. People who thing Sonic Youth is just noise as it is deffinatly won't appriciate this with open arms at all. But people who like things on the immersive atmospheric side especially for the fantastic section that kicks off at about 38minutes in should check this out it creates a new world & the fact this is all done live in front of a crowd in one take makes it all the more impressive and further shows off more to the point why Sonic Youth are one of the best bands ever to have existed. :D:D:D Quote Delete my account, the is no reason why it should be against standard procediure, do it do it do it.
