I don't think the American public will vote for either a > woman or a Black man, regardless of any other qualifications. As I > said, I hope I'm wrong. I don't know. I think a lot of it depends on how hyped up the young voters get and whether the Democrats can actually learn to get Democratic voters to the polls (all the yapping about Nader being a "spoiler" in 2000 missed the fact that around half of the eligible Democrats didn't even bother to vote). Also, it doesn't take the entire nation to be "ready" for anything given our system. Both 2000 and 2004 would have turned out different if a single mid-Western state had flipped. I forget who it is now but some guy has book out about election strategy and his advice to the Democrats is to blow off the South entirely. They're not going to take the South. Period. They should concentrate on holding the coasts (which should be a walk this time round) and gaining in the mid-West. Finally, I'm curious where the idea came from that the left has to be "nice" all the time. Doesn't anybody remember things like beginnings of unions? Population of China at the time of Mao's death. Around 650,000,000 Fact 3. Population was more or less constant for the fifty prior years and the birth rate did not change until the near the end of Mao's tenure when it dropped significantly. Fact 4. Life expectancy of the average Chinese prior to the Maoists. Thirty five years. Fact 5. Life expectancy of the average Chinese at Mao's death. Seventy years. Fact 6. Literacy at the start of the Maoist era Twenty percent. Fact 7. Literacy at the end of the Maoist era Ninety three percent. Your site attributes seventy million excess deaths to the Mao regime then the previous regime must have had a hell of a lot worse excess deaths to explain the figues above. Why are those deaths not listed. Your site has no credibility - even note the hasty addition of twenty million attributed to colonialism to attempt to stave of complete embarrasment . Mao was a ruthless demagogue who crushed opponents with no remorse but it may be that was the only way that China could progress given their starting situation. Over the same period they certainly did better than democratic India. Oh come now Gunner, take a look at what Mao had to work with. A Hundred of million Chinese was a drop in the bucket. Mao killed almost as many Chinese as the USSR had people at the end of the Great Patriotic War. But Maoism does have a certain something. Must be those little red books and the Green Jackets. I mean, all Stalin had was the mustache, but Mao got an entire fashion line named for him. -- pyotr filipivich "Given our monstrous, overgrown government structure, any three letters chosen at random would probably designate an agency or part of a department that could be profitably abolished." Hence the > draconian population control measures currently in practice today in > China. The point I was making that whatever butchery or idiotic collective farming botchups Mao's regime made, somehow the average Chinese ended up better off than they were under the previous regime. The Kuomintang of course did much better in Taiwan but they received massive aid in the early years. If they had defeated the Maoists such aid would not have been forthcoming and wouldn't have been plausible for China anyway. > > The population of Europe grew during WW2, along with the average life > span...but some 50+ million died in 6 yrs > > Germany..in the sector once known as West Germany had a 1939 population > of 43 million.
