Oh? Where do you have a for-profit government? In your pocket maybe?

I got mine from the "National Priorities Project." They cite Congress as

the source of their figures. Like most things, the actual cost of the war

is hard to determine, as so many factors are involved. They calculated

the cost of the war above and beyond what it would cost to maintain the

military if we were not at war. This includes things like combat pay, but

does not include normal maintenance, nor does it include increased cost of

VA benefits for injured vets.

Ghod you're dumb. Here's your "just one:" http://www.zazzle.com/fmayhar

And then there are the industries built around building the mirrors and

electronics, such as at http://www.e-scopes.cc/ (the very first Google hit

for "telescope mirrors," by the way). The CCD in your digital camera? Part

of the development was spun off from research on CCDs used in astronomy,

which used them long before they were available to consumers.

There are a _lot_ more but I'm not going to waste my time proving it to you

since you're obviously just an idiot.

Public funding: The NSF (http://www.nsf.gov/), for example. Private

funding: Sigma Xi (http://www.sigmaxi.org/programs/giar/index.shtml), the

American Astronomical Society (http://www.aas.org/grants/chretien.html), the

John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation (http://www.macfound.org/), as

just three examples of many.

You owe me an apology. Not that I'm expecting one from someone like you.

Er, they're getting it. Just not in dollars. Reread what I wrote about

them producing knowledge. Better yet, get someone to explain it to you,

because you obviously have reading comprehension problems.

> Answer: Because you lied and they can't.

Fuck you, you ignorant little prick.

>> Oh, and what they _produce_ is knowledge. Lots of it.

Well, in my particular case, exactly ten percent of each sale through

Zazzle. But there are lots of people who make their entire livings from it,

dickhead.

And in the 70s and 80s there were people exactly like you complaining that

there was no commercial return on the money spent for those programs.

Ignorant fucks just like you and ignorant in exactly the same way.

Well, except for almost everything we've learning about Mars in the last

twenty years. But that doesn't matter to you, since your mind is already

made up.

I snipped the rest of your inane rantings because they're not worth the time

it would take to respond to them. Fortunately for the human race, you're

not in charge. Kindly take your ignorant droolings, fuck off, and die.

It depends upon what your life style is. For example, if one wishes to remain

physically active well into old age then a country with a good history of

public stonings might be more suitable.

Yeah, I mean does it really matter whether the earth is 6 thousand or 4 billion

years old? It's probably not going to make much of a difference to you?

I also wonder how much of NASA's budget goes towards classified government

projects? How often have we heard the term "classified payload" at a launch?

They ripped off the Mayan and other Indians for a huge amount of gold

In those cases all NASA pays for is the actual launch. Whatever agency

is sending up the payload (NRO, DOD, etc) pays for the satellite and

booster.

You FAILED to document a commercial spin-off and offered pictures, then you

FAILED to document a spin-off but pretended NASA invented CCD for itself

when commercial interestd invented CCD, then you FAILED to meaningfully

document the private funding.

It seems to me that you owe THE WHOLE COUNTRY an apology for supporting

It matters, but dealing with nuclear waste matters more.

Energy efficiency matters more.

Pollution matters more.

Curing diseases matters more.

Feel-good science at the expense of taxpayers for whom real problems go

unsolved should be banned or at least not publically funded.

You hide behind a GMail account because you're a foreigner who likes to bash

America while pretending to be an American.

Thirsty aliens needing suntan lotion. Some asshole Democrat will probably

want to make them all US citizens the moment we find them.

If we're lucky a Republican Congress will be back in session and we'll put

the Martians to work making something out of plastic.

There is no such thing.

Pure research may not show immediate use but simply cannot predict what

will and will not produce in time.

The laser was a pure research project. It was, at the time, referred to as

a "solution in search of a problem." Nobody knew what to do with it.

You probably would have had an absolute tantrum over the waste of money,

time, and effort on such a useless project...

Actually, to this 'Patriot Games' moron, knowledge IS useless.

It isn't useless to non-morons, though.

Oh, go fuck yourself sideways with a rusty saw, you brain-damaged illiterate

piece of ignorant filth. Corresponding with you is of less use than trying to

reason with a rabid religious fundamentalist and for identical reasons.

For those who think the US is wasting money on space research, ask

yourself this - who would you rather have a base on the moon - China

or the West? (Or bases in the asteroid belt, for that matter). Which

country is closer to achieving that reality?

Does anyone here even know what is going on with the Chinese space

program?
