jokersarewild Posted August 23, 2005 Posted August 23, 2005 We talked about this today in my American Government class... http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/08/22/AR2005082201255.html This does bring up the question though: Is free speech absolute? Quote RoyalOrleans is my real dad!
Mohammed_Rots_In_Hell Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 I agree whole-heartedly with Graham on this one (big surprise, huh)... I don't think that this case really applies because the radio staion is not owned by the government. I know that companies under federal law can descriminate in hiring and firing as long as they don't descriminate based on "race, religion, sex, national origin, etc, etc." so the company that owns this radio station can legally fire him because he eats wheat toast instead of bran if they want to. I do know that the supreame court has found that free speech stops when the speech itself becomes violent or deadly. For instance screamin "FIRE" in a crowded theatre. I don't know if I agree with the decision, but that is how the courrts interpret free speech. Another case in virginia where some klansmen were burning a cross in a black family's yard and were convicted of some anti-cross burning law which was not struck down as a violation of free speech because the speech itself was intimidating. Quote The first amendment provides our constitution with its voice. The second amendment provides its teeth.
phreakwars Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 NO, the people who believe in it, will, from time to time, want SOMEONE ELSES free speech censored, but totally throw a bitch fit if it's there OWN free speech being held back. . . Quote https://www.facebook.com/phreakwars
jokersarewild Posted August 24, 2005 Author Posted August 24, 2005 We actually discussed pretty much what you just said here. I don't think he should have been fired. IT'S A RADIO TALK SHOW FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!!! But I believe that the constitution says, and correct me if I'm wrong, that no law can be made that inhibits free speech, or something to that effect. I think that if you are offended by free speech and other's opinions, you should go live in CHINA, where there are none... Quote RoyalOrleans is my real dad!

We refer to them as hypocrites who take up the name "Terrorist-Hater". Go figure. Quote RoyalOrleans is my real dad!
Lethalfind Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 We have the right to free speech as long as that speech does not insight or invite violence. Such was the case with Charles Manson, he was convicted of murder even though he did not attack anyone, his speech insighted the people to commit the crimes... This comes up often with hate groups, Nazi youths, the KKK. They can not insight others to commit crimes and then hide behind the constitution. Quote I am a pathetic piece of shit leeching single mom.
Komrade Vostok Hazard Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 If it isn't absolute, then technically there is no free speech. Free speech is free speech. There are NO varying degrees of it. It is a simple black and white, one or the other concept. Quote All bullshit, No Business.
ParasiteGod Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 Right. I think we're far from having absolute free speech. They just made it up so we'd have something to cling to, I think. Quote I want to report a double murder. If you go one mile east on Columbus Parkway to the public park, you will find kids in a brown car. They were shot with a 9mm Luger. I also killed those kids last year. Good bye Brooks, I like you. Now get out of here. Go home.
hugo Posted August 24, 2005 Posted August 24, 2005 McCain/Feingold dealt the 1st a significant blow. Biggest attack on the 1st since the Alien and Sedition acts under John Adams. The article you refer to has nothing to do with the 1st Amendment. I have the legal right to tell my wife she looks fat in that dress. I will suffer consequences if I utilize this right. Quote The power to do good is also the power to do harm. - Milton Friedman "I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents." - James Madison
jokersarewild Posted August 24, 2005 Author Posted August 24, 2005 Actually, hugo, it does. He got fired because some Islamic people were offended by something he says. But it is supposedly a free country, and you should be able to say whatever you want. But that is not the case here. And if your wife slaps you, you know that in your house, free speech is not absolute, because you get punished for it. Quote RoyalOrleans is my real dad!

The Bill of Rights basically ends at the workplace doors. In the absence of a contract you can be fired because your nose is too big. Some laws provide protection for certain classes but these laws are not embedded in the Constitution. 1 Quote The power to do good is also the power to do harm. - Milton Friedman "I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents." - James Madison
jokersarewild Posted August 24, 2005 Author Posted August 24, 2005 Well stated, hugo. I guess...I was wrong. Quote RoyalOrleans is my real dad!
fullauto Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 Free Speech is dead... Dass ist Tot! DEAD! My home state recently turned away the tattered remnants of the Black Panther Party when they wanted to have a speech rally... I personally hate the mother fuckers, and wouldn't really mind if someone came in a large van and beat them with pool cues, but I would NEVER stop them from speaking publicly! They, and all the other fringe groups (to include Islam) have the right to speak! EVERYONE.... Niggers, La Raza, Nazi's, World Jewish Council, the Pope.... EVERYONE! just don't get pissed when you are booed/punched.... The last remnants of free speech is the internet! and we need to make sure this shit doesn't get sensored... Here, you can say anything you want or feel and there is not shit anyone can say about it! Let's keep it that way! watch... I'll show ya... Nigger, spic, Jew, fag, kike, pollok, ginny, cracker, half-breed, camel-jockey, chink! See that... no cops... None... wait..... I got to go, there's a forceful knock on the door! <bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do!> Quote Liberals... Saving the world one semester at a time "I'm not a racist... I'm a realist! And if you don't know the difference, You're an Idiot!" -- Fullauto Present - 1. (Noun) The point that divides disappointment from hope
sovikolp Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 People take too much advantage of free speech. it's not there for you to abuse. It's there to make a valid statement. it's never, "it's free country and I should be able to say whatever you want." Because, it's a free country and I could beat you into a hospital for mouthing off. And sometimes, cops think you deserve to get your ass beat and you get away free. Quote
jokersarewild Posted August 25, 2005 Author Posted August 25, 2005 Question: How exactly do you abuse free speech? Quote RoyalOrleans is my real dad!
DizzyME Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 People are so fucking afraid of offending anyone these days it's sickening. Sure, it wasn't a nice thing to say. Sure, it pissed off a few people. BIG FUCKING DEAL. Let the man speak. 1 Quote

If they were worried about loosing endorsements all they had to do was find some screaming jihadist to counterbalance the truth, and all would be happy... I should be a media mogul!
