Mohammed_Rots_In_Hell Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 I would like to get some oppinions on this... My son was in school the other day and got into verbal spat with one of his classmates. This (white) kid called my son a "spic". They expelled the kid for making the remark. My questions are: 1) Should children be allowed to used racial slurs in school? 2) If not, is expolsion appropriate? 3) Do you think the same punishment would have been equal if the kid were not white? 4) Do you think the same punishment would have been equal if my son were not hispanic? I tried to use the situation to teach my son to have thicker skin than that, and that the word "spic" is just that ... a word. And he should be proud of who he is and not worry about it. I also started thinking that perhaps racial slurs are inappropiate in school and should be discouraged, but expolsion was rather extream. A forced appology, or something would have more closely fit the crime. However, I have to admit that my blood was boiling when he told me the story and wanted to lay a tire-iron up next to this kid's father's head, but then I realized that yeah sure this kid probably over heard his daddy using the term "spic" in some derogatory manner, but even though I disagree with it, it is his right to speak however he wants. After all, I'm a champion of free speech (probably why I love this site so much). So even if I disagree with this racsist fuck, I will defend to the death his right to be a racsist fuck. tizz Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 Kids should be disgouraged from making the remarks at all and it should be explained to them that regardless of what their family is willing to allow, it is inaproproate in the school setting. As well, a parent teacher confrence should be held to make sure the parents also understnad that such remarks are not tolerated on school grounds or at school functions. The school is not responsible entirely for the moral upbringing of the child, but they are responsible for creating an envirnment of equal learning and oprotunity. (expulsion is a BIT MUch considering the blame lies onteh shoulders of the parents here) Quote "An intelligence that is not humane is the most dangerous thing in the world" Ashley Montague "No one should have to walk alone" Phuong Du "An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" Ghandi "If I were asked to define an American in a single phrase, I would say 'An American is a person who has the right to be different' and I think that right is growing" William Manchester
hugo Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 How old is your son? My experience is 12-14 year olds are about the most verbally racist people on the planet. Even if he is younger, I would not automatically blame the kid's father. I think an apology and a three day suspension would be plenty. Mohammed_Rots_In_Hell Posted August 26, 2005 Author Posted August 26, 2005 He is 9... and maybe I used the term "Expolsion" incorrectly, it was just a one day "suspension", but I still think that is a bit excessive. I was wondering what they'd do if the kid simply said "You're Ugly" or "You're Stupid"? Whatever they'd do for that they should do the same for the racsist comments, I would think. fullauto Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 I would say that rascist peak should be discouraged, but I would require teachers to make the offending party feel stupid for using it in class in front of all his peers... It's sort of a condensed version of what happens in society... EG White Kid: You're a ******! Teacher: No... You're the ******! You see, the term ****** means 'ignorant', and since you used the word without actually knowing the term first, You are ignorant, and thus the TRUE ****** in this classroom! And because you are so ignorant, you have a 5 page paper due in one week on the history of the word ******, and you had better turn it in, or you will fail this class! This way you get to keep the kid in school (where they need to be) and you get to make an example of him to any other would-be rascist remark makers in the class... I can almost assure you that the other kids will not make the same mistake.... Quote Liberals... Saving the world one semester at a time "I'm not a racist... I'm a realist! And if you don't know the difference, You're an Idiot!" -- Fullauto Present - 1. (Noun) The point that divides disappointment from hope
cynthiaa89 Posted August 26, 2005 Posted August 26, 2005 It's because they have close-minded parents. The kids are raised to act like morons and that's what they do. I see this stuff everyday and I'm a Senior in High School. The ones that do it never grow out of it and continue to be racist fucks throughout their lives. This type of harassment should be discouraged at school, but most of the teachers are so busy not paying attention to the kids they never see it. When someone tells on someone for acting this way the teacher tells them to get over it or don't worry about it. In my opinion, someone should get in just as much trouble for making racial slurs as they do for cussing someone out or fighting. Then, the kids parents should get their asses kicked for raising such a disrespectful little prick. Quote "Life's tough, but it's tougher when you're stupid."
