Outlaw2747 Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 Not really something that would piss you off (unless you live near the critters) but what creatures do you peeps believe is downright scary or dangerous? Do any of y'all live near these things or encountered any of them? I am sure Builder would probably like this one. Australia is FULL of dangerous critters. I'd fear the Sydney funnelweb spider, the Inland Taipan, and the Sea Wasp. GF, have at it!!! . builder Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 I've been chomped on by a mouse spider, which won't kill you, but hurts like the bejeesus. . I belted that fucker with a rubber thong several times, and he bounced up and kept running. They're called mouse spiders because they hunt live prey, including cane toads, which produces one mean, mixed-up, hallucinating mofo of a spider. They can jump about half a metre, and they latch on with those massive chompers. Funnel-webs are quite tame in comparison. We used to trap them in jars, and drop a scorpion in for entertainment. Quote Persevere, it pisses people off.
Outlaw2747 Posted September 16, 2005 Author Posted September 16, 2005 Oh I remember reading about those things. One pretty nasty sight. And at least they are taking care of those cane toads which I hear are quite the nuisance (and also the most poisonous toad). As for that funnelweb, I thought those male funnelwebs were very aggressive when they are on a female hunt? I also read from several sources they are one of the most venomous spiders as the protein in their venom is highly dangerous to primates. BTW, ever encounter the inland taipan and sea wasp? builder Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 The inland taipan, or fierce snake lives in remote desert country. Not seen one, but they are reported as being the quickest snake over a long distance. The brown snake is more common, and capable of outrunning most kids. Rather deadly poison also. Funnel-webs kill more people around the greater Sydney metro region, because they are found in many back yards of residential housing. They are most dangerous when infected with herbicides and other chemicals, injested from the insects they eat. The common huntsman spider is usually quite harmless, but after eating cockroaches sprayed with chlordane, they are super-agressive, capable of jumping a metre, and attacking anything they can grab. . As for the sea wasps, they are common at certain times of the year. Many beaches in our north have bottles of vinegar posted at beach entry points. The vinegar neautralises the venom. I was tunu fishing, and my line picked up a tentacle of a sea wasp. As the fishing line travelled onto the reel, a small section flipped onto my forearm. The pain is immediately intense, and the heart rate hits the roof. Most victims of sea wasps die from shock or heart attacks long before the venom kills them. Quote Persevere, it pisses people off.

Yea, I hear that there aren't many deaths due to the inland taipan because it prefers places that are not heavily populated. But I hear that king brown snake is fast, and I'll definitely take your word on that. Both belong to the Elapid (fixed-fanged) family of snakes which also include the cobra and are known for their neurotoxins. Why are the funnelwebs more dangerous due to the chemicals? Is it because the chemicals are stored in their bodies that make them more venomous or does it make them more aggressive? And I'll look up that huntsman...I hear they are related to wandering spiders, which are almost as deadly as the funnelweb. As for the sea wasp. That is one frightening jelly. I hear it actually has eyes where it can actually interpret light and motion. And the fact that it can really kill someone in a matter of minutes. Our sea nettles and lion's manes have nothing on them. I am sure people on here have their stories on the brown recluses, black widows, wasps, and jellies. I have quite a few I'll share a lil later. builder Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 I'm guessing that the spiders are hallucinating from ingesting toxins etc. Huntsmen are usually so tame that they can be handled. A mate does a party trick where he pops a huntsman in his mouth, and lets it crawl back out again. When my house at Moreton Island was fumigated with chlordane (now a banned organochloride) the usually timid huntsmen were leaping at anything that moved. You could clearly see drops of venom on their fangs. Most unusual. I was fixing my brakes on the cruiser one day, and dropped a split pin. It fell into a cinder block and I was feeling around inside the hole for the split pin. Something furry there. Had a look, and it was one big mother huntsmen sitting over her egg case. This one is the male. . Quote Persevere, it pisses people off.

That kinda looks like this one species of spider that I seen in Korea. It was kinda big and it did resemble a huntsman but it was quite aggressive as it did many threat displays towards me. Korea is like spider city. Even the violin spider can be found there. One potentially dangerous animal I encountered was a cicada killer wasp. They are solitary wasps in which the female grows to more than an inch in length...bigger than some queen wasps of the social variety. And they paralyze cicadas and bring them underground to lay eggs in them for their offspring. In any case me and my friend were walking home and I seen a hole in the ground. I am wondering what animal would build it...it would have been an ant hole but most ants create hills. This was just a dime sized hole. Or it could have been an old spider burrow. As we crept close, this mammoth of a wasp crawled out and quickly buzzed by us and disappeared. Very creepy for I have never seen such a huge hymenopteran. . Vortex Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 Spiders creep me the hell out. Snakes dont even really scare me much, but a tiny spider just creeps me the hell out coincidently that blasted movie Aracnaphobia still got to me...and it wasnt even that great of a movie... well when i was young (around 15) i almost set my hand down outside of my house on a wolf spider. It has to be the biggest spider (outside of captivity) i ever ran into. Looking for pictures of it and seeing all those spiders on the google image search has made my stomach churn http://bestdamngeneralforum.com/data/MetaMirrorCache/fc203b9743aecffcb782858275f0dd0e.jpg (incase it doesnt show) apparently they are not dangerous to humans....but id still probably feint if one ever got on me....that or run screeming like a little girl (....kinda like a saturday night at a strip club ) Quote -I don't know about you...but I am SICK and tired of being nice and understanding!!! -The Liver is evil and must be punished! -The Early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. Outlaw2747 Posted September 16, 2005 Author Posted September 16, 2005 It kinda looks like the spider I encountered in Korea. But there are so many species there it is hard to tell, plus I didn't get too close to it as it was making threat displays at me and it was hanging from a doorway. Very big however. Outlaw2747 Posted September 17, 2005 Author Posted September 17, 2005 I never been to Iraq KVH but those creatures you are looking at are Solfugids AKA Camel Spider AKA Sun Spider. They are actually not true spiders as they lack spinneretts and venom. There are TONS of urban legends surrounding them but they are large carnivorous arachnids that run fast as hell They also give the impression of chasing someone for they LOVE shadows and shade. These creatures tend to take on spiders, scorpions, centipedes, rodents, and lizards. But I surely would not want to meet one in my tent should I go...lol! Maybe someone here who has been from Iraq could tell you more about them. I only know of them from research. Blue bottle is another name for the Portuguese Man of War, which is not a true jellyfish but a colonial polyp that essentially form a cohesive unit to make one animal. Sea Wasp is in a whole 'nother league. Quote "I wish I was in Tijuana, eating barbecued iguana." - Wall of Voodoo http://www.sucksbbs.net/data/MetaMirrorCache/fb910e0baa5b4e108ffee98f66cdb3cc.gif

Social wasps are way more dangerous for obvious reasons. But I hear those velvet ants are pretty damn nasty and have one of the most painful stings ever. tizz Posted September 17, 2005 Posted September 17, 2005 Hey vortex you'll like this. (the beginning of a lifetime total and utter fear of spiders) I decided one summer to do my mom a favor and totally clean out our garage. We had old doors on teh ground to make a floor. I decided that if I was gonna clean it better do it right. So I picked up one end of one of the doors to drag onto the yard when EEEP! are you ready........ About 500 wolf spiders came running out, over my feet and onto the lawn. OMG I damn near jumpt the 15 feet to the picnic table and started screaming bloody murder. I was about 11 at the time and just about every mother on teh block came running to the yard thinking I was being attacked. They very quickly saw what I was screaming my bloody head off about and joined me atop the table and joined into the most blood curdling chorus of screams ever to hit my little neighborhood. FINALLY one of the dads came out to investigate the horror and saved us all from a yard full of big nasty ugle scary viscious wolf spiders. He ran around like a mad man stomping on them. I think it was about 4 months before we could talk everyone into coming over for a BBQ. I still have nightmares about that day and will run faster that the Flash everytime I come across one of these evil buggers. Outlaw2747 Posted September 17, 2005 Author Posted September 17, 2005 Yea me too. The Portuguese Man of War (as we usually know it) is probably more dangerous in the Atlantic as it is more numerous I believe.
