By three years old biting should NOT be a problem and if it is you have to look at a childs comunication skills and emotional outlets. Biting is normal for YOUNGER children but by three it indicates something deeper.

I used to bite people up untill i was about 8, i can tell you, i did it because everybody picked on me, instead of punching i bit, that was the underlying cause there, now i just punch, and kick. I reserve biting for certain puposes that children have no idea about.(hopefully)

Well in a childcare facility part of the ciriculum is supposed to be empowering children to use proper comunication. If you were biting at 8 years old you obviously had issues with comunication. Children that get the attention they need from adults and are taught to use their voice over thier bodies when comunicating don't usually lash out like that. You also have to let kids fell validated when it comes to their emotions. Biting can often be a precurser to deeper socialisation problems and is also listed in tha autism and aspbergers syndrome checklists (things that is addresses early can be overcome enough to be mainstreamed). But regardless of all of this, that child CANNOT be allowed to endanger the rest of teh facility. (the only option is for teh parents to apply for or pay themselves for an aide that will work closely with a child and also prevent them from lashing out on other kids)

I bite in self defense when that is the only weapon I have available. Use the weapons nature has given you. I am twice as dangerous when sick... :D

Amen to that Outlaw. I do anything I need to survive. Moral of the story, if you are bigger than me, and fighting with me, watch your nuts, and exposed skin.

For legal reasons the day cares is not obligated to keep a child that has problems. They can refuse services to any child they deem a risk.

I know that when my granddaughter gets just a little runny nose with a little green snot they call us or my daughter to come and pick her up. They don

The better daycares actually have "sick rooms" where the children are sent to lie down and await pick up (it also allows teh facility to care for a child should a parent have an emergency and the child is ill) I know this is a popular thing in Colorado.

I wish we could do this!

The kid can be hacking his brains out, dripping snot everywhere, but if the child doesn't have a fever of 100.5 or higher we can't send em home. That and puking. But other than that, that is about it. And they wonder why in the wintertime we get awful epidemics! There is only so much that bleach can do!

Is that the descision of the owner? Don't you at least have a quarantine area for the pukers and fevers? We are required by the state to send home any child with a fever or throwing up and they cannot comback for 24 hours. Anything involving a virus or antibiotics requires a Doctor's note before we can even let them in the door.

No quarantine. It totally BITES MY ASS! They can run a fever of 100 all day long for ten hours, if it doesn't go up that .5, we can't send em' home. We have the 24 hour policy yet it doesn't apply to pink eye. Go figure.

We have a 48 hour on pink eye (plus the old owner was allergic to the virus and prone to becoming paralyzed from it EEEP) and ya there is the 100.5 rule (just to rule out teething and alergies) but puking or falling alseeep during playtime are "Home you go" along with pink eye or various out of character behaviours

see we have the pink eye cluse here. If the daycare deterimines that the child MIGHT have pink eye we can not bring the child back to them until we get a doctors note.

My granddaughter (Kandace) was thought to have it at one point but she did'nt. They still wanted a note first before she could come back.

I'm sure it verys from one daycare to another.

I have a child and have had to utilize day cares. I am appalled that this happened without someone noticing AND that the child who did it was allowed to stay at the day care, leaving the parent of the injured child no choice but too withdraw her own child. I understand that some children do bite however in the daycare setting some children have to be excluded for the safety of others. Should all the other children be punished for this one not being able to control itself??

When parents work and have to use a day care, what are they supposed to do when the daycare they pay a significant amount of their money to, can't keep their children safe.

Keep in mind in childcare, that you are not getting what YOU pay for, you are getting wht the workers GET paid (usually barely above minimum wage) Something definately has to be done about the situation

EXCELLENT Tizzy, Very well put!

I would venture to say that this most astute observation applies to other industries as well.

Bravo!

Just to let you know, at my last job I was in charge of the class, the only one first aid AND cpr certified and also in charge of activities and art for the summer and I got $6.50 an hour. One girl had been there for 6 years and made a whole $8.50. The poeple watching your kids are not exactly of the highest standard to accept the pay, mostly retirees and idiots (I took it only because I needed a little money and REFUSE to put my kid in anyone elses care at such a young age) The hardest part about leaving was knowing the hands I was leaving those kids in (and this was a decent facility)

Isn't it just criminal Tizz? It's amazingly criminal, to pay such important people, so very little. How the Hell do they expect to get stable employees who are go all out?

I don't know the regs here in NY, but in Vancouver, I'd tell you to start your own. I had my own small daycare in Van, and it was great. Fully in charge, got all the money, got to write off amazing things on taxes, ended up not paying taxes on a dime of it all after all was said and done.

House, yard, fenced, toys...space, little chairs...lunch time....oh the days!

It's actually really hard to get liscenced in NJ (not to mention expensive) I can't do it here because we have no home insurance (and the place is NOT kid safe) I would need to purchase one that was allready up to code and at 6.50 an hour I can't do that LOL PLus I would need to get my degree in early childhood education (more money)

That brings up another thread, the people who have the most important jobs, forming the minds of our children, people involved in their care and education, get paid the least.

Where are our priorites???

This is where "You get what you pay for" comes in. I mean, we all bitch about the education now days, but we don't pay the teachers worth a damn. And, to put up with some of the shit they have to put up with, they should be paid A WHOLE LOT more than they do now.
