RoyalOrleans Posted October 2, 2005 Posted October 2, 2005 Recently, an IKEA store opened up in Atlanta. I've been in the market for a new computer desk for a while, but I've been too stubborn to buy anything just yet. I found a desk that I liked and didn't look too cheap or clashy, with matching bookcases and other goodies, on their website. It's in stock and available at the Atlanta store. However... It's 42 miles from my home. Big deal, right? No, shitty deal. It's in the ghetto. Between 16th and 17th street in Atlanta, a white man just doesn't galantly walk down those corridors. Driving is another problem... a lot of traffic lights and stoop sitting apes staring at me and wondering what I am doing here between every stop. I'm not afraid, mind you. I've sneered at death in the face and flicked off militant Iraqis in a gunfight. What I do fear is what COULD happen. I'm damn sure some of these guys carry guns... illegally. I am a card carrying NRA bastard with a concealed weapons liscense. So nine times out of ten, I'm packing. I don't want to use it, but its there when I might need it. This doesn't make me immune to the law, above it, or anything to that effect. I just try to avoid situations where my gun is the only thing keeping fear from me. A gun shouldn't make anyone feel fearless, however these fucking porch-monkeys down on 16th and 17th street believe it does. Thus, I avoid this area at all costs. Why would a descent, reputable company open a store in the ghetto. The store just had its "Grand Opening", I guess it'll soon be its "Grand Closing". One might do a search down at the old courthouse for recent permits.... there just might be a "clean up the neighborhood" plan in the works. I've seen it in a few cities....one store goes in, another....city money gets plunked down for some sidewalk upgrades and some planters.... yesterday's ghetto becomes the new "Yale Town" (see Vancouver BC)..where anybody can get a $6.00 cuppa Joe. Mr. Trump and his mighty Tonkas might be moving in...... Then again, maybe those Scandinavian planners oughta get out their Ivory Tower whence planning the new stores.......... Well, I've seen it happen in similar places and I say the more the better. However, this will drive the innercity hoodrats out into the suburbs and countryside. tizz Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 They probably got a tax break and are part of an economic redevelopement plan. If it were jersey they would have used eminent domain to tear down houses for the ikea Quote "An intelligence that is not humane is the most dangerous thing in the world" Ashley Montague "No one should have to walk alone" Phuong Du "An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" Ghandi "If I were asked to define an American in a single phrase, I would say 'An American is a person who has the right to be different' and I think that right is growing" William Manchester
Cogito Ergo Sum Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 I'd listen to Skategreen... Ingvar Kamprad is NO fool. In fact, Ikea has NEVER closed any store they have opened. Ever. It is the largest privately held company in the world! If it were not for the many layers of Dutch Trusts that Ingvar Kamprad uses to hide his personal and family fortune, the truth would be out that he is indeed the worlds richest man! Compared to Kamprad, Bill Gates is a pauper. Plus Kamprad's wealth is COLD HARD CASH, not wishy washy Stock in Microsoft. IKEA hauls in over 15 BILLION dollars a year in sales and ALL of the profits after taxes are the personal property of Kamprad! Furthermore, IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad is personally a very frugal man, yet to his employees, he is unbelievably generous!!! I bet you did not know this... A few years ago, Ingvar Kamprad marked the 55th anniversary of the Swedish home furnishings superstore with a profit-sharing programme unprecedented in the retail industry. The company gave away its gross global sales for one day to its 40,400 worldwide co-workers, divided equally including every level from janitor to president, to thank them for contributing to the company's success over the years. DID YOU READ THAT? GROSS GLOBAL (WORLDWIDE) SALES FOR 1 DAY...NOT PROFIT, BUT SALES! 100% OF IT! GAVE IT AWAY TO THE WORKERS! As part of a thank you bonus, each co-worker received nearly $2,000 when the $80 million in gross sales for the day was divided among the company's workers. This is indicative of a corporate culture that tries to take care of the people who make up the company. IF there was an IKEA in my area, I'd work there in a heartbeat. It a good company! Almost 80,000 employees worldwide now! Quote . I put no stock in religion. By the word "religion" I have seen the lunacy of fanatics of every denomination be called the will of god. builder Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 But CES, globalisation in the corporate structure is killing off the small business structure. Do we all want the same fucking furniture? Quote Persevere, it pisses people off.
Cogito Ergo Sum Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 IKEA never claims to make furniture for everybody. They make good looking and innovative furniture, that you have to assemble youself, at very reasonable prices. I have a few pieces of theirs and I still love them. They are timeless pieces. As to the "small business structure"...those worthy of survival, will survive, the rest, will rightly be wiped away. I for one, like IKEA and Wal-Mart. Good companies, great prices, good service, excellent value. Quote . I put no stock in religion. tizz Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 I have NEVER had a good experience at IKEA. I have gone there looking for what was advertised, they never have it, the place makes me dizzy and it is too far away to go and have that experience (even if you call first you get there and NO PRODUCT) Quote "An intelligence that is not humane is the most dangerous thing in the world" Ashley Montague "No one should have to walk alone" Phuong Du "An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" Ghandi "If I were asked to define an American in a single phrase, I would say 'An American is a person who has the right to be different' and I think that right is growing" William Manchester
