Silver_dragon87 Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 As today I walked past the--to my eyes--lurid cross in the upstairs hallway at least a dozen times, I'd like to leave a brief (hopefully ) post about what pisses me off today. Simply put, I'm sick if being assaulted by the symbol of Christianity and, to tell the truth, all religion. Though as you already know I don't find that other religions flaunt themselves as shamelessly as the aforementioned Christians. Anyway, it's really starting to piss me off. It's fucking everywhere. And not just in the forms of crosses--on the walls, around the necks of sheep (forgive my insults if you wouldn't mind; this is a rant and I'm venting so I'm not as polite as I probably should be)--but also in the lyrics of the monotonous wailing of the country music these Albertans seem to enjoy. In the speeches of actors, in the hopes of boobs on the news, every, pardon the pun, goddamn place I look. Even just to cover the tiny subject of crosses--if it's so dear to you, so special, such a part of your life that you don't need any validation because you know you're on the right path, why the fuck do you have to rub it in everyone's face? Why are Christians so arrogant in themselves that they feel they must display their 'right path' wherever they go? Is there not something more intimate about tucking it UNDER your shirt, thereby keeping it closer to you blah blah blah? If you knew me, which you don't and won't, you might know that I wear the symbol of MY religion for all to see. I do this for a few reasons: to freak out the Christians here who think it's a symbol of 'witchcraft and Satan' and demons and other such nonsense, and as a big 'fuck you' to all said Christians. If they want to play the rub-it-in-your-nose game, I will to. I also do it because it's a very bitchin' ruby red. Anyway, this is what pisses me off today. Everything in this province at least is hijacked by Christianity--and as I write this I find, in fact, that I'd be GLAD for another religion to take its place. I would be more than happy to hear MORE about Islam and Judaism and, even more so, Buddhism (your God forbid we should spread a message of peace and serenity) or any other less popular, more difficult, more spiritual, less full of shit religion. I'm sick of it--take your Jesus and shove him; I don't give a damn. Stop trying to save my soul; it doesn't need your charity! Christ on a crutch! ..........Yeah. So that's what's annoying me today. Don't like it, TS, because I can be pissed off by whatever I wish to be pissed off by. And I know this will start a veritable festival of the slinging of the shit, so have at thee, have at me, have at whatever the fuck you want. I'm pissed, you should be pissed too. Silver_dragon87 Posted October 6, 2005 Author Posted October 6, 2005 I am an atheist--an atheist pagan. Just because I don't worship any divine being doesn't mean I don't have a religion, technically. Pagans are an assorted group who basically don't fall under any other religion--we can be atheists if we wish to be. Though you could say that I DO worship a divine force, that being nature, which we are outside of. At any rate, you're not reading things--I AM an atheist, but also a pagan. Hence, when they see the star, Christians chuck a spaz and cry witchcraft. Most irritating. PS: builder, how dare you equate catholicism with paganism! I'm genuinely offended. If I had an alter and it were tended by young boys, I most certainly would NOT try to fondle them. Quote Everyone pound your feet to this phenomenon. angie Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 For one thing, many people who practice Paganism also practice withcraft. Thus the 'witchcraft' label isn't so far off. Secondly, isn't being an 'atheist' pagan a bit of an oxymoron? Atheism is characterized by an absence of belief in the existence of gods. This absence of belief generally comes about either through deliberate choice, or from an inherent inability to believe religious teachings which seem literally incredible. It is not a lack of belief born out of simple ignorance of religious teachings. Paganism encompasses a belief in multiple deities, or the dual deities. It embraces the masculine and feminine aspect. So do explain, I am completely lost as to how you can be both. Oh, and Builder has every right to associate Paganism with Catholicism. There are many associations that can be made between Pagan practices/holidays and those of the Catholic Church. The holiday Ostara/Eostre (the celebration of the Vernal Equinox, honors the goddess, and celebrates the rebirth of the Earth) was around long before "Easter"..they fall uncannily close together. Here's a bit of reading for you: http://www.witchvox.com/va/dt_va.html?a=usma&c=holidays&id=1991 For example, the traditional coloring and giving of eggs at Easter has very pagan associations. For eggs are clearly one of the most potent symbols of fertility, and spring is the season when animals begin to mate and flowers and trees pollinate and reproduce. In England and Northern Europe, eggs were often employed in folk magic when women wanted to be blessed with children. There is a great scene in the film The Wicker Man where a woman sits upon a tombstone in the cemetery, holding a child against her bared breasts with one hand, and holding up an egg in the other, rocking back and forth as she stares at the scandalized (and very uptight!) Sargent Howie. Many cultures have a strong tradition of egg coloring; among Greeks, eggs are traditionally dyed dark red and given as gifts. angie Posted October 9, 2005 Posted October 9, 2005 Tori/Outlaw: I can't speak for everyone, but I know for sure that the atheists I know (personally) are offended by what religion represents, and the people who live by it. We DO believe that religion is a fairy-tale--and are thus offended that people not only allow themselves to be brainwashed by such blatant stupidity, but also insist on rubbing our faced in it! You can't walk down the street without some religion, 99% of the time with reference to Jesus, being thrown in your face. We'd be perfectly happy to let you all live your lives--unlike those "it is my duty to save your soul" fuckers--if you'd live it QUIETLY. Religious people always demand respect for their beliefs--well it'd be nice if we could have some of the same. So...praytell, which one is it? Atheist, or pagan? I'd love to hear this. It ought to be good. She's OBVIOUSLY not an atheist, or she wouldn't be so damn offended by "symbols" ... just like Tori said, she should be as offended by crosses as we are offended by the tooth fairy! ... seeing that crosses offends her, I would say she is very much a NON-Atheist as far as her belief in the supernatural is concerned... I would say she is more agnostic in that she doesn't know what to believe. Can you imagine getting all bent of shape at the sight of santa clause with a bell at walmart just before Christmas? eisanbt Posted October 9, 2005 Posted October 9, 2005 Paganism IS a religion under the contex of worshipping nature. No debine being is NEEDED for a something to be a religion. I believe there is a list posted on one of the fourms here of things that are defined as 'god' (or godly) one of which is nature and an observance for it etc.. You can find secs of christiens who worship nature as god incarnate, heck try reading 'The Dialouges' by Plato it covers that sort of thing (Concerning christienity not Peganism or wicka mind you...) The only no-religion religions really are Buddism/Taoism as they are more philosphies of living and don't concern themselves with a higher power. (In that respect, they are athiests) As for your Alberta situation, GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE! Its the most right-wing religion/nutcase province full of blue steak and rodeos! Hell, Nova Scotia is quite right and you trump the hell out of us. You want a switch-up, hop over to BC or Quebec, smoke some pot and get seduced by seemingly interesting frenchmen!
