Hey, guess what! Some people don't believe in god!

I am shocked at how many people really have no idea that there are people out there that can actually believe there is no god. I was talking to a group of people today and one woman actually said "Well, everyone believes in SOME kind of god..." She had apparently never even heard of the term atheist or agnostic. When I brought up the terms, apparently I was the only one in the group that knew what agnostic meant.

I am starting to get really pissed off at how much things are oriented to those who do have some sort of religious affiliation, Christianity inparticular.

Just because a large portion of the world has deluded themselves into believing in one of of the thousands of different types of gods out there does not mean that everyone does. The more I study this stuff the more frustrated I get. Now I understand why some of the atheists I know online are so angry all the time. lol

I have got news for you. Everyone believes in God (or gods) ... see the following definition:

[n] a material effigy that is worshipped as a god; "thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image"; "money was his god"

[n] any supernatural being worshipped as controlling some part of the world or some aspect of life or who is the personification of a force

[n] the supernatural being conceived as the perfect and omnipotent and omniscient originator and ruler of the universe; the object of worship in monotheistic religions

[n] a man of such superior qualities that he seems like a deity to other people; "he was a god among men"

Unless you are completely void of any beliefs at all, you believe in something that is a god.

Thanks for a comment that is pretty much irrelevant. I think you know what kind of god the post is referring to.

There are atheists and there are agnostics and I think people confuse the two. Agnostics question the existence of God but keep an open mind on the possibility that there is something out there greater than themselves, be it nature or aliens or whatever. Atheists do not believe in any higher power of any kind. The complete absence of belief. Of-course those who are truly atheists are not offended by Religion any more than I am offended by Fairytales.

A man of such superior qualities that he seems like a deity to other people;

This 'definition' seems kinda lose to me. What the fuck is this supposed to mean? Are we speaking about Micheal Jordan when he was in a zone? This particular definition sounds more like slang then anything else.

I do not believe in any form of god as there is absolutely no reason for me to.

However I do leave open the possibility of any supernatual explanation concievable. That does not suggest belief.

I'm so sick of people asserting that everyone must have some belief. Why must everyone have some sort of label?? It's been this way since the dawn of time.

That is EXACTLY right, Tori! Makes you wonder why the so-called "atheists" are so offended by the "under God" part of the pledge... it doesn't make any sense!

Atheist are a sorted lot. I have had alot of dealings with them on atheist forums and for the most part they are constructed of militant homosexuals, femi-nazis, and egotistical intellectuals. To them there is a clear line drawn down the center divide. You either believe in a god, or you do not believe in any god.

From SD: absolutely not true! While some people say they're an atheist but still worship some being or THING as God, take it from the horse's mouth; some most certainly do NOT. As I've said before, if I HAD to call something my God I would--that doesn't mean that I do. Most of you also know my admiration of Alexander the Great--but he's no god. Nor are any of my favourite characters, no matter how much I adore them ;) In other words, your statement can't be true if someone can disprove it and I can because I have no God. So tell me again how everyone believes in some form of God.

Tori/Outlaw: I can't speak for everyone, but I know for sure that the atheists I know (personally) are offended by what religion represents, and the people who live by it. We DO believe that religion is a fairy-tale--and are thus offended that people not only allow themselves to be brainwashed by such blatant stupidity, but also insist on rubbing our faced in it! You can't walk down the street without some religion, 99% of the time with reference to Jesus, being thrown in your face. We'd be perfectly happy to let you all live your lives--unlike those "it is my duty to save your soul" fuckers--if you'd live it QUIETLY. Religious people always demand respect for their beliefs--well it'd be nice if we could have some of the same.

As for the people, 9/10 religious people I have met have been obnoxious, arrogant, and...well...stupid. (See brainwashing)

Anywho, that's my two cents which for once is worth something since it's me we're talking about, ne? ;)

Everyone pound your feet to this phenomenon. Now, let's make it loud, let's show 'em all how you move to this phenomenon. Roll! Open your soul, maybe lose control inside of this phenomenon. Just let yourself go and let everyone know you move to this phenomenon.

I believe Outlaw is an atheist.

I completely respect your right not to believe what I do and I can empathize with your position. I am, however, not offended by your views, and I can not see how you are offended my mine.

What you must realize is that everyone believes the way they do because they think their belief is the correct one. Otherwise why would they believe that way? This means that everyone on the face of the Earth goes around thinking that their belief is correct and anyone who does not believe like them is ignorant of the truth. Atheist

I also know true atheists that are offended by religious issues that are forced upon them. Hell, I'm agnostic and I am offended by it.

Like I said, there are Christians who are offended by pushy Religious Zealots. Even if you believe something, you don't want it shoved in your face. It's a big turn-off.

I am an atheist. Proud to be one. Just like Muslims are proud of Islam. Christians are proud of their God. I just choose not to go with religion because it is not my thing. I have somewhat harsh views about religion I will admit but I try to keep an open mind. Sometimes religion is all a person has. It gives them strength and hope. Sometimes a prayer is what gets some people though hard times. Sometimes that is how someone was brought up. As long as it is not used to start wars, or to convert unwilling people, religion is acceptable. A few verses such as "One nation under God." is not offensive. It isn't exactly shoved in anyone's face and it isn't threatening anyone. At the same time, some people just don't want to deal with God and that is understandable. Some people want NOTHING to do with any religious figure. The thing that most atheists fail to realize is that there are alot more theists than atheists and thus we will be exposed to them whether we like it or not.

We just have to learn that we may not follow a religion, but at least show respect to those people who follow it. We are all still people. As for the religious, they need to learn that not everyone is going to follow their views and beliefs. As long as we all know what line to not cross, we can all coexist without any type of religious animosity between ourselves.

A better way to put it is "everyone has something that functions in a God-like role for them". For most atheists it is a belief in the perfectability of man through reason. For others it is money, for still others it is a ideal of freedom from imagined religious oppression.

In this way, their "God" is something bigger than themselves to which ultimate allegiance is owed. And it becomes a religion because of the formation of criteria of belief (no supernatural God, man's perfectability by reason, society should be ordered by reason only, etc.) - which by definition is "dogma".

A Christian with a Bible is a nuisance to your comfortable level of non-belief. And a Christian with a brain cannot be as easily dismissed as you might be accustomed to. But a Christian with both is a dangerous thing.
