Cogito Ergo Sum Posted October 9, 2005 Posted October 9, 2005 http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/10/08/tech/main927878.shtml Here's the brief description. ...The Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, plans to award $2 million to the fastest vehicle to cover the race in less than 10 hours. The taxpayer-funded race was intended to spur development of robots that could be used on the battlefield without remote controls. The race announcer did not immediately declare a winner because 22 of the 23 robots left the starting line at staggered times at dawn, racing against the clock rather than each other. Stanley finished in less than 7 Quote . I put no stock in religion. By the word "religion" I have seen the lunacy of fanatics of every denomination be called the will of god. angie Posted October 9, 2005 Posted October 9, 2005 Who the hell approves this shit? Makes you wonder if the government is using drugs. Or just completely out of their fucking minds. The money could be much better spent. I like the idea of using it to create a super fuel efficient car. Or maybe we could be spending the money trying to figure out how to END the war? How's that for a concept? Quote http://www.darwinawards.com/ http://www.snopes.com http://www.breakthechain.org STOP THE SPAM!! Click Me You Know You Want To
Cogito Ergo Sum Posted October 9, 2005 Author Posted October 9, 2005 Absolutely Angie! My point is one of "USE THE MONEY TO STIMULATE MASSIVE PUBLIC THOUGHT TO BETTER THE USA AND/OR HUMANITY IN GENERAL!" There is nothing quite as stimulating to a scientific mind as a little healthy competition. Good. Utilize that driving force to bring about POSITIVE results through POSITIVE ideas. Another example of a not so hard concept. Furthermore, if you underestimate the ingenuity of the common man, you are a fool. Most of the great stuff you enjoy in your life today, was invented in some bastards garage, basement, or attic, not a professional government laboratory! Quote . I put no stock in religion. eisanbt Posted October 9, 2005 Posted October 9, 2005 The problem is not only that these government dick-shits aren't intelligent enough to button up their own pants, but they havn't got a lick of sense in them! An IQ is one thing and i'll give that SOME in gov are as well educated as you can get (Not including GW who is nearly legally retarded, thats no joke), but for some reason that is beyond the ability of those of us who have both brain hemisperes and our sanity intact, they arer set into positions of power to coinfuse and anger the general populus. Gives us a good reason to read the news and keeps Jon Steward in business but its otherwise infuriating. When will they learn that sensability is much more importent then your IQ? Outlaw2747 Posted October 9, 2005 Posted October 9, 2005 That would be questionable as our species have done alot of self-destructive things throughout the century. Some might say since we been making other species extinct, some might say the day we thought up nukes, and others might say this day and age. It is all about perspective...all these stories I read here and other places really questions the intelligence of our species as a whole. fullauto Posted October 10, 2005 Posted October 10, 2005 2 Million dollars? Is that really all that much to spend on something that could result in not only fewer military Human casualties, but the technological benefits could make all of our lives a lot better also! Imagine if DARPA had rescinded funding to the Transfer Control Protocol systems project because it would only be used to ensure that military computer would be able to reroute information that would normally transfer through 'nuclear effected areas'.... Image that... Without TCP, You, me, and builder wouldn't be able to rail against our military budget on a free speech medium such as this without some VERY expensive phone bills... Imagine if Eisenhower had taken the funding away from the National Highway Act because it was going to be used in the event of war to rapidly shift troops and materials around our country... The highways too turned out to benefit the country as a whole rather than just the military... Imagine if we had stopped working on the airplane because it was only being used to bomb Germans... would your life be better now? How about if the Military decided to stop experiments on a little known mold called penicillin because it would only stop battle field infections, and would thus prolong the war... Next time you get a shaving cut and you don't die, think of that... Should we have left the German V2 rocket program in ruins because it was a military program? Little tough to get to the moon without it, and not to mention that the satellites that TCP is running over right now to make you read this shit is flying around in space... Would we have satellites if it were not for the cold war and it's need for real time imagery, and if we did, how would we get them up there without rockets? $2 million is a drop in the bucket for something that useful... But that's Capitalism for ya! The government sees a need for something, and first, it looks to the civilian sector... The civilian sector produces the item in question and gets the contract to build it, usually creating JOBS, some of which will pay 200-300 K a year for some engineers.... And The company (usually American) gets to keep and upgrade the technology.... These Upgrades will revolve around civilian uses, and once the market is established, we can all benefit from it... Let's see what is possible for a measly $2 million investment... Cars that drive themselves... great for old people, blind people, lower insurance Cheaper distribution costs.... 1/3 of all price is usually distribution.... Imagine paying $1 for milk again... or $2 for OJ! border patrol drones.... you can't even imagine how much that would save us every year How about knowing that we have all but solved a key problem with the production of automated robots... PRICELESS The US has had the controlling portion of stock on most of the worlds most priced technologies... The Plane, the car, mass production, penciling, the internet, satellite tech, tv, effective radar, missiles, the space race, etc, etc.... But here we are in 2005, looking at 2010, and realizing that this country has lost a lot of it's standing... everyone can build a plane, almost everyone has a car, and if you don't, it's not like its a great wonder.... it's a fucking car, not one of the Beatles! The Oriental nations have BY FAR surpassed us in mass production techniques, slave labor or not, they are still way ahead. If you're reading this, the internet is no black magic. The only part of this that is still ours is the space race... We are the first and only nation to put men on the moon! But guess what... The Chinese have already made plans to be there by 2020... So what's next.... Where is OUR generations CAR, or Penciling, or Moon landing?! We don't know where it is.... A major advance in robotics technology could be it, but we'll never know until we try it... Don't you think it's a little cheap to complain about $2 million that could really be used by many people in this country for many reasons, when we repeatedly blow $10 BILLION paying for illegal immigrants.... No, I do not believe that the movies are real; however, science fiction is the mother of invention. This is fact. Let's review shall we, some science fiction movie stuff that has now become reality. - In 1902, a 14-minute silent French film, "The Voyage to the Moon," introduced the world to a preposterous story about a group of men traveling to the moon. - Lasers, phasers, etc. - Mutant viruses escaped into the world that can kill mankind. - Video communication phones. - The Internet - Space station - Satellite based weaponry (al la James Bond) - Guns that can fire bullets which are guided and controlled. (Yes, we do have such things, including controlled explosive discharge rounds) - Holographic technology - Nuclear technology - Genetic mutation and manipulation - Eugenics - Surgical lasers and other high tech surgical tools including microsurgery and laser eye surgery (gee, like LASIK) - Particle accelerators and atom smashers - robots (Hell, anybody can buy an AIBO now, and Sony keeps working with their QRIO micro humanoid robots - only about 100 so far in the world, but give them a decade or two.) The movie iRobot is not so far fetched is it? - Honda's ASIMO almost full size humanoid robot - TMR (Tactical Mobile Robot) a technology being developed right here in the USA in Idaho. There are literally thousands of things once the fables of books, stories, and movies, which are now reality. Lastly, I cannot help but think of the similarities of creating battlefield machines that can think and operate themselves with the concept behind the movies Quote . I put no stock in religion. Cogito Ergo Sum Posted October 11, 2005 Author Posted October 11, 2005 CES, Science fiction has indeed been the basis for invention and lots of it! But there is a huge difference between what actually happens in movies and real life! For example (one of your examples BTW), in a James Bond Movie where there is satelite based weaponry, some mad genius gains control over these devices and 007 must stop him... sure the weopns exist, but where are the evil genius who actually capture the satelites? Where is 007? There are ghost and horror movies where people enter a house and get eaten by monsters, just because houses exist, doesn't make the monsters real. CES, you really do need to get a grip, buddy! Movies are figments of someones imagination as are inventions. You need to be able to discern the fantasy part from the reality... And I'm afraid that by basing your conception of reality on movies is not , ummmm, very healthy. I'll say it again, PUT DOWN THE BONG. You're way to stoned. Nowhere did I ever state that movies were reality; you implied this but I never said that. Go back and READ. What I said is that I had seen this topic in a movie before. There is a huge difference. Then, you tried to make fun of me by asking me if I believed in movies as real to which I corrected you again, and showed you the errors of your ways, but you only made yourself appear more the fool. On second thought, go fire up that bong, because observation of what is going on around you, and making logical deductions about the direction of the future, eludes you. Toke on buddy. Quote . Cogito Ergo Sum Posted October 11, 2005 Author Posted October 11, 2005 Concepts from movies turn into reality, yes. Correct. This was my point. Movies in their entirety are reality, no.
