"Cambodian Couple Suck Daughter's Blood 1 hour, 40 minutes ago

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia - Black magic may have driven a Cambodian couple to bite off their daughter's thumb nails and suck her blood, officials said Sunday.

Chheng Chhorn, 46, and Srun Yoeung, 37, attacked their 12-year-old child before dawn on Thursday while she was still asleep, biting off her thumb nails and a small part of her nose to drink her blood, said Keo Norea Phy, a police official in Kampong Cham province where the incident occurred.

Neighbors rushed to the couple's house and rescued the girl after hearing her screams, he said.

After treatment at a hospital in Kampong Cham, about 50 miles east of Phom Penh, the girl was placed in the custody of other villagers. Relatives had taken her parents to a black magic healer to chase away the evil spirit that was believed to have possessed them, the police official said.

"We, the police, just have no idea what offense to charge them with," Keo Norea Phy said.

Preap Nhim, a local official, said the couple sold noodles in their village and had never before acted in a strange manner. He said they may have been driven by the spirit guarding the altar they kept inside their house.

Cambodia is a Buddhist country, but many people in the countryside are deeply superstitious. Some claim the ability to communicate with the dead and cure the sick by exorcising evil spirits from their bodies."

So, remind me what is the US supposed to do to help people with this kind of intellect??? Besides keep them away from their own children???

Hopefully NOTHING! The correct response is to let natural selection rid the gene pool of such vermin!

The first amendment provides our constitution with its voice.

The second amendment provides its teeth.

Hope that when technology reaches them in 50 years, intellectual enlightenment will follow. Just think about the prevalence of superstition in the US just 150 years ago. It is gone for the most part, but even now, some still lingers.

Well Pol Pot did kill all the educated people in Cambodia so what else do you expect?

Was that just after the covert blanket bombing of the nation by Nixon?

The carpet bombing that had started covertly in 1970 to stop America's enemies from Vietnam using Cambodia as a base outraged the American public and crippled Cambodia as a nation.

Under pressure from Congress, the Nixon administration finally ended the bombing in August 1973.

The Cambodian army gradually lost more territory to the Khmer Rouge who began a reign of terror in 1975.

Prince Sihanouk became head of state for a brief period before he was forced into political exile by Pol Pot.

For the next four years Pol Pot oversaw the deaths of an estimated 1.7 million people, by execution, forced labour and starvation.

The Vietnamese forced out Pol Pot in 1979 and withdrew from Cambodia 10 years later. In 1993 the monarchy was restored with Sihanouk as king.

I agree TIZZ, but it seems that is what everyone thinks, America should go and help every down-troden country. I am sick of hearing about how bad things are in Africa, especially in light of how bad things are here in the US.

I fail to see in the article where the US has anything to do with it or how US involvement even became an issue here. It's just a news story

In the article nothing is mentioned. However in the recent G8 conference in the UK, all the talk was about helping Africa. I was watching Oprah one day and she was talking about how we should help Africa. Back when the First Bush invaded the Gulf, everyone was saying if the US was such a Humanitarian we would be helping Africa. It has been talked about for some time, however not mentioned inthis article.

I have felt for some time that other countries should be left to get on with it.

Africa has NOTHING what so ever to do with Cambodia. Helping Africa is a matter of stopping a genocide. There is a difference when you are talking about helping millions of people overcome tyranny (not to mention holding up on a pledge made to the UN) and getting involved with a single, relatively unimportant incident in Cambodia. Of course par of the reason poeple are angry about Africa is because of how the US not only helped Pol Pot commit genocide in Cambodia but ignored the act itself (we ran away much like we did in Sudan)

I am not following where you are coming from at all here. How on EARTH did you ever connect this incident in Cambodia with Africa at all??

As has been discussed many times with reference to other countries, shouldn't America pay more attention to the problems here at home then to those abroad.

I posted the article and used it to point out that not only are we leaving our own people high and dry but what on earth can we really do for people like that.

Just as in Iraq we are trying to make them be a democracy. Not every country is going to be a successful democracy. Not every country's population can support a democracy. This country is one of them.

When I read an article, I don't just take what they say and walk away, I ask myself, how does this impact other issues at hand today.

If this does not answer your question, maybe you need a little sleep.

Are you retarded? And how did we help Pol Pot? He didnt start his killing untill WE left! We tried to help the South Vietnamese but the Liberals here wouldnt let us and we left and the North massacred 700,000 South Vietnamese after we left, "those little cute Communist" as Jane Fonda and other Hollywood useful idiots put it showed their true colors once we left, but most people that had any sense already knew how the brave cute little Communist were.

I do agree with you though about trying to help other Countries, Giving billions to Africa is a waste of money! The socialist Governments over there is the reason for the poverty! I think we should mind our own business and let the rest of the World starve if they cant make it on their own. If I were the leader I would seal off the border and not let ANYONE else in here and only take care of our selfs and if the Liberals think that would be too fascist (and they would) then I would dig a grave about the size of Iowa and put them all in it.

BTW you dont think Saddam Hussein was a tyrant?  You need to go google some videos of this mans regimes doing things to people that a dog shouldnt ever have to go through.

OK so because a story is carried in the American press you are assuming it is to get Americans to fix it? I am still lost. What the hell does native superstition have to do with democracy and America?

OK so there was a story referring to tragic effects of ancient superstitions carried in tech AP. Somehow you link this not only to Africa but to democracy and Americas involvement with other nations and you say I need sleep?

OK we supported Pol Pot BEFORE he took power simply because he was against the North Vietnamese (Common knowledge) and as soon as things got tough we bailed because we were not supposed to be involved with Cambodia really at all. And now what the fuck does Saddam have to do with the posted article on Cambodia? Are you people all cracked? I never said anything about him. Geez there are WAY too many people around here smokin' the funky tabaccy

No one said (or maybe I over looked it?) that America should do ANYTHING about the parents sucking blood out of their kid, or ANYTHING else concerning Cambodia! If someone did please quote it!! You NEED to go back and re-read the whole thread so you can see how America/other Nations was brought up in the conversation.

OK we supported Pol Pot BEFORE he took power simply because he was against the North Vietnamese (Common knowledge) and as soon as things got tough we bailed because we were not supposed to be involved with Cambodia really at all.

So, we didnt physically help him take power now did we? We turned against him when we saw what kind of animal he was!

We bailed when things got tough? Things were much tougher in that war in the mid to late 60s! We won that war on the battle field but lost it in Washington because of the FUCKING LIBERAL LOONEY TOONS!!

And now what the fuck does Saddam have to do with the posted article on Cambodia? Are you people all cracked? I never said anything about him. Geez there are WAY too many people around here smokin' the funky tabaccy

I mentioned Saddam because you said helping Africa would be stopping a genocide and helping millions of people overcome tyranny, Saddam has committed genocide over the last 25 years! And we are helping millions of people overcome tyranny.

Read the link. If the then ruling party was not ousted by military interference by the US military and CIA meddling, Pol Pot would not have gained a foothold.

Ousting the ruling party leaves a power void, (think present-day Iraq, or 1950's Iran). Oh, but you won that one too? So fucking sorry.

That is where it started for me. How Africa came into it DON'T know, but it has NOTHING to do with the article. I also don't know why you mentioned Saddam, the thought of hi had not crossed my mind. Africa came up and I questioned why it had ANYTHING to do with this. I have no clue whatsoever why US involvement in Cambodia, Africa and Iraq came into discussion under a posted article about a twisted Cambodian superstition.

NO I am reading it. I am seeing you make associations, I am just not understanding WHY you are making them. Again, how did all of this come from an article about a few traditionalists following an ancient superstition? That is what really confuses me.

You are... Without a doubt... one of the biggest fucking meat whistles I have ever had the displeasure of reading... I would expect more from a person 'a little long in the tooth', but I guess I'll just have to get used to your nonsensical drivel...

According to you, The US is to blame for almost every single fucking problem this world has! But you fail to realize that the problems that generally exist in 'the rest of the world', are either non-existent, or severely less common here!

So if we cause ALL the problems... why don't they crop up here first?!

OK then, It is better to say that the US played NO role in the atrocities of Cambodia in the 70's? We should just ignore the relationship we had with the Khmer Rouge? We should just ignore the U S's history of making allies simply because someone is fighting our known enemy? Sure we were not entirely at fault but we ARE at fault for not stopping what we saw happening and completely ignoring it to this day (IE the Sudan) We should have a higher responsibility if we are going to bill ourselves as such a mighty power and police. With power comes responsibility and unfortunately we love to dodge that one
