"Piggy banks 'offend UK Muslims'

British banks are banning piggy banks because they may offend some Muslims.

Halifax and NatWest banks have led the move to scrap the time-honoured symbol of saving from being given to children or used in their advertising, the Daily Express/Daily Star group reports here.

Muslims do not eat pork, as Islamic culture deems the pig to be an impure animal.

Salim Mulla, secretary of the Lancashire Council of Mosques, backed the bank move.

"This is a sensitive issue and I think the banks are simply being courteous to their customers," he said.

However, the move brought accusations of political correctness gone mad from critics.

"The next thing we will be banning Christmas trees and cribs and the logical result of that process is a bland uniformity," the Dean of Blackburn, Reverend Christopher Armstrong, said.

"We should learn to celebrate our difference, not be fearful of them."

Khalid Mahmoud, the Labour MP for a Birmingham seat and one of four Muslim MPs in Britain, also criticised the piggy-bank ban.

Advertisement"We live in a multicultural society and the traditions and symbols of one community should not be obliterated just to accommodate another," Mr Mahmoud said.

"I doubt many Muslims would be seriously offended by piggy banks."

How long do you think the UK will tolerate this?

Okay this is taking it way toooooooooooo far... I have had like 9 or 10 piggy banks before and I still have a few lying around now. The only way I avoid A pig is by eating it... Did the banks just diliberatley take them out or were there complaints? A piggy bank doesn't contain what a pig contains there for it is Halal... Infact I bet it should be recommended since it is Islamic to organize your money lol. I think I still have a NatWest Baby Pig, from when I was a child, when I lived in Switzerland.

You really are a "bad" muslim. There may be hope for you yet!

Yay for reasonable Muslims!!

Yes...yes let's ban the Christmas trees, we might offend environmentalists.

Let's ban clothing, we might offend nudists.

Let's ban rap, we might offend musicians. Oh, wait.

Anyway, banning piggy banks because of one religion is just retarded. If it offends you so much, don't have a fucking piggy bank.

Personally, I think we should all be allowed to have our pigs and eat 'em too.

I want to report a double murder. If you go one mile east on Columbus Parkway to the public park, you will find kids in a brown car. They were shot with a 9mm Luger. I also killed those kids last year. Good bye

Brooks, I like you. Now get out of here. Go home.

The Qur'an don't see pigs as evil they are just filthy animals in their natural habitat. One of the key factors being that a Pig would eat her young if she was starved, I think there are very few animals that would do that. The Qur'an says that we cannot eat pig meat, animals that we found dead, animals that have been half devoured by other animals, animals that have been strangled, animals that have died from falling from high places. I don't think that I have missed any.

Indeed the harm is found in the meat of the pig. The devastating trichinosis parasite, Trichinella spiralis, (also the pork tapeworm Taenia solium) survives in the meat of pigs, NOT the fat. More than 150,000 people are infected annually in the United States alone.

It doesn't say, "Don't collect piggy banks or pig toys". I am a Muslim just not an extremist.

That's crap. It's not the ONLY form of food poisoning, and it is easily prevented by properly cooking the meat.

Is trichinellosis common in the United States?

Infection was once very common and usually caused by ingestion of undercooked pork. However, infection is now relatively rare. During 1997-2001, an average of 12 cases per year were reported. The number of cases has decreased because of legislation prohibiting the feeding of raw-meat garbage to hogs, commercial and home freezing of pork, and the public awareness of the danger of eating raw or undercooked pork products. Cases are less commonly associated with pork products and more often associated with eating raw or undercooked wild game meats.

12 is a far cry from 150,000.

Growing up Catholic in a predominately Baptist community, all the kids had piggy banks. I had one, too. However, my mother strictly forbade me to put money in it on Fridays.

I just went and picked out a pig for my sister's 50'th birthday bash.

I'm not gonna be too kind to that little sucker. Just a bullet to the head, strip out its guts, ram a stainless steel rod from arsehole to mouth, and set it spinning slowly over a low fire.

I just love traditional fare. ;)

CDC. Huh! There you go with that crazy research stuff again. Just for once, do you think you can trust the boy. The CDC might say it's 12 but if Hamza123 says it's 150,000 people, I'm going with Hamza. CDC who? What do they know about disease anyway?

:p I am muslim and I don't see anything wrong with piggy bamks. Frankly I wonder why people even care. Piggy banks are the least of my worries. The top of my worries are college applications and project deadlines.

Here is an Encyclopedia's research for ya.

of 300 Million people 12 people is a far-cry.

The prognosis for recovery from trichinosis is generally good. Most people with the disease are unaware that they have even been infected. It is estimated that between 150,000 and 300,00 people in the United States become infected yearly, so that at any given time, 1.5 million people have T. spiralis infections. Most of these people have such light cases that trichinosis is never identified. Worm burden is measured in larvae per gram of muscle tissue; people with 10 or fewer larvae per gram of muscle tissue usually have no significant symptoms. When the number climbs to 100 larvae per gram of muscle tissue, the symptoms become noticeable. People with over 1000 larvae per gram of muscle tissue are usually extremely ill, and often die. The mortality rate of trichinosis is about 1%

That's a good way to have pig.

Best pig I've had was in PNG. We used to go pig hunting in Papua New Guinea with the locals - spears and dogs only. Anyway we'd get the pig, burn the hair off over a fire, then chuck it on heated rocks in a pit in the ground and cover with banana leaves. Sit back and enjoy the smell for a while. There it's called a Mu-Mu...in New Zealand the Maoris do a similar thing and call it a hangi.

Let's not forget the ban on pigs is also good for Jews - pigs were banned in the Old Testament which the Jews largely follow under a different name. This tugging the forelock to PC has gone waaaaay too far...I think at every immigration entrance all applicants should be made to eat some pork.

hamza - as I understand it, in Islam if you eat pork then you won't go to see mohammed when you die. This is far more than a health issue for muslims afaik!

I've been to a few hungies (sp?)

Everything seems to take on the same flavour.

Banana leaves.

Pork is supposedly "unclean", I guess because pigs are often living in filth, and seem to like it. Pigs will eat carrion, but only when more nutritious food is scarce.

Pork is also so similar to human flesh, that it would be hard to distinguish the two meats. Hence the Papuan description of Japanese people as "long pig", during the second world war.

Gotta love them fuzzy-wuzzy angels. Imagine if we tried calling any other dark-skinned race that kinda name?
