I tend to be a bit of a skeptic when it comes to traditional folklore, customs (hence my degree in Folklore Mythology). I've always known the falsehood of the holiday, but I've read the following texts several times and it only solidifies my view of the holiday.

The Plain Truth About Christmas

Perhaps this could shed some light on the doubtful or infuriate those who aren't so skeptical.

Thanks, RO. I knew about most of the origins, but not of the Xmas tree.

I would've preferred to read articles from a less biased POV (the PAGAN IS EVIL attitude got to be a bit irritating)but very informative nonetheless. Here are a few more interesting reads:

Origins of Easter

I'm not quite sure why people get upset over the fact that their precious Christian holiday has Pagan roots. How many people do you know that celebrate Christmas because of Jesus? Most are so commercialized that the religious meaning is lost on them anyhow.

I have known of this for years...and it doesn't bother me at all. Its all about folklore. How we celebrate it now is what matters. I am not a pagan because I celebrate a holiday that has some of their attributes.

I also celebrate Easter and we all know thats got very little to do with the resurection of Christ.

I enjoy all the holiday trappings, my daughter and I decorate and go through all the traditions. I believe traditions make a person feel grounded.

We decorate to a degree for EVERY holiday. We put up window clings, I even have a tree that is meant to hand Easter eggs on it. I have turkeys and pumpkins for Thanksgiving and Halloween. I have Shamrocks for St patricks day.

Hearing that these holidays are not all about Christ makes Christians feel insecure. One more instance where they would rather go on being decieved then know the truth.

I would still celebrate christmas as a social holiday, which is mostly was it now is. Just an excuse to get together and enjoy people's company while emptying your pockets on whatever it is you spend money on this time of year.

As young kids, the culmination of christmas day's feast was always a watermelon fight, followed by water-bomb fight. Hey, it's hot here on xmas day.

Persevere,

it pisses people off.

Stinking hot would be more apt of a description for most of our summer break. I remember dad always saying, as he rubbed watermelon into your face, "it's good for your complexion". :D

LOLOLOL.....that sounds like alot of fun.

Since Diane and I have moved to Florida we do some things that are more warm weather, like today we went to the pool after we ate. Someday we hope to have a pool in our own backyard so we can sunbathe naked.
