phreakwars Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 Phreak... What do you think of those mini cp's? Probably not much would be my guess. I saw a few cases down in San Diego. They must use all laptop components.Quite the opposite actually. I believe you are speaking of the SFF machines. These IMO are the next wave of the future. I have been saying for quite a few years now, that the day will come where you will buy a PC kit just like you buy a model car or model rocket. Small form factor PC's only prove my theory. Alot of the SFF PC's actually have some pretty kick ass features, like front panel L.E.D. display, remote control, etc.. A few years ago, you would avoid one like the plague, the internal parts were basically, like you said... LAPTOPS... But today's machines are VERY capable, just as much as a desktop machine, and fit in very small places. They are also fairly easy to upgrade in terms of CPU, Memory, video card, etc.. I won't say they are perfect for someone on a budget, because they are still a bit pricey, but they are perfect for things like making a MCPC (Media Center PC). For instance, a SFF PC with integrated 6100 GeForce graphics and a basic Sempron CPU paired with a decent TV tuner, wireless keyboard, mouse and remote control, and DVD burner, then add an OS like Windows MCE to it, you get one hell of a little workhorse mid level gaming machine/media center. Perfect for say a college dorm room, or small apartment with limited space. I built one for a college kid about 2 months ago for his dorm at the local community college, I delivered him a pizza a while back and checked out how he has it setup, he has the audio out connected to his stereo and a flat panel monitor all on his side of his room on a little shelf, does EVERYTHING he wants !! . . I did like the cases. They looked pretty sharp. I thought you would have to have the laptop cpu because of heat. I bought a new thumb drive, radio reciver for my wife's nano and some games for my son at "Fries" a computer store in San D Now there sending me the c/net magazine. They had one of those mini media cp's in it. Shit they're sending this to the wrong person. I'm gonna get in trouble looking at all the new gadgets. How about the star watcher. It tells what star your looking at and will even give you a tour of the stars. That's gotta be for the rich and famous. jokersarewild Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 Yeah, I would rather have a normal PC right now because I haven't had a chance to take apart and put a Mini CP back together. I would like to play around a little bit first, before I consider actually buying one... And I would also wonder about the upgradability... Quote RoyalOrleans is my real dad!
jokersarewild Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 If you want them to share files and printer you need to do home or small office network. the wireless network is just for the laptop getting on line. And make sure you trun off the firewall. then turn it back on after your done. It makes it easer. And make sure the "don't allow exections" in unchecked in the fire wall settings. That was my mistake today. My supervisor said that I should change the DHCPNode Type. It's a registry thing, and he gave me a .reg file to do it, so I don't have to do it manually. My supervisor said that I should change the DHCPNode Type. It's a registry thing, and he gave me a .reg file to do it, so I don't have to do it manually. Oh I didn't no it was on its own server. I was thinking of just a small home one. Quote "You can't stop insane people from doing insane things by passing insane laws. That's just insane!" Penn & Teller NEVER FORGOTTEN
jokersarewild Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 Oh I didn't know it was on its own server. I was thinking of just a small home one. It is a small home one, no server. He just told me that the wrong DHCPNodeType setting could stop communications between computers. Quote RoyalOrleans is my real dad!
snafu Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 Not that I know of. bob or Phreak for sure know better than me but DHCPNode Type should be for LAN servers. If it's just a few computers connected in a room you just need to do the home office wizard. Quote "You can't stop insane people from doing insane things by passing insane laws. That's just insane!" snafu Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 Hey Phreak... My wife's laptop keeps losing the internet connection. I got a new router and modem for the laptop but it's still doing it. I have to refresh the connection each time she starts up the cp. Being a half ass guru I don't want to take it in to get it looked at. Do you have any suggestions on what I can do to fix the problem? Help! Quote "You can't stop insane people from doing insane things by passing insane laws. That's just insane!" Penn & Teller NEVER FORGOTTEN
builder Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 Snafu, try leaving the lappie on standby, instead of shutting it down and rebooting. It works for me. Quote Persevere, it pisses people off.

Help! What do you mean by refresh? Since you are running dial-up(you said modem), I don't see what your problem is... Could be inexperience on my part, but...I dunno. snafu Posted May 20, 2006 Posted May 20, 2006 No I'm not on dial up. It's the wireless broadband modem that you put in the PCMCA slot on the laptop. Quote "You can't stop insane people from doing insane things by passing insane laws. That's just insane!" Penn & Teller NEVER FORGOTTEN
snafu Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 Well I think I found the problem. It's the card reader. It won't reconize the Modem card when it starts up. But if I take it out and put it back in it finds it and everthing is okay. I wonder if there is a fix for that. Thats why I hate laptops. You can't just crack them open and check stuff out. Sure you can but you usally mess something else up. I wonder if there's a cleaner or some other fix for it. Any suggesstions? phreakwars Posted May 21, 2006 Posted May 21, 2006 Nothing comes to mind right off hand, I used to have that problem on a laptop of mine too. I'd always have to do a cold reboot to get it to work again . . . Quote https://www.facebook.com/phreakwars

You know, the startup stuff? It could be in there, although if I shut down my computer with a folder open, and i use the power button to do it, it will show it later. snafu Posted June 23, 2006 Posted June 23, 2006 Dose anybody know how to use mail merge in Word. I need to make some labels of a lot of destinations that I have in an excel file. I used to be able to do it with an older version of Word and Excel but for the life of me I can't now. Quote "You can't stop insane people from doing insane things by passing insane laws. snafu Posted June 24, 2006 Posted June 24, 2006 http://www.depts.drew.edu/its/docs/desktop/microsoft/Office/Word/XP/mailmerge.php It worked for me. You don't know how many times I've gone through that. I get through all the steps but then instead of the addresses ( in this case all the names of the villages in Alaska) don't come up. It just says " new record" in all the places for the labels. It won't put the village in. I'm that fucking close! I just did it fine in word 2000 but It wont' work in 2003. Vortex Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Howdyho.... Ive got some problems, router ones...and im not quite sure what is wrong or if the fix is easy because i have no idea where to look.... The original way it was connected works just fine (Cable Modem connected to router, router connected to 2 desktop computers).... The problems come from when the 3rd computer was acquired....and a wireless router added to connect the laptop. Called the linksys help line thing and they had us go through several steps (like turning off some dhcp or something like that) and we had internet on all computers....for like 10 minutes. Then the Hard wired computers no longer could find websites. They recognized internet was connected...but couldnt get any websites to work. OH and the way it was connected was (Cable Modem to first router...first router to wireless router). If i terminate the connection between the 2 routers the hardwired computers work fine. The moment the wireless router comes back into the connection...bam no internet again... Anyone know what i should do? (or more info if you need it...sure you do) HEEEELLLLPPP!! PS....i figured it could be a software issue so i decided to "try" to install the new routers software and just going from the wireless one and removing the first router from the equasion all together. But it does the same thing (no internet on hard wired computer...but wireless is just fine). AND when going through the software installation on my hardwire computer it wont actually installl anything because it cant connect to the router.... ARGH! Doesn't your wireless router have connectors for hard wired cp's? If not two routers need to be compatable and from the same company. Also you probably have hardware firewalls on each router that might be conflicting. I would shut them both down along with software firewalls on all the computers until it is connected. All else fails go get a router that has both hard wire and wireless. Quote "You can't stop insane people from doing insane things by passing insane laws. That's just insane!" eddo Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 All else fails go get a router that has both hard wire and wireless. or buy a wireles card for the hardwired computer and go all wireless using the one router. Quote I'm trusted by more women.
Vortex Posted November 10, 2006 Posted November 10, 2006 Yes i tried that too. The wireless router has slots for 4 hard wired computers...I have tried every single combination of the routers 'plug ins' as possible...including removing the original router from the equasion. So for me to actually use the internet till i can figure this out i have to use the 2 of them and do the "unplug the wireless router to use internet"...and then "plug it back in when im not using it so the wireless one can be in use"....(and i am not the one who uses the wireless router......) In other words...so long as the wireless router is connected in ANY way...i cant get internet service unless its disconected.... It doesnt make much sense to me logically...but to someone out there it might!! (especially since the 2 hardwired computers are the ones who have been paying for it the entire time...and the wireless one is the landlord upstiars......i have no problem disrupting his service at any time...but its an annoying inconvienience...)
