'boot camp' death... accident?

Even though the autopsy said he died of complications to his sickle cell trait, and the bruises on his body were attributed to his resuscitation attempts by medical examiners, the parents of this 14 year old 'boy' (in camp for PROBATION VIOLATION at 14!) claim that he was beaten to death, and plan to sue the state of Florida...

So let me get this right?!

With all your parenting wisdom, you raise a horrible child who lands himself in 'boot camp' and 14 for fucking probation violation, where he is a constant problem with guards and costs the state thousands every year for his medical treatment and education, and when he dies from an inherited disease you plan on suing the state?! Even though every expert involved in the case says he did not die as a result of 'beatings' (which in all likelihood he deserved!)...

If there ever was a case for forced sterilization, this is it...

<H1>Tape shows teen restrained at boot camp before dying

var clickExpire = "03/19/2006";var cnnStoryUrl = 'http://robots.cnn.com/2006/US/02/17/bootcamp.death.ap/index.html';var cnnDisplayDomesticCL = 1; var cnnDisplayIntlCL = 1;PANAMA CITY, Florida (AP) -- Authorities released a video tape Friday showing guards restraining a boy at a juvenile detention boot camp just hours before he died.

The parents of 14-year-old Martin Lee Anderson believe the footage, from a boot camp security camera, will show that guards beat their son to death. They were viewing the 1-hour, 20-minute tape at their lawyer's office in Tallahassee as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement made it public.

Two legislators who have seen the tape said Anderson was brutally beaten and kicked before he died January 6. They described an out-of-control situation, with guards punching and choking Anderson even as he went limp.

Anderson's family alleges he was beaten by guards on his first day at the boot camp. A medical examiner determined this week that the teen died from a blood disorder -- not from any injuries suffered in a beating.

News organizations had sued for the tape to be made public. The FDLE planned to release it when its investigation was complete, but said Friday it changed plans "due to compelling public interest and speculation as to its contents."

"The viewing of this will result in many questions, concerns and accusations," said Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen.

Anderson entered the camp January 5 because of a probation violation. He complained of breathing difficulties and collapsed during exercises that were part of the entry process. He died the next day at a Pensacola hospital.

The county sheriff's office, which runs the camp, said Anderson was restrained after he became uncooperative.

County Medical Examiner Dr. Charles Siebert said the boy's body had some bruises and abrasions, but he attributed them to attempts to resuscitate the youth.

Siebert said Anderson suffered internal bleeding because he had sickle cell trait, a disorder that caused his red blood cells to change shape and produce "a whole cascade of events" that led to hemorrhaging.

"It was a natural death," he said.

Anderson family attorney Benjamin Crump said he was skeptical of the autopsy results and expressed doubt that the sickle cell trait, if it existed, could cause such extensive damage to the teenager's internal organs.

The Justice Department announced Thursday it would investigate the case, along with the FBI. Federal officials planned to focus on whether camp guards violated Anderson's rights through use of excessive force or indifference to serious medical need.

Anderson was arrested in June for stealing his grandmother's Jeep Cherokee and sent to the boot camp for violating his probation by trespassing at a school.

The boot camp concept for juveniles began in Florida in 1993, and five camps now house about 600 boys ages 14 to 18.

I just don't believe that the medical examiner is something you can automatically believe. He works for the same people who allegedly killed this boy. I would prefer to see an independent medical examiner go over the facts.

I have seen this done and the resulting information can be VERY different.

Living here in Florida I have heard about these camps and I don't think I would trust my kid in their hands.

I also have to wonder if the camp was made aware of this kids medical problems, if not then how could they have been expected to do anything differently in order to make sure he was not injured?

Whatever his crime is, he didn't deserve to be beaten to death if that is indeed what happened.

Whats a real shame is more people didn't care about this boy's fate in time to keep him from becoming a deliquent and having to be sent to this so called boot camp.

I can’t see these guards beating the kid on his first day. Usually you have to piss someone off before they beat the shit out of you.

It seems to me there would be more accusation of abuse from the guards if in fact the beatings accrued. If they did beat him and contributed to his death they deserve to be tried for those crimes. We can’t have people beating our youth just because they fucked up once or twice. He stole his grandmother’s car for God’s sake. Big deal. 14 years old people! Remember?

They should get a second opinion on the autopsy although I think lethal is dead wrong and ignorant saying a coroner is going to lie because the State is his employer.

He just might be wrong.

Not everything is a fucking conspiracy! It just amazes me how everything becomes one. Insane!

With a good and sound autopsy and they find again that he had this blood disorder than the kid got himself in a bad spot with bad health. End of story!

See I didn’t even consider his color. But why should I? Poor black kid? That sounds like some kind of a poster slogan.

The only crimes they talk about in this article is that he swiped his grandmother’s car. He went for a joy ride. It wasn’t like he was going to sell the car.

Then he trespassed at a school.

Black or white is not an issue. People need to start looking at the situation and not the color. Even people like us on the sidelines.

I took the story at face value.

If he stole his grandmother’s car then she is the one who turned him in. Maybe teaching him a lesson or something.

It’s a sad case of a sick kid in a bad situation. If not and they can prove it, then it’s murder.

The media here in Florida where the incident happened makes it clear it was a poor black child with a record of misbehaving. They make it sound like this child was a juvenile deliquent therefore somehow less valueable so why be upset he is dead...

You can't honestly think that a poor black child will get the same kind of treatment a wealthy white will.

This Natalie Holloway story is a prime example, look at how much air time that story got, for a wealthy white girl missing. There are cases of poor black women missing that get no air time at all, never mind the feeding frenzy that has gone on AND is still going on in the Holloway case.

Who the fuck cares?

If a kid is doing something bad enough that he/she needs direction of a boot camp, then so be it. If someone dies as a result, then the system works.

Fucking-a, man. If you grow up showing respect instead of demanding it, then boot camp will be a breeze.

Doctor Who Did Beaten Teen's Autopsy Under Fire

Medical Examiner Said Teen Died Of Natural Causes

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The Florida medical examiner who ruled last week that a teenager died of natural causes after he was struck by Panama City boot camp guards is coming under scrutiny.

Dr. Charles Siebert Jr. is being criticized for signing mistake-filled autopsy reports on a man and his adult daughter killed in a 2004 tornado.

The mother of Donna Faye Reed said an autopsy report signed by Siebert stated that Reed had organs that are part of the male genitalia.

The mother, Frances Terry, said Siebert also failed to mention major wounds on her husband's body.

Seibert has drawn national criticism since he ruled Thursday that 14-year-old Martin Lee Anderson died last month from hemorrhaging caused by sickle cell trait.

Security camera videotape shows that Anderson was struck and kneed several times by guards.

Oh Jesus, even I could do THAT autopsy.... THEY DIED FROM THE FUCKING TORNADO, END OF STORY..NOTHING MORE TO KNOW !!

The mother of Donna Faye Reed said an autopsy report signed by Siebert stated that Reed had organs that are part of the male genitalia.

It was probably a box checking oversight or something fucking tiny like that, but she is making a big deal over it cuz news media will give her, her 15 minutes of fame to undermine the autopsy.

Well fucking oops... like I said.. DIED IN A TORNADO BITCH... END OF STORY !!

This kind of thing is becomming more common in the UK nowadays. Nothing is anyones fault anymore and everyone wants a handout at the taxpayers expense.

It seemed to start in the USof A. Ten years ago I heard about a woman in the US who put her tiny dog in the microwave to dry it after its bath. The dog of course died.

The idiot was supposed to have taken action against the manufactures of the microwave for failing to label the thing as not being suitable to dry dogs in.

I still can't believe any of it. Does anyone remember this ? Did it ever really happen ?

Dr Michael Baden asserts that beating at boot camp caused this boys death after second autopsy was performed.

"TAMPA, Fla. - A second autopsy shows that a 14-year-old boy who was punched and kicked by guards at a juvenile boot camp did not die of natural causes as a medical examiner initially ruled, prosecutors confirmed Tuesday.

Martin Lee Anderson was sent to the Bay County Sheriff’s Office boot camp on Jan. 5 for a probation violation. A surveillance video showed guards kicking and punching him after he collapsed while exercising on his first day at the camp, and he died at a hospital early the next day.

A noted pathologist who observed Monday’s 12-hour autopsy on behalf of Anderson’s family said it was clear the teen did not die from sickle cell trait, as the medical examiner for Bay County had determined, or from any other natural causes.

Pam Bondi, a spokeswoman for Hillsborough County State Attorney Mark Ober, confirmed that assertion by Dr. Michael Baden but would not elaborate, saying it will be months before the investigation is complete.

Ober said he will not discuss the autopsy until the investigation is complete.

“My opinion is that he died because of what you see in the videotape,” said Baden, referring to the surveillance video.

After seeing the videotape, the boy’s parents agreed to have his body exhumed and asked Baden to observe a second autopsy.

“I’m just glad the truth is out,” Anderson’s mother, Gina Jones, said Tuesday. “But I already knew what the truth was. Now that the truth is out, and I want justice. I want the guards and the nurse to be arrested.”

Several weeks for analysis

Baden, who was hired by the boy’s family, said it would be several weeks before the medical examiner in charge of the second autopsy, Hillsborough County Medical Examiner Dr. Vernard Adams, determines the exact cause of death because tissue samples must be analyzed and other evidence considered.

But Baden said it was clear that Anderson did not die from sickle cell trait.

Dr. Charles Siebert, who made that initial ruling after Anderson’s death Jan. 6, was present at the second autopsy and may end up changing his ruling, said Baden, who reviewed medical evidence in the 1965 slaying of civil rights leaders Medgar Evers and the 1968 assassination of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

“I think he made a mistake,” Baden said.

Siebert did not immediately return a call seeking comment Tuesday."

Whatever he had done to end up in boot camp there is still NO reason for the guards to have beaten him. Surely boot camp is meant to set the kid back on the right path, not teach him that bad choices result in a beating. Violence begets violence.

Absolutely, in fact in the interview the other day I saw with Dr Michael Baden there were some other things he mentioned about the boy that gave a more rounded picture of him, he was not as bad as the media wants to paint him.

It makes me sick how because he had been in a little trouble, his life seems to be worth less then someone elses.

2nd Autopsy Finds Boy Beaten At Boot Camp Died Of Suffocation By Guards

http://www.local6.com/firstnews/9167761/detail.html

"POSTED: 2:35 pm EDT May 5, 2006

TAMPA, Fla. -- A 14-year-old boy whose beating by guards at a juvenile boot camp was caught on videotape died because the guards suffocated him, a medical examiner said Friday.

The findings of the second autopsy on Martin Lee Anderson conflict with the initial ruling from a different medical examiner that the boy died from complications of sickle cell trait, a usually benign blood disorder.

"Martin Anderson's death was caused by suffocation due to actions of the guards at the boot camp," said Dr. Vernard Adams, who conducted the second autopsy after an investigation was ordered into the boy's death.

Adams said the suffocation was caused by hands blocking the boy's mouth, as well as the "forced inhalation of ammonia fumes" that caused his vocal cords to spasm, blocking his upper airway.

Anderson was kneed, struck and dragged by guards on his first day at the Bay County Sheriff's boot camp for juvenile offenders.

He was eventually was taken to a Pensacola hospital where he died the next day, Jan. 6. The camp security camera captured the beating, and it was later broadcast nationally.

The death sparked protests at the state Capitol, forced lawmakers to scrap the military-style camps and led to the resignation of the state's top law enforcement officer, who started the boot camp in Panama City when he was Bay County sheriff.

Bush said Florida Department of Law Enforcement chief Guy Tunnell shouldn't have sent e-mails to the current sheriff questioning those who criticized the boot camp concept. "

If this is how the boy really died then the gaurds who did it should be brought up on charges just like anyone else who would kill a child in this manner.
