phreakwars Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Ahh, Taco Tuesday !!!! My favorite day of the week !! Yes, at the Phreak's house, we have taco's ONCE EVERY WEEK. Sometimes it's home made, sometimes it's Taco John's... on rare occasions it will be Taco Bell.. But today, I decided to instead, try out the new taco place that opened up in my community.. Good ole' TACO DEL MAR !! What I ordered was a Combo Taco/Burrito meal, it came with some chips and a drink.. I found it interesting the way they are setup like Subway, in that it is an assembly line and you kinda pick and choose toppings as you go along... I was pretty impressed with the meat selections, and since I was limited to 2 dishes (the taco and the burrito) I decided to try the ground beef on the taco, and the pork on the burrito..so anyways, I had them add guacamole on the burrito and pi-co Di Callao on both, then habanero sauce on each as well... So I'm thinking "COOL HABANERO.. LOVE HOT SHIT"... but I can say to my disappointment, it was NOT very hot... although it DID however have a very good taste. The burrito with the guacamole tasted a little too "LIMEY" for me, I know people use lime to preserve the color, I do it myself when I make it at home, but it was too overpowering for me..., my wife MIGHT like it, but I like my guak to have better flavor. Other then that, with the habanero and PDC it was a pretty damn good burrito The taco with the ground beef was pretty decent, yet NOT hot... although the flavor was pretty good .... could have used more habanero sauce... The grand total for my meal was like $6 something, which IMO is about the average cost for lunch next to the $3.99 McDonald's meal... or whatever it is they cost... I rarely go there.. But anyways, I think I got my moneys worth out of it, but next time, I'll probably hold the guacamole and add extra habanero sauce. Over all, I rate them a 3/5 . . manicmonday Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Is this a chain taking off? I like the "Subway" concept. It's also probably geared toward people like me who can't take the heat. I like Mexican food the white people's way. (You know what I mean.) Hope we get one soon. Quote The dick has no conscience and the heart has no rational abilities.

DaMan Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 I love Mexican food. We have the absolute best Burrito place in the U.S. in the town I grew up in and it's only a 30 minute drive to get there now. El Faro is the best and El Famous Burrito is right behind it. The town I grew up in is 75% Mexican and there is a bar and Mexican restaraunt on every corner. Quote
tizz Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 the best burrito I ever had was in San Fransicos down the stree from City Light books. $1.50 for the best and biggest burrito ever. Lethalfind Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Unfortunately here in Florida we are limited in the Mexican food area. I would rather have a Taco or Burrito then a hamburger anyday of the week and rarely eat fast food from burger joints. I was only privileged to eat at Taco Johns once and LOVED IT !! In Texas they have Taco Cabana which is pretty good, tastes more like you made it at home then something that would stay fresh through the ice age. We normally make Mexican ourselves due to our shortage, I prefer cheese and onion enchiladas over just about anything. I make spanish rice and refried beans to go with. I like your idea Phreak of always doing it on a certain day, I think I will have to start that tradition as well. Quote I am a pathetic piece of shit leeching single mom.
ImWithStupid Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 I was going to eat at the Taco Del Mar for lunch today but it was so damn busy I went to Taquiera Guadalajara instead. I'll try it when it's not so busy. I also heard of a reason that they serve the tacos Subway/assembly line style is because the owners are also the owners of the local Subway franchise. Quote
phreakwars Posted February 22, 2006 Author Posted February 22, 2006 The service was a tad slow, but then I know how that goes, I remember when Gambino's first opened... ugh !! You could tell the people working behind the counter were a bit nervous and uncoordinated. I say give em a couple weeks to perfect their roles and they should probably do rather well. I hate to say it, but they WILL give Taco John's a good run, but they will NEVER top that Super burrito with super hot, hot sauce from Taco John's that I am addicted to. . . Usually I do give a place a month or two to work out the bugs and get routine figured out. That way I will have less of a chance for a bad first experience with either the food or the service. As far as giving TJ's a run, their biggest drawback at the current location would be not having a drive through and TJ's does. I'll give it at try and hope the best. It's always good to have a variety to choose from. Quote
RoyalOrleans Posted September 4, 2006 Posted September 4, 2006 Here around the ATL we have Chipotle and Moe's which has the Subway... build your own sandwich/burrito/taco concept. I hate them... the fucking hot tables are a melting pot for bacteria to multiply as they sit for the 'recommended' 90 minutes. The cold tables' food is discolored by the florescent lighting. There is no telling how sick a person could get from food kept under such conditions, despite the FDA's stringent codes. A date took me to Chipotle once and I flat out refused to eat. I almost wretched standing right there! Quote To be the Man, you've got to beat the Man. - Ric Flair Everybody knows I'm known for dropping science.
snafu Posted September 5, 2006 Posted September 5, 2006 We have no good Taco places to speak of. Well they used to have a La Mex that was real good but they moved a couple of times and they lost the great taste. We however have the Twin Dragons Mongolian BBQ. You pick what you want, like pork, beef and chicken(frozen). Then you throw in your veggies. I like lots of sprouts and carrots. Then you throw in the nodules and maybe some pineapple. You get a choice of how you want it. Mongolian, hot, teriyaki, sweet and sourer what ever. I usually go for teriyaki but never let them know I want hot because this shit is so hot you won Quote "You can't stop insane people from doing insane things by passing insane laws.
