ParasiteGod Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 So today in Econ, we watch this 1-hour John Stossel "special" about... OH NOES!!!! Greed. (Read: One hour of John Stossel whining about... oh. Nothing!) "You know, the Vanderbuilt mansion's dining room ceiling is five stories high. So many people make more money than they can ever need. That's greed!" This pretty much set the tone for the rest of the show. "Your lifeguard agency is a for-profit company, instead of being a non-profit organization like the Red Cross, but people hire your life guards more than the Red Cross life guards. Don't you think that we should hire from non-profit organizations because they're non-profit?" Cut to shots of RC lifeguards fucking SLEEPING, cut to shots of the for profit guards actually doing their jobs. "And you also are supervising your lifeguards from 40 feet away. Isn't that creepy?" Keyword: supervising, genius. And then he ranted about how much money Bill Gates makes, and how he's a greedy bastard even though he gives phenomenal amounts of money to charity. "Bill Gates had a good idea and everyone bought his product and he's so greedy." So... kicking ass at what you do, and being payed accordingly, is greed? Exactly how much money does John Stossel make while he bitches about people making money? I think we should ship his ass to CHINA, where he can live out the rest of his life in a perfect little communist government, since capitalism appears to be oh-so-evil. I hate John Stossel. Quote I want to report a double murder. If you go one mile east on Columbus Parkway to the public park, you will find kids in a brown car. They were shot with a 9mm Luger. I also killed those kids last year. Good bye Brooks, I like you. Now get out of here. Go home.
manicmonday Posted April 8, 2006 Posted April 8, 2006 It's the same old arguement of whether people should be so rich. If you work for it, who cares how rich you are. He's just upset he's not rolling in the dough like the Vanderbuilts are. Quote The dick has no conscience and the heart has no rational abilities.

Who cares!!! I watched the same damn thing!!! HE CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT IT IS GOOD THAT PEOPLE ARE GREEDY!!! You bitch and whine about how much he talked about greed, but there was a point to watching it: Mrs. Alderman was trying to teach us how much better capitalism is than other things, like communism. I guess you stopped listening after the first line or so, since you came to the conclusion that he hates capitalism. God damn, I hate it when people take this shit out of context!!! hugo Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 Peeples surez be dumb. Quote The power to do good is also the power to do harm. - Milton Friedman "I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents." - James Madison
ParasiteGod Posted April 9, 2006 Author Posted April 9, 2006 Ya I stopped listening because John Stossel is a fucking moron. I'm not basing my hatred on solely that one, uh, "special". Anyway. If you'd paid attention, you'd have noticed that I don't particularly care what he thinks of greed, but the fact that he's putting the greed label on the wrong things. Working and earning massive amounts of money isn't greed, it's success. Don't make your attempts at criticizing what I wrote if you didn't even grasp the basic concept. Or was that to prove a point, too? 1 Quote I want to report a double murder. If you go one mile east on Columbus Parkway to the public park, you will find kids in a brown car. He's just upset he's not rolling in the dough like the Vanderbuilts are. What about old money? Everyone goes on about the great thing we call capitalism. I don't see it. Things are still pretty much like they've always been. There's a few at the top and the rest of us share the bottom. I work like a fucking bastard at my job. I'll never be a milliionaire if I continue working there, though. So where's the payoff? The fact is most of us work at jobs which make other people rich. Does this mean that they've worked harder than we have? Talk to people who own their own businesses and they'll tell you you're a sucker if you work for somebody else. I find that a very interesting perspective. Quote

Komrade Vostok Hazard Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 I'd respect capitalists a little more if they didn't use the same tired sob story on how they worked oh so hard for "their" money. Yea sure there may be some people at the top that got there from hard work and sacrifice, but the other 90% are just sitting back collecting shares and letting the working man make their money for them (sounds a lot like those lazy welfare cases capitalists tend to bitch about all day), or they sat back and let mommy and daddy give it to them. The others are just thieves and liars like Gate$. Quote All bullshit, No Business.

Or was that to prove a point, too? I know he's putting the greed label on the wrong things, but he came to the same conclusion you did, just using a few different words. Grasp the basic concept? Ooh, Eryka, I'm hurt! You insult my intelligence! No...wait...I couldn't care less. You seem to think that you are the only one who understood that those people were successful, not greedy. Guess what, Eryka? The rest of us figured it out. And we didn't come on here to bitch about how he put the "greed" label on the wrong things. The people in the class with an I.Q. above 50 figured this out. Quote RoyalOrleans is my real dad!
Gallytuck Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 I do work for myself. It's a good thing. And you are a sucker if you work for other people. Just how do you propose everyone in the world can work for themselves? It wouldn't work. Capitalism is a sham. Nothing has really changed. I don't have to worry about running a business, my benefits are paid, I'm overpaid for my job, and I love where I work. If this is being a sucker then hey, I'm a sucker. At least I'm a happy chump. ParasiteGod Posted April 13, 2006 Author Posted April 13, 2006 I'm not basing my hatred on solely that one, uh, "special". You're retarded, Matt. Quote I want to report a double murder. jokersarewild Posted April 13, 2006 Posted April 13, 2006 Eryka, how many other "specials" have you seen? I've seen a couple, and what he says makes sense, to some degree or another. He does the same thing in every "special": "(certain action) seems to get on peoples nerves, or even hurt them. Do we really need (certain action) in today's world?"...(end of "special") "It appears that we really do need (certain action) in this world." Same thing every time. He has made the greed argument more than once. In a more recent special, he was talking about how those who actually owned restrooms that you had to pay to use were much cleaner, so greed (aka being an entreprenuer(sp?)) is good. I know most of this have figured this out, Eryka, but it is more for the kids in our class like Garret and Kyle. Quote RoyalOrleans is my real dad!
