Homeland security adviser says U.S. faces a 'persistent terrorist

 

 

WHITE HOUSE (AP) -

 

President Bush's homeland security adviser says the U.S. continues to

face a "persistent terrorist enemy" that's being led by al-Qaida.

 

The remarks by Fran Townsend at a White House briefing came with the

release of a new National Intelligence Estimate on threats to the U.S.

It said that Al-Qaida will likely leverage its contacts and

capabilities in Iraq to mount an attack on U.S. soil.

 

The report and Townsend warn that al-Qaida in Iraq has "expressed a

desire to attack the homeland."

 

Meanwhile, the White House has brushed off critics who allege the

administration released the intelligence estimate to take attention

away from Senate debate on Iraq.

 

White House press secretary Tony Snow says the White House is using

the report to "remind people is that this is a real threat."
