The remarks by Fran Townsend at a White House briefing came with the release of a new National Intelligence Estimate on threats to the U.S. It said that Al-Qaida will likely leverage its contacts and capabilities in Iraq to mount an attack on U.S. soil. The report and Townsend warn that al-Qaida in Iraq has "expressed a desire to attack the homeland." Meanwhile, the White House has brushed off critics who allege the administration released the intelligence estimate to take attention away from Senate debate on Iraq.
