Al-Qaida rebuilding, report says

Intelligence agencies see evolving threat

By Karen DeYoung and Walter Pincus

The Washington Post

July 18, 2007

Washington Al-Qaida has re-established its central organization, training

infrastructure and lines of global communication over the past two years,

putting the United States in a "heightened threat environment" despite

expanded worldwide counterterrorism efforts, according to a new intelligence

estimate.

Intelligence officials attributed the al-Qaida gains primarily to

establishment of a safe haven in ungoverned areas of northwestern Pakistan.

Its affiliation with the Sunni insurgent group known as al-Qaida in Iraq,

the report said, has helped it to "energize" extremists elsewhere and aided

Osama bin Laden's recruitment and funding.

The estimate concluded that "the U.S. Homeland will face a persistent and

evolving terrorist threat over the next three years." Al-Qaida, it said, "is

and will remain" the most serious element of that threat.

The report stressed the effectiveness of counterterrorism measures, in

cooperation with other countries, in disrupting terrorist networks and

preventing attacks against the United States in the years immediately after

Sept. 11, 2001. But it expressed concern that cooperation may wane as

memories fade and perceptions of the nature and origin of the threat

diverge.

The assessment was released Tuesday in a two-page declassified summary of

key judgments of a National Intelligence Estimate, titled "The Terrorist

Threat to the U.S. Homeland." The estimate mentioned a number of possible

threat sources, from Hezbollah in Lebanon to self-generating radical cells

in Europe and this country.

In a briefing for reporters Tuesday, senior intelligence officials said they

expected al-Qaida to continue trying to "leverage" the contacts Al-Qaida in

Iraq has established in Iraq. But they attributed the resurgence of bin

Laden's organization to its haven among tribal groups in North Waziristan,

part of the tribal areas in northwestern Pakistan.

U.S. intelligence and military officials have expressed rising frustration

with the government of Pakistan's president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf. Last

September, Musharraf signed an agreement with tribal leaders allowing them

to police the area.

In the past week, the Bush administration said the agreement failed and

officials Tuesday said that Musharraf had changed his policy. Director of

National Intelligence Mike McConnell said Tuesday that Musharraf was "moving

forces, again, into that region to put pressure on al-Qaida."

In separate remarks to an intelligence conference Tuesday, McConnell painted

a picture of al-Qaida activities and the threat to the United States that

went beyond the NIE judgments. "They're working as hard as they can in

positioning trained operatives here in the United States...They have

recruitment programs to bring recruits into...Pakistan, particularly those

that speak the right language, that have the right skills, that have the

right base that they could come to the United States, fit into the

population...and carry out acts."

Let's let the Democrats have office in 2008 and then let them invade

Pakistan (since thats what it would take) or send one US troop in to

Pakistan soil...

Its time for the US to hit the ultimate rock bottom for America to see just

how dangerous Democrats have been since John Kennedy's 13 second long heart

stoppage...

That's what happens when you have a Republican, living in la-la land,

switch from fighting the enemy in Afghanistan to foresaking that fight

and beating up on the Iraqis.

We've seen the cowardice of Republicans. They avoid wars and expect

others to fight for them. They're bullys. A bully beats up on others

instead of standing up to real threats.

If you read the story, it says North western Pakistan. Now I know you libs

arent aware of Pakistan but its got a mighty large military, nukes, and has

declared US forces cannot put one troop on its soil.

So even if there were 200,000 troops in Afghanistan vs the 50 thousand that

are currently there then it wouldnt f__king matter.

You see why you libs arent trusted on foreign policy?

8 years of Clinton put us in this f__king mess in this first place...

So to you, moving the fight two countries over to the west, makes the

most sense. No wonder shit for brains Republicans screwed the pooch.

> You see why you libs arent trusted on foreign policy?

If Republicans are an example of understanding foreign policy (bush's

was hunting pussy and cocaine in Mexican border towns) its

understandable why we are in the mess we are in.

Republicans applauded a rube in foreign policy back in 2000. It made

them giddy that we'd have an idiot in office.

Whent he Iraq war started, I was certain they had very little to do with the

Taliban. Like Gerald Ford, I agreed Bush should have stated that we did not

give a sh_t if they have wmd's or ties to terrorism. Simply violating the

cease fire agreement and continuing a culture of human rights violations was

enough to remove the crazy fugger.

9/11 was planned for 7 years while Clinton was playing with interns boobies.

I am not happy about Reagan and bush the first arming Saddam with WMDs

to use on Iranians. American arrogance now biting the US in the ass.

And what kind of asshole takes on a paper tiger like Iraq without

examining the consequences first? You'd think bush would have had some

experience with fire ants.

Snap... I almost forgot...

2 million Rwandans died under Bill Clintons watch (dont worry, he said he

was sorry)

300,000 Muslims were slaughtered in Kosovo under Bill Clintons watch

1.2 million North Koreans died of starvation under Bill Clintons watch

500 thousand Iraqi children under age 5 starved to death under Bill Clintons

watch... to which his favorite apointee said "We think its worth it."

20 thousand by his worthless bombing campaign...

Refresh me on whatever cease fire agreement you are referring to.

Just because you think it's OK to piss the tax payer money down a

financial rathole and put American soldiers in harms way doesn't make

the Iraq fiasco correct.

Thankfully we got involved in that and stopped the genocide.

I didn't know about that. A shame the world considers armaments sales

Yes. Desert Storm destroyed the Iraqi infrastructure. In times past,

we helped the enemy rebuild a country. We left them to die. And some

fucking Republicans had the audacity to think Iraqis would strew rose

pedals at our feet and call us liberators.

Yep, and the Republicans blocked any attempt to offer assistance there at

no problem, we're talking the difference between a 55 IQ

texass goober failure, and a highly intelligent liberal achiever

whoever it is, however, has to mete out some serious punishment to

the hillbillies, the greedy, selfish and cowardly wealthy who send poor

kids to die in their fuckups, the hillbilly generals who have been lying and

Wow, let me guess, you think Bill O'Reilly is a newscaster and Rush

Limbush is and anchorman and highly trained broadcaster! One cannot

even begin to coutn the disaters underr the Bush banner. Can you say

Katrina? Can you say OBL Determined to attack? Can you say Gas at $3 a

gallon plus? Food prices out of the sky? Outing CIA Operatives?

Mortgage rates through the ceiling? Gutted and raped park system?

Health care system in the toilet. Taliban on the upswing again. 3500+

dead American soldiers for no reason, plus who knows how many Iraqis

and contractors? Illiteracy at the highest level (meaning our

pResident is illiterate and cannot form coherent English sentences)!

Let us not even begin to mention the sex scandals of the Republican

Party. There are just too many. Justify everything by blaming Clinton!

Bush has had almost 7 years in office and has sent this country in to

absolute ruin, but you think he is an excellent leader! You MUST own

Halliburton stock in order to think so.

The Republicans were so busy attempting to overthrow the government they

let the US down and focus on a blowjob instead of matters of state and

foreign policy. Anybody with a lick of sense knows that.

They were so bid into dick sucking they forgot to do their jobs. GoMavs

and his Republican buddies are anti-American fucks that let the US down.

They should be strung up by their testacles.

You gotta be a low-tier, low-IQ person like GoMavs to believe his BS.
