Carousel meaning

Hey, just listened to the 2nd version of Carousel.... way better than the HT EP version....... oh well I couldn't help but wonder what the song is about? I thought at first it was like a christian song (you know, I never know why you run so far away from me) then I thought maybe the 'I' in the chorus is like both the girl in the first bit and the guy in the second bit, both wondering why nobody wanted to be around them...... lol two very different possibilities, both seem a bit strange though, I wonder what others' opinions are?

i think about the gal part:

she is not allright and can't sleep at night and that stuff however she run away from chester so he say:

''i'll never know just why u run so far away from me''

hmmm.... I'm not so sure that the guy and girl are nessecarily bf/gf although its possible...... I thought it was just two random people picked out who are struggling with problems. I wouldn't really say its a song about drug addictions, it's clear that the guy has some kind of addiction, but I think its used in a broader sense to show people with no direction in their lives or something. Hey but keep the suggestions coming, I'm always open-minded ;)

I'm not doubting you guys, but not all addiction is a *drug* addiction. There are all sorts of harmful addictions.

How do you know it's a drug addiction? If you say you know, it's a good idea to back it up. Where does it say that it's a drug addiction? If I see proof, I'll be happy to agree

Sorry, guys. I'm just curious, lol. I like to know these things.

^ I'm not sure if I agree, but I'm on the same track as you are :) I think that self-harm is another type of addiction (yes, it is an addiction).

I have uncertain views on the song. It's not one of my most-listened to LP songs.

I think the girl has a horrible secret that she's keeping bottled up inside and nobody but her friends know what it is but her family knows there's something wrong but she won't tell them and I think the guy has a drug addiction cuz it says tries to slow down the problem he's got but can't get off the carousel until he makes it stop cuz drugs can make you feel like your spinning in circles

Well, I dont think its really a drug addiction... I think that he just have a problem or a lot of them...and Im not saying that isnt possible this about drugs...I just dont think that...

Girl also have serious problems and she just dont know what she could do...she dont shair problems with others cuz this is too hard for her... Its hard to show yourself to people that you love... Yeah, I think that Im talking this cuz to me is happening the same...

I think we will never know, what LP were really thinking with that song...just in case if this is writen somewhere from them...Let me know! ;)

I think LP songs mean different things to different people
yeah, just to continue what you were saying.. songs (not just LP) mean something to the certain listener about something that is going on in their life... like for carousel.. for a drug addict it makes sence if you just listen to the lyrics... but at the same time it could mean something totally different to another listener that knows nothing about drugs or has never taken them.. like for somebody that isnt doing well in school, its not neccesarily an "addiction" to not be doing well but it may feel that way to that certain person because they just cant overcome their poor grades.. in other words an addict most likely is having trouble with their addiction, they want to quit but they are just so addicted that they need the drug to feel good about themselves, same with grades somebody could try sooo hard to get good grades but no matter what they do it doesnt work out for them, so it may have a sub-meaning, or something that you have to "read between the lines" about, not neccesarily straight forward about addiction... im not saying its about school, the point im trying to make is that songs may not always mean what they say.. something thats deeper that the basic lyrics
