Hey some new poetry that I wrote when up at Mum and Dad's place for Dad's funeral (May he rest in peace)
Just for those who don't know: the laughing Jackass is actually the kookaburra, a bird.Cockies/cockatoos: Large parrot around one and a half feet tall white, black or even pink! cockatoos have a social hierachy (?) id someone who is lower in line tries to get above the others he is usually attacked by those higher up.
Where My Mum lives you look out over a huge dam, like a lake. There is so much birdlife there, Mum and Dad began feeding them.
'roos are kangaroos. I grew up in the bush. Mum's house is right on the edge of the bush. and there are kangaroos everywhere in the early morning hours.
hope you find something within these words. For me they are about home, my culture and tradition, my land.
WOKEN UP JUST BEFORE DAWN
Woken up just before dawn
gotten up in the early morn
Laughing Jackass sayng 'G'day'
Happiness at the start of the day.
Sitting on the top step cuppa in hand
Enjoying a smoke, fog covers my land
Cockies calling, time for a feed
Get up off the step and throw them some seed
Aunt Hazel, m'sisters and Mum too
Having a cuppa in front of the zoo
Yaking and Chatting and saying Hello
Sipping on a cup of tea or steaming cup of Joe
Sun's up and the fog's all gone
A few clouds scudding, with the wind they're torn
Breeze whispering through the trees
Sitting at home My heeart's at ease...
LOVING MY LAND
Why am I chained to this beauty?
The red black and green land surrounds me
Secluded in moonlight, wishing for firelight
Steak and chops cooking on the Barbie.
Shadows and Birds, 'roos pre morn light
Dew dripping off the roof, breeze so slight
Before dawn I'm up, coffee in my cup
Cockatoo pecking line, watch the fight.
Laughing and chatting in the early day
Sadness and blues have flown away
Ciggy in hand watching my dam
Everyone has a word to say.
IF EVER I DIE FAR FROM HOME
If ever I die far from home
bury me in red soil not black loam
Make sure you tell them
Do not forget them
If ever I die far from home
If ever I die far away
Please dont forget to say
She live life her way
She lived for the highway
If ever I die far away
If ever I die old
Bury me warm
don't let me get cold
They must all be told
If ever I die old.
