Right.

(1) You're not the best rapper if you're honored on Booty-Shaking Entertainment.

(2) You're not the best rapper if you have to actually boast about your success and actually say that you're the "best rapper alive" in songs.

(3) You're not the best rapper if you lost the most important battle in hip-hop history to your ultimate rival.

(4) You're not the best rapper if you "borrowed" rhymes from other artists. I find it hilarious that you brought this up (talking about improvision):

Biggie also did that sometimes
If you've ever listened to the two artists' albums closely, it's too obvious that Jay-Z is heavily influenced by Biggie. So influenced, that he took some rhymes with him after he died. As Nas said in Ether:

How much of Biggie's rhymes is gon' come out your fat lips?Wanted to be on every last one of my classics
He also bites from several other artists. Listen to Cam'Ron's "Got to Love It" for all the original's artists rhymes and Jay-Z's imitation of flow and words side by side.

It makes sense how Jay-Z is rocking the poll here but Nas is winning by a landslide in another forum dedicated to strictly hip-hop.

I actually had this arguement with a kid in one of my classes last year.

I think Nas is better. I don't like Jay-z too much because he acts like he's the best and no one could ever beat him. Yea, he's good, but he's too cocky. I HIGHLY have to agree with DJwakkas last post.

So yea.. Nas is better. His songs seem to have a lot more thought and meaning in them. Other then [which is talent, but empty] shooting rhymes off the top of your head.

"Best Rapper Alive" . . . is definetly not Jay-z. If he has to put that out there in his songs and try to convince other people that he is then... he isn't. He's a wannabe and thats all he'll ever be.

Best rapper alive doesnt exist as everyone has strong and weak points one emcee might be one whitty then everyone else but someone may edge him out on flow and rhythmic goodness ^_^

It's biting only if you don't quote the rapper you got it from. Stealing and claiming other peoples work as your own isn't part of hip-hop. I don't know what MTV or BET or hip-hop radio told you, but biting has no part of hip-hop.

There's dozens of songs where rappers say "like Nas said, Life's a *****, then you pass away" and then usally, they elaborate more on that idea than the original MC.

Ok...you got a point there...

but it's not only Jay who does it...he just got the eyes on him because Cam did that song about him...

I have to say that the Nas album was undoubtedly better. Jay-Z seemed to focus too much on the fact that he's older and has seniority in the rap game. Just content-wise, I prefer listening to the state of hip-hop and how we can make a revolutionary change rather than a laundry list of "I'm getting older, a mid-30s rapper."

Just because you're an MC maturing through your lyrics, doesn't mean you have the better album. That's like saying the Matrix was the best sci-fi movie just because it made sense.

To be honest...I think it's hard to compare both of them...because they have so different styles...

It's like comparing Talib Kweli with T.I.

it's just not possible
