Prolog

Demons and Angels. Polar-opposites of religion. Demons sent to earth from the fiery ****, and the Angels sent from the wonderful Heaven. There has been fighting between the two for as long as time itself. Now, in the year 2099, there are troubles within each group. An Angel stationed on Earth, and a Demon stationed in the same area, a city called New Detroit, have been having a relationship, something punishable by death. It’s the job of the Najii, the new age Angelic protectors and “law” enforcers, to death with the problem before something unspeakable happens.

Chapter One

I woke up instantly when the telephone rang. Groaning, and mumbling, the man to my right got up, his jet black wings stretching, to answer the phone. “Yeah? Hello?” he said coolly, carelessly messing with his equally jet black, messy, hair. Somebody was talking fast on the other side of the phone. Afeilius was nodding quickly, trying to listen to the person. I pulled the comforter back over my head to try to get some more much needed sleep. At last Afeilius hung up the phone with the finial words of “You’ll get it later.” I heard him walk back to the king-size bed, and he gently pulled back my covers, revealing my red hair and green eyes looking back at him. He smiled softly and said, “It’s a good thing you have red hair, it makes you all the more beautiful.” I giggled quietly and asked, “Who was on the phone?”

HE sighed and said, “Louie. He said he wanted the rent. I can’t believe what has happened to the world in the past hundred years. It’s no wonder we’re living in ‘New Detroit’ because the old one was lost in the second of the Fires. I’m going to go out later, as ‘Mark’, and get my pay check. So Kyraian, what are you going to do this dine September day?” he asked with a grin so sly, it made my knees weak.

“Well, demon boyfriend of mine, I was just planning on flying for a bit, checking in on some old couples, and then just relaxing. I’ too stressed out lately to go out in my mortal disguise.” I tried to over back up, but Afeilius grabbed my hand and stole a kiss from my lips. He drew back and said, “Sounds like an Angelic plan, dear.” I laughed and said, “You ********! You stole from me!”

He simply gave me the same sly grin and said, “I’m a Demon hun, it’s what I do!” laughing, he got back into bed, with a different smile on his face. I knew this smile and knew it well. For this is how he looked before he seduced me into having *** again. I watched as his wings faded, so he could move easier. I sighed and also made my wings fade. He kissed my shoulder and neck gently, making my entire body feel the kiss, making me want him just that much more.

I sighed and said, “Not now Afeilius. I’m too tired.” He grinned and said, “I bet I know a way to make you not so tired, Kyraian.” He kissed my neck some more, enchanting me with the passion. He wouldn’t take no for an answer, he knew that if he kept going, he’d get what we both wanted. He continued kissing me, even though my head was turned away from him, attempting to resist his charm. He took his hand and turned my head to face him. He smiled and drew me into a deep, passionate kiss. At last, I gave into his captivating allure.

I awoke again around noon, the sun’s rays beating down upon me. I finally got myself out of my bed, and into the kitchen. Afeilius was still sleeping, so I decided to make myself some nice Green Tea. It surprised me that after all the hundred years of fires and wars and such, green tea ahs survived. I stretched my arms, and my pure white wings, while I awaited the tea water to come to a boil. I listened in to the conversations of some humans passing under my kitchen window. Some talked about the recent inner-city ‘wars’, and others gossiped on the current events and such.

The sound of water boiling, whistling, broke my concentration of listening to the passerby’s. the sound of the water boiling woke up Afeilius, he stumbled into the kitchen while I poured my tea. “Hey hun. That was one helluva morning. Could you pour me some tea please?” he said as he hugged me from behind, gently kissing my neck. I smiled and handed him a cup of tea. The phone rang again while I was pouring my tea so I just let the answering machine get it.

“Hi Afeilius. Hello Kyraian. This is Themus.” Said the male voice, “ You may not know me, but I know you both, and what you both are, and I’m here to tell you both some awful news. Word has gotten out about your relationship! The Najii are now being sent to get rid of you both. So if I were you two, I’d watch my back. I’ll be in contact at a later time. Oh, and drink that tea up Afeilius, it’s getting cold.” Click.

Afeilius looked down at his cup and found that indeed, it was getting cold. “Whoa.” He muttered. He looked up at me. “Who are these Najii people?” I was still looking at the phone, refusing to believe what I had just heard. If what this man, or something else, was saying, that meant we had to watch our every move for signs of the Najii. Afeilius was looking at me and repeated his question. I shook my head, not wanting to answer. He grabbed my shoulders and said to me, “Hey, I need to know what we are up against.”

I sighed, looking for the words to describe the Najii. “Since the new times, since all these things have happened to the world, *** has created a new group of Angels. The Najii. They are the new-age protectors, enforcers if you will, of ***’s will. They will watch whomever they are after till the moment is right, then they will attack or confront.” I brushed his hands off y shoulders. “It’s like they are modern-day Angelic Assassins.”

Afeilius was standing in front of me, just staring, with a look of shock upon his face. “Great…So, we have Angelic Assassins on us to kill us because we’re in love?” I nodded. He slammed down his cup and said, “That’s bullshit!” he then left me in the kitchen, thinking to myself.

Chapter Two

The feel of flying, the air rushing through my hair, my wings’ steady beat, it all made me feel so much better. I felt alive again, I felt how I did in the older times, the times long past. I soared high above the clouds, high enough to be mistake for a bird by the humans. I flew north, to one of the only places that was considered ‘Forest’ left in Michigan. It was the upper portion of the state, where big buildings couldn’t be found, and was replaced by small roadside towns and small cottages surrounded by trees. I was flying to check up on a couple that I ‘watch over’ occasionally. Of course, they don’t see me when I do this, I don’t let them.

As I lowered myself in altitude, I began to worry that the Najii might be following me to the house. The thought that they might do something to the elderly couple passed my mind as well. The trees started to outline the familiar road that was used to get to the secluded house, and my mind raced with worry. I shook my head in an attempt to get the pesky worrisome thought out from my head.

“Get a hold of yourself Kyraian.” I muttered to myself.

As I saw a clearing in the forest, I glided down towards the green earth covered in the deep reds and oranges of the fall season. I landed softly, thought my black combat boots made the colorful leaves crunch under my steps. I walked towards a trail leading towards the house of the elderly couple. The birds were singing quietly, and through the trees, I heard a sound, a humming coming from the house. A smell rose with the humming, a smell so sensuous that I was drawn to the source. I knew what it was then, the old woman was baking apple pie and was humming a tune to herself as it cooled. As the wooden cabin came into view, I saw the old man come forth from the house, onto the porch and sat on a rocking char with an old pipe hanging from his mouth.

I smiled to myself, happy to find the couple in a good condition. They were still happy living together after fifty years. I circled the house to insure that the house was in good condition for them. After I was sure that everything was as good as they could be, I turned to leave them. Though something among the trees caught my eyes. A tree had something amiss about it. I walked closer to the tree that caught my attention.

There were markings engraved onto the trunk of the tree. I knew these markings, they were from a dead language, but I knew them well. The words on the trunk read, “A warning to the Angel with the Demon. We’re watching you. Beware.” I was in shock. The Najii did follow me here, and they have given me a warning. I ran back through the path and into the clearing so I could have space to take off. Without stopping, or slowing down, I spread my wings and took to the sky. Gliding on the winds was not an option at the moment. I had to get back to Afeilius’ protective embrace and tell him about this new development.

It was dark by the time I got close to the city. As the city grew in size, I started to slow down back into a glide. My lungs filled with the familiar smell of the city and all it’s pollution. My eyes were on my apartment building, not moving from the spot on the roof where I intended to land. As I came closer, the figure of Afeilius was standing on the roof, with his wings spread wide, waiting for me to come home to him.

I landed on the edge of the roof, my wings were flapping so I would not fall from the structure. Afeilius held out his hand, and I took it thankfully. His face was smiling, but his eyes were torn. I studied his face for an answer to why, but found none. All he did was smile at me and guided me to the door on the roof that leaded to out apartment. When we were safely inside, Afeilius smiled and kissed me passionately.

“Kyraian, we have to watch our backs from now on. I received a not when I picked up my paycheck. It was in a dead language to humans. It said They were watching us, and to Beware.” He bowed his head.

I nodded, “I too received a warning today. I think they were following me because I was four hours away from the city. It said the same thing. Afeilius, I’m worried.”

Afeilius drew me into a hug and said, “I won’t let anything ever happen to you. I’d rather die than know hat I can’t be with you. I wont ever let you go. Not ever.”

I started crying into his strong, bare, shoulder. He hugged me all the tighter when he realized that I was crying. He picked me up and laid me down on the bed and covered me up. I still had tears in my eyes, but they started to disappear as Afeilius started to hum to me to try to calm me down. It was working. He continued to sing as he went into the kitchen to fetch me some tea. However, when he came back into the bedroom, I was sleeping. I was too stressed to stay away any longer.

First story I ever read in the writer's corner, and I absolutely positively enjoyed it. I love the whole idea of an angel and demon falling in love, despite being completely opposite beings. The love is interesting, and you really make your characters come to life, and so far, I haven't found one dull moment. I really like this, and I'll continue to read it and comment.

Victory for da Foxx!!

I have to admit I am not usually a fan of this genre but I will say I like the way you have toyed with the characters, incorporating polar opposite personalities as it may appear to both demon and angel which makes me rethink the whole concept of what makes good 'good' and bad 'bad' (a demon being tender, an angel being crass) and the usage of names that herald back almost to past eons rather than ahead in time... makes my head spin! Love it, so much thought has gone into this clearly and it shows. While it took me ages to read it I finally have. Nice work Foxxy ;)

Chapter Three

I woke up to the smell of eggs and bacon cooking. When I opened my eyes, the sun had not come up to greet the day yet. Afeilius was in the kitchen, singing to himself while cooking a very early breakfast. I groaned as I pushed the covers off my head and my legs. When Afeilius turned around to see me, I smiled back at him.

He went back to his cooking as I went to the master bathroom. I leaned over the sink and ran the cold water. When the water was as cold as it would go, I cupped my hands and felt the water move across my skin. When the water was overflowing out of my hands, I quickly splashed the chilled water onto my face, waking myself up for the day. I took a towel from the rack next to the sink and wiped my face off. I starred into the mirror to find myself looking back at me. There were momentary bags under my eyes. The red streaks around my pupil told me that one of my blood vessels had busted in my eye. I rubbed my eyes and left the bathroom, grabbing my robe when I left.

Afeilius was setting plates on the table when I walked into the kitchen. He smiled as he put my plate down and pulled out the chair for me. The sun had started to rise now, its’ rays were peaking through the blinds of the windows. By the time he sat down to start eating his breakfast, he was humming a new song. We ate and drank in silence, except for his humming, waiting for the other to say something to break the pane of silence.

I jumped as the phone rang. Afeilius laughed as he got up to answer it. Once he found out who it was, he put the caller on loudspeaker.

“Go ahead Themus.” Said Afeilius, while eating a strip of bacon.

There was a muffled breathing before the voice spoke. “I have new. I’ve seen the Najii. I think they are planning on attacking the apartment today. I can help you. I know a place where you two can hide for a few days. You’ll have to be in your human form though. Meet me outside in about an hour. See you then. Goodbye.”

Afeilius hung up the phone, with a somber look on his dace. He drank some orange juice as he sat down again. “You know we have to do this right?” he asked me. I hated the thought of going into hiding. It’s not like we could hide from HIM anyways, so what was the point?

“Yes, Afeilius, I know.” Then a thought hit me. How did this Themus guy know so much about me and Afeilius and the Najii, and he even had a hiding place for us. How could that be possible? Maybe he was working for the Najii.

“Uhh. Afeilius, what if this is a trap? What if this Themus guy is gonna like sell us out to the Najii?” I said after thinking it through.

He looked at me with his devilish smile. “Well, if it is a trap, then they’ll be sorry that they ever tried to mess with me and my girl” he gave his signature wicked laugh and drank more orange juice. I smiled, happy to know that he’d protect me to the death.

Chapter Four

Afeilius took my by my hand and lead me down the narrow, winding staircase that attached my fifth floor apartment to the streets below. I was in my mortal form now, wearing jeans and a vintage band shirt from the year 2004. I had saved it in an air-tight safe for the years. Afeilius was wearing beaten up jeans and a button up black shirt. I had a black leather bag thrown over my should with some clothes in it. Dark shades covered both mine and Afeilius’ eyes. As we walked into the streets, into the rushing crowds, I started to look for anyone that seemed like they knew us.

“Afeilius, how are we suppose to know what this guy looks like. I mean, we never met him before.” I said as I flattened myself against the brick exterior of the building.

“I’m guess he’ll come to us. I think he knows us. I mean, how else would he find us? I don’t know him and you don’t know him.” He said as he stood facing me, guarding me from the rushing crowds.

The crowds pushed against his back, but he was resistant to the shoves, he hardly even moved. He had a sly smile upon his face, a devilishly evil smirk. I watched as he slid his foot back a few inches and tripped the man who had just recently pushed hard against his back. The man fell, knocking into a few people, cursing as he met the drenched, cold cement ground. As the man got up and glared at Afeilius, he stopped when Afeilius pulled down his shades, and the man saw Afeilius’ eyes. He knew there was something ungodly about him. The man quickly turned around and went on his way, but not before hearing Afeilius’ menacing laugh.

“I can never get enough of that. It’s so funny.” He said as the man was running down the street.

I laughed as I nodded, agreeing with him. Even though it was mean, deep down inside of me, a part of me thought it was rather amusing. I watched as Afeilius’ eyes went over each person that walked past him. He was making sure nobody even thought of trying to do anything to us.

About five minutes later, a man walking in the crowd stopped in front of me. He had a certain presence about him that intrigued me. His shaggy blond hair wasn’t natural. His crystal blue eyes was unearthing me. He was tall, wearing a brown old fashion trench coat, and black boots. The eyed Afeilius and me, but didn’t back away or run off. I knew then that this must be Themus.

He grinned and said, “Follow me you two. Its’ time to go for now.”

Afeilius nodded and wrapped his arm around my waist so I would follow him. Themus lead us around the block, to a black truck, already with the engine running. He opened the passenger door and motioned for us to get in. when we were inside the truck, Themus slammed the door shut and ran around to the drivers’ side and got in. He looked at Afeilius, grinned, and stepped hard on the gas pedal, making us jerk in our seats.

Themus was speeding away from my apartment building, off to the outer-city limits. Most people didn’t go here because of its’ reputation for being too much like the past. The Outer-City of New Detroit was exactly how the original Detroit was. Run-down buildings, drugs, ***, murders, gangs, everything that the books have told us about the waste of society, it all comes alive when you hit the outer-city. The people there don’t care for people from New Detroit.

Themus turned down a narrow street, going gradually, cautiously. Afeilius was looking in each corner of the street, watching for any indication of movement. The street was deserted, I couldn’t see any signs of life except some dim lights in the distance. The truck rolled to a stop in front of an old metal door with rust around the edges.

“Is this it?” I asked, looking at the rusted door. Afeilius held onto my waist with his protective grip.

Themus nodded, “Yeah, but it’s not safe to talk outside. Come on, inside is where we’ll talk about the necessary things.” He got a set of keys out from one of his many pockets, and slid a key into the lock of the door. A keypad flipped out from the seemingly solid brick wall. Themus punched in some numbers and put his thumb onto a scanner attached to the number pad. At long last, the door swung open revealing the interior, but there was nothing but open space, empty.

“There is a staircase inside the closet. The only way to go is down. Go down three flights of stairs to the safe house.” Came Themus’ voice from behind me and Afeilius.

Afeilius walked in front of me, heading to the double doors closet in the back corner of the huge room. I walked quietly behind him, with Themus behind me. When he got to the doors, and opened them, we saw nothing but a black space.

“Oh, I forgot to mention. I put up a hologram to hide the stairs from prying eyes. All ya gotta do is walk through it.” Said Themus.

“Oh I knew that.” Said Afeilius with an uncomfortable laugh.

Afeilius walked through the ‘solid’ black wall, and called for me to follow him. I followed, running into a metallic bar. I looked around and saw Themus and my demon laughing at my clumsiness. Themus now took the lead, and started down the stairs, leading us to our safe house.
