My first Tat

Well after all these years of saying art belongs on walls and such I am starting to think I would like to get a tattoo.

When I was younger my biggest problem with tattoos was how crappy they looked on people when they got old, all blurry and distorted. Now that I am 44 I am thinking I should not live long enough for it to look that bad, lol.

Anyway my hog buddies have been giveing me trash for never getting any ink so I am finally going to give it a shot but being me, I can't just get anything so I am asking for you guys to give me some ideas.

I have been drawn to a lot of tribal patterns, but when considering an actual subject or object I keep comming back to the idea of the reaper. The girl I am going to use has been doing this stuff for over 20 years and several of my friends have been done by her and I like the way their work looks.

So I showed her this picture:

And she says she can use this as a pattern but she has some ideas to insert a little color here and there and some small shanges for more detail.

Ideas?

Comments?

That's a pretty awesome tat.

I personally haven't gotten one since 2003 and have been having the urge for another one for a couple years.

I'm still trying to find the right one.

I have a few ideas that I'm mulling around but haven't committed to one yet.

Since my friend and fellow deputy lost his life in the line of duty in August, I've been trying to think of something that will incorporate some kind of homage to him.

She is playing around with some time/clocks/hourglass ideas for me including the names of my children too. I will be much more selective of anything with their names included so that will most likely be a second or third tat.

This will be my first so I want it to be pretty awsome, but the tat is not my only consideration......placement is a source of a lot of thinking too.

My arms are pretty big so I have room to do this on my upper arm/shoulder but my chest and my back, one shoulder blade, are also being discussed, I think I am leaning to my upper arm though.

PS- Hey Joe, your a cop so you have most likely been through some of the same training I have, what would you rate the pain of getting a tattoo to be? I can usually block out most of the pain I get from DT like wrist locks and such and even the trainers course for ERD's was not too bad till I had to ride the belt, but the pepper mace certification, now that had me on my knees, they made me hold my eyes open while they sprayed the mace directly into them, I was a big baby on that one, lol.

I really don't see getting something sadistic. Although I'm not a faithful follower of *** I just don't' see it.

I almost got the Navy anchor with the logo FTN ( the Navy) under it on my left forearm. Thank *** never did that!

Then I thought about Just getting the anchor. Then My daughter gave me a coupon for a tattoo last year.

I really want to get my avatar. It's called war paint and it came out after 9-11. There are a few that lay claim to it but I Love it. The problem is that it really needs a black background and I'm wondering what it would look like with white skin.

If done right with a good outline and shadowing off of the outside outline, a good tattoo artist could do it right on any skin.

I'm too much of a pansy to get a tatoo, but more power to those that enjoy them.

but make sure it's something that is real important to you. My sis has a couple and she hates her first one now (a unicorn tramp stamp.) She doesn't so much hate the local or the pic, but it has no meaning to her. Her other tat's are in honor of her son, so those she loves.

and if you get something in another language, make sure you know what it really says, lol. ;)

Good advise eddo, I am taking the time to really consider everything. Not knowing what a foreign word means would be funny as **** if the tat artist wanted to screw with you, could you imagine that?

I like the reaper because it is a symbol of all things ending, the reaper is not evil or good, he is just part of the process where we all find an end one day. I had an houglass painted on my bike with the words "No matter how hard you try, you can't beat time". I use this saying on many forums as my sig and it is the motivation behind my screen name where time gets the last laugh on all of us.

I love the picture...especially how the body kind of looks like water. I actually love the black and white and don't think I'd get color, but to each his own. Also....I wouldn't get the children's names on that particular tattoo...it's too morbid. Get one for them later.

I don't like the wings...they look just kinda added for no particular reason...I'd scrap them. I'd minimize the scythe a bit...and have a hand reaching out holding the timepiece like an old pocketwatch...and there's my take on it.

I love tattoos. Don't do tribal...tribal is ghey unless you are a Native Indian and it actually means something to you. This is soooo much better. My other advice...go big!!

Oh no, the kids names will not be in this, that is later, I want to get their names included in a later piece. I really would like to get something truly original designed around a time theme with the names of my kids mixed in, but I will have to see how that works out.

I actually like the scythe, it has a worn, used look that gives the image more depth to me. You have a good point about the wings, I am torn on them actually. If the idea is the "angel of death" then the wings sort of fit in but if not then maybe it is better to eliminate them, the lady doing it says she can easily do it either way.

Ali is pretty artsy, maybe she will offer her opinion, I would like to see what she thinks on it.

If any of you guys see anything else that is cool on a reaper/time theme please let me know.

The four horsemen could be a meaningful one for you too. Horses add such movement and options for a fantastic tattoo...and of course Death is in on the ride :)

I agree with Em except I really think the reaper should be holding an hourglass in its hand. To me the "sands of time" expression/image is.....timeless.

And no color. Black and white for sure.

Well that is two of you saying no color, I think I will listen to that, do you agree with em on no wings?

You quoted Chuck Palahniuk. I've read many of his books. Love him!

That is cool, so do I, you have now risen higher in my reguard Em, a fellow reader of more than the normal meaningless fluff out there, bravo.

You ever imagine how much better life would be if we could have "not" invented the television?

I read a lot, and much is NOT mainstream. I'm an eclectic reader. I finished Rant a month ago...the guy is a sick twist...but boy is he fun :p
