My first Tat

Yep, I agree with Em on that as well. Nix the wings.
I am still wrestling with that one, she is drawing me "her version" of this design and she agreed to draw it both way, with and without the wings so I can get a better idea of the final product.

On the surface I like them, it goes to being more unique and original and it also respects the original artists intent.

On the other hand it is not as traditional, you just don't see wings on the reaper in most of the established art so it might take away from the over intent of a reaper design.......hard choice for me.

It doesn't add anything to the image. I also don't believe in taking an image and using it as is on skin. Tattoos should be original. Unless the guy actually drew it for you then completely disregard. Get something original. If you want an Angel of Death...get that. If you want the Reaper...no wings. I'm a purist...but it's your skin so. Good Luck.

Just a thought too...

Those wings will take up room on your arm that may or may not be seen. Without them you can fit a larger reaper with less fluff and filler. Just an idea though.

I agree with not including the wings, but I think if you take away the wings you may want/have to shorten up the handle of the scythe or adjust the position to balance it a little more.

If I were the artist asked to remove the wings, I would rearrange the scythe entirely. I'd have the handle facing downward and the figure holding it so the blade was positioned hanging over its left shoulder.

Then you can still keep the long, ominious presense of the scythe while replacing the empty area where the wings once were.

Like IWS said, there is going to have to be a visual rebalancing if the wings are taken out.

Well now I have her reworking this design in several ways, I liked Ali's idea of repossitioning the scythe so we are giving that a try, it just does not catch my eye as much as it did with the wings, I was really loking for something different and without the wings, this looks like most other depictions of a reaper, nothing special.

I may have to start over and keep looking for a new design.

TJ...it's your skin. If the wings are what make the picture for you, then keep them in. Another idea could be to...accentuate the scythe..make it bigger and add text on the blade...a meaningful quote about time.

Sorry...too many ideas. You are prolly getting overwhelmed. Just go with what you love.

I, Myself, am not into the whole Reaper/death theme. though Time throws in a different meaning... I have a simple portrait of a dragon in profile (a theme in my writing) and a cartoon devil with a halo...(hot stuff, by name)... the dragon is all in shades of black and I worked with the tattoo artist for a few days on that one.

my advice is to find a good tattoo artist, first and foremost, and work with them until you are satisfied with it. I imagine you want something original and personal and it is worth the time to work that out.

So did you get the tattoo? My wife got one just got a butterfly on her foot just before Christmas and I'm wrestling with getting my avatar on either my shoulder or for arm. I just don't know.

No, I chickened out, so many people were pointing out flaws fromt heir view that it derailed my own views of the image and so I decided to let some time pass before giving it a try again.

Well I'm still waiting on my consultation with the artist about my tattoo. They made me wait until the 29th. I’m glad they did because I’ve moved the spot of where I want it three times. I now want it on my ride shoulder as that’s where the flag should be portrayed. The problem now is the flag on the face of the eagle is facing the wrong way. I can either have the flag flying correctly with the ensign top left or the eagle facing the viewer but then the flag would be backwards. I never considered this before and after all these years as using “War Paint” as an avatar and backgrounds I didn’t realize that the flag is backwards. Now can’t decide which way to face the eagle.

I am reviving my interest in a tattoo again as well, I am looking through more images trying to see if another design catches my eye.

I am also looking for inspiration for a tattoo that will include the names of my children and clocks/time passing.

What would be cool is the Reaper image where he is turned slightly and you can barely make out part of the skull in the shadows. I'll see what I can find.

Okay, as long as nothing changes, I should be getting my tattoo tonight, we are getting together late this afternoon with new drawings and as long as I feel good about what she has put together, I will sit in the chair tonight.

Right now we are leaning away from the wings and she is making her own image inspired by this image.

If this happens I will post a photo, wishe me luck, lol.

Oh, if anyone sees a cool image of a clock/time representation please let me know, I am already planning my second tattoo and I want it to be about time.

I would really like something original but I would need some direct involvement from a true artist who can create from scratch. This tattoo lady seems pretty good on adapting but I don't get the feeling she has talent starting from zero.

My idea for the other peice would have images representing the passage of time and the names of my three children to represent that time passes, but we live on through our children.

Well, I got my tat but I let a friend keep my camera to take pictures of a tat his wife was getting after me. He will give me my camera in the morning and I will see about posting a picture, but it was very red and some of the details did not show well, it will look better after it heals and that I understand can take a couple weeks to get 100%.

snaf buddy, I sure wish you well, I know you have commented on many, many issues you have had to deal with and I am sure your just painting with broad strokes on the forum. Hang in there my friend, everything finds a balancing point sooner or later where you can get your feet back under you.
