Gov. Sarah Palin is refusing to accept more than 30 percent of the federal economic stimulus money being offered to Alaska, including dollars for schools, energy assistance and social services

The all-Republican Senate minority said that Palin is taking a wise course and it's important not to accept federal money that could end up costing the state in the long run. People would come to expect the programs and the state would have to pick up the tab to keep them going after the federal money ran out, said Palin and her allies.

These guys are taking some heat but I hope they stick to there guns on this.

To hear Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell tell it, Palin's decision to refuse the money -- including $171.5 million for Alaska schools -- was more about calling timeout on a hasty spending process than flat-out rejecting the cash.
"We want to have the public discussion on what do we do in two years when all of this money is gone," Parnell told reporters.

That's it Snaf. In 2 years this money will be gone. Who is gonna fund these new programs then? It's a very valid question, Good for Palin for thinking ahead for her state.

I am curious though, as to why the other 70% is ok to take.

The biggest single chunk of money that Palin is turning down is about $170 million for education, including money that would go for programs to help economically disadvantaged and special needs students.

Our education up here is just fine. She cut a pet project she loves but knows this should not be part of a STIMULUS PACKAGE! She also doesn't want the governmental bureaucracy that comes with the money. We need to take care of our own education and put in place a way to fund it for more than two years. We don't need the governmental sugar high.

She will be a spokesperson for special needy children and education.

Might want to pull your head out of Olberman's *** and talk a real look at why she turned it down.

According to an April 2008 article in Education Week, Palin signed legislation in March 2008 that would increase public school funding considerably, including special needs funding. In particular, it would increase spending for certain special needs students that Alaska calls "intensive needs" (students with high-cost special requirements) from $26,900 per student in 2008 to $73,840 per student in 2011. That almost triples the per-student spending in three fiscal years. Palin's original proposal, according to the Anchorage Daily News, would have increased funds slightly more, giving intensive needs students a $77,740 allotment by 2011.

The issue is when the federal funding runs out in two years the state and local governments, who are already struggling, have to find a way to fund the programs.

The same thing happened after Clinton's C.O.P.S program in the 90's. Departments hired extra officers under the grant and then two years later were either having hiring freezes when officers would retire not filling the position, pay freezes, tax increases or decreasing services.

Actually, no, I heard Palin repeat it over and over during the campaign. She'd say it as she was dragging her kid around like she actually cared.

Nope, ain't gonna convince me otherwise, she's doing it for her own political ambitions.
