I recommend Canon or Nikon SLRs. I would get a pretty advanced one but buy it used so it isn't that expensive. I bought my Canon EOS5 for about 300. (body only) Lens cost a a hundred or so more. In the long run, it's worth it. If it's a little outside your pricerange, buy a used package, meaning that they sell the lens and the body together.
