.. then you're not doing it right. all brushes from 4+ are compatible with higher versions. it's just, that cs2 brushes aren't compatible with cs and 7 and soforth.

big difference from 7 to cs2 tho. i never used cs. i went from 7 to cs2. cs2 has a bunch of filters, and it's got an easier layout of the buttons on palettes. and it just.. has *MORE* lol.
