The National.

I would've said My Morning Jacket in the past. Others would say some bands like The Shins or Wilco or even Okkervil River. All good choices. What do you think?

The National's sound has swayed between alt country, chamber pop, and blistering indie rock. Their lyrics are so **** good that most songs contain at least several qoute worthy lines. Berninger's potent baritone kinda crosses the line of Johnny Cash-esque, but at times has sounded like Frank Black of the Pixies with his moments of screaming madness. The National, in my opinion, have topped each of their albums with every new release. Including their latest "Boxer". Their previous album, Alligator, was such a remarkable album with every aspect that some critics were kinda unsure what to make of it. But as time passed, it has become one of the biggest cult classics that keeps building a huge following for the band. The lyrics were my favourite thing about the highly rousing and anthemic Alligator and I'm not a huge lyrics guys. However, the music for "Boxer" has taken me. It's such a low-key masterpiece with some of the best sounding drums, strings, and horn arrangements. It's got great atmosphere, and lyrics of course, and makes me wonder if their tour of Europe has something to do with it. Anyhow, it brings back certain qualities that made me love "Cherry Tree" EP so much and "Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers" to an extent. This band keeps on getting better and keeps growing on me........like fungus.

So many choices for this one....
It's got be a band that can easily qualify. Home grown "America's Band" to the extent of how the Boston Red Sox and unfortunately the Dallas Cowboys are "America's Team" and as american as good ol' apple pie sort of speak.

Sonic Youth hasn't any new material as of late. Sound wise I don't think they would fit into this one. No strings, horns, or earthy instrumentation. Same goes for TV On The Radio for the most part. As well as Of Montreal and Tapes 'n Tapes. And probably Modest Mouse as of late.

Beirut is definitely promising. Their debut placed #15 on my top 50 of 2006. Probably could rise up some spots if I had a revision as of today. The Lon Gisland EP definitely shows an improvement in their sound recordings. Very promising.

Speaking of promising, Grizzly Bear is definitely the most promising. "Yellow House" topped my favourite 50 albums of 2006. They put on an amazing show when they toured with TV on the Radio. Okkervil River is yet another band that keeps on delivering the goods. "Black Sheep Boy" was definitely a huge album for me back in 2005 and my revised 2005 favourites list has them #2 right behind Animal Collective. I look forward to their next, especially since Will Sheff has split from Shearwater and his focus is completely on Okkervil River. I would love to put the very earthy Animal Collective in there as well since they are doing things that no other band is right now. Well besides their own side projects.

The Decemberists are definitely another one to include alongside Wilco, The Shins, and My Morning Jacket.

Well everyone would disagree with me completely, an possibly even flame me (it's happened before) if I said who I think is the best American band, but I'll say it anyway.

Taproot! Great music, great lyrics, great band members, great unique sound, great album covers. Maybe not so popular, but still awesome!

I think they would deffinatley qualify lyrically
Say for instance if I was to put a random song from LP against The National. There is just a huge difference lyrically. Like as of it's night and day. Both can be depressing as ****, but two different worlds.
