Chapter 12 Continue
In the vault Three sat down near the door and started messing with his gun. “Ok, look. We're going to be in here for *** knows how long. Hours, maybe days. And if you shoot me, think of the mess that's going to make. It'll be gross. And the smell -- unless that's what you're thinking -- smell, air, oxygen. You're going to shoot me so you can have all the oxygen. That's your plan, isn't it? Ok. Well, I'm going to breathe as much as I want, because why should you get any extra oxygen out of this plan? And if you want to be stuck in the vault with a corpse of an innocent young woman, then fine. Go ahead, shoot me” Vanessa said holding her arms up.
“This vault runs on a closed-air circulation system. We won't run out of air” Three said.
“Oh. Well, what if the bullet ricochets off the ceiling and goes from wall to wall to wall and hits you right in between the eyes?” she asked.
“That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.”
“That could happen.”
“Yeah, on a cartoon.”
“Ok. Well, we're not in a cartoon, and I don't want to be stuck in a vault with a corpse any more than you do. I don't want to die, especially not like this. It's not like anyone outside will line up to save me, in case you didn't notice. But nobody wants to die with a stranger. And for what? Whatever's in that stupid briefcase?” she asked looking at the brief case that was next to Three seeing a light blinking.
Out in the lobby Chester continued talking to the leader, “You came after the briefcase. That didn't work out. You got a chance to get away, but you got to leave now. I don't think anybody wants a hostage situation. Especially since the vault won't open for another 12 hours. That’s a long time to hold off the cops. I don't think you want to attract that kind of attention, do you?” he asked.
“I promise you, we won't press any charges” Talinda added.
Chester moved closer to Talinda, standing next to her, “So I'm thinking maybe you'll leave here in a body bag, or you and your people can slip out the service entrance through the docks, and -- I'll tell you what. I'll even volunteer to be your hostage. But you got to leave now” he said. The leader turned around to face Chester, “Are you going to tell me that whatever's in that briefcase is worth you dying?” he asked.
“Excuse me” the leader said and moved passed Chester. He stopped and looked around the room.
Before he could speak up another voice, a voice from outside, spoke up, “This is the Los Angeles Police. We have the place surrounded.” The leader turned his head to look at Chester, “Well, now, I don't have much of a choice, do I?”
Outside Harrison was talking to his department after he had talked through the megaphone, “No one fires a shot without a direct order. Are we clear on that? I don't want any dead civilians, and I know you don't, either” he said.
Det. Lopez walked up to Harrison, “We got into the building through the east entrance. The lobby is sealed off” he said.
“How many people are in there?” he asked.
“There's no way to tell. But we're trying to patch in footage from the security cameras in the lobby.”
“All right, start evacuating the rest of the building. Go, go” Harrison said turning towards the SWAT team. They ran off towards the east entrance.
“Greg, over -- hey” Patrick said signaling him over.
Mark, Kristen Boren’s husband, walked up to Harrison “Hey. What's going on?” he asked.
Harrison turned around, “Oh, ***. Not you” he said seeing that it was his brother. He sighed, “Some kind of botched robbery” he said.
“At the party?”
“Yeah. As far as we know, they haven't got up to the restaurant” he said.
“Well, Maddie's in that hotel somewhere” he said since his daughter was going to the party because she won some contest to attend it.
“Yeah, so is Ravyn and Joanna” Harrison said. Mark looked at the building after Anthony said his nieces were in there too.
“Commissioner?” Det. Lopez called out.
“I got to go” Harrison said and took off running towards the Detective.
“Ok, are you in?” Patrick asked Greg as they were sitting on steps of an apartment building.
“I'm ‘The Cyber Master’, Stone Cold. No system can deny me. You should know that” he said typing on the computer.
“How long is it going to take you to get into the vault?” he asked.
“Ok -- many valuable items.”
“What, you're in the vault now?” he asked.
“Yes. An item on the top of the list was signed over by Adam Maxwell.”
“What is it?”
Greg hit a key, “A briefcase -- contents unlisted.”
“Ok, what -- what are the specs?”
He hit another key, “Silver, probably stainless steel or titanium.”
“Dimensions?”
“Uh -- 18 by 13, four inches deep.”
“That's it? There's no weight?” Patrick asked.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa -- wait. Weirdness. Ok, see, every other item has a listed estimated value, to appease the bean counters of the insurance world.”
“Ok, but no estimated value on the briefcase?” he asked.
“Patience, Stone Cold I'm getting there” he said and hit some more keys on his computer, “Ok, it does. Estimated value of said briefcase --” Patrick moved his left hand as to tell Greg to hurry up. Greg turned his head, “Priceless.”
