well goodbye to france..everyone must agree they were an utter disappointment this tournament barely scoring jst 1 goal...its the thing with france 1998 and 2000 they won 2002 they got out without scoring a goal in 2006 they played in the finals but 2008 nw once agaiin a disappointing outing

NOW the tournament truly begins, when form means nothing, and a lucky goal could mean ALL the difference, favouritism goes out the window, Portugal,spain and Holland are no longer safe, not with tournament predators Italy and Germany still there

given the way things are, teams on the left SHOULD progress, but then, you never write off ANYONE in the knockout stages(ie South korea and Japan WC02),also, spainand netherlands have a habit of bombing out now after promising alot,not to mention the calibre of the teams left promises some GREAT encounters.

germany V portugal should be game of the round, in name only though, germany are struggling and portugals attack lead by wing wizards ronaldo and quaresma SHOULD win them through, but then again, how many times have we seen teams like germany, literally down and out...lift themselves off the dirt to pull a ropadope over their more fancied rivals?

Ronaldo: seeminlgy unstoppable, top scorer this season in all competitions domestically, and a shoe in for world player of the year,will he continue his incomparable form? or will he go missing? a countries hopes lie on this boys shoulders because hes such a classy playmaker AND portugals biggest goal threat and possibly best finisher in the team
Moutinho: sporting playmaker has been linked to every top club in europe, plays the vital link role between defence and attack, naturlly gifted, given any room and he'll slice a team up with a slick pass or turn, whether starting or from the bench, will play a vital role in combating germanys tough midfield, his presence will also take the heat off ronaldo

Lahm
lays a VITAL role given shcweinsteigers suspension,not a playmaker, but gives germany flair and width, something that seems lacking in the german engine room
Podolski:germanys top scorer, a class act on the international stage, needs to keep scoring as germany look berift of attacking options and klose's seeming ineptness in this tournament
Ballack:the chelsea midfielder had a splendid 2nd half of 08 as chelsea made the UCL final, has a strong pesonality, and NEEDS to impose himself on the game if germny are ANY chance of making it,must lead from the front and inspire his troops, a class act
no real tips here, this game is hard to call, on form Portugal in a canter(2-0 at least),BUT, knowing germany, theyll make a real game of this and may just sneak through this if portugal cannot get that all important first goal

well germany would be stuffed if podolski doesnt play, other than him, it took a scorching free kick from ballack to win you guys the game, cant see germany winning if their top scorer isnt on the pitch,if at the least we should see him on the bench as the injury appears slight at the moment
i think spain SHOULD go through, but italy...well, scary where they come from sometimes, but spains pace and technical prowess will see them through, italy look too slow to effectively put a spanish side that has not only improved but MATURED at the same time to be a team that can finally end spains trophy drought
i wouldnt rule russia out, with Arshavin back in the squad, they looks great, and his silky skills are on pr with most of the dutch side, and croatia contain some stunning young midfield talents like Rakitic,Modric and Kranjcar

POR v GERMANY---portugal seems favorites here but u can never write of Germany i think if Portugal are unable to shut the game out by 65-75 minutes Germany will win they are mor consistent than Portugal imo...they might not have big stars like Portugal but i think they are more of a tieam
Key Players: Ronaldo-no question here an amazing talent if he keeps his head in the game can win the match by himself, Pepe- i think 1 of the most impressive players in the tourny better than ronaldo imo, Moutinho- always a threat to the opponent, Lahm-a great full back but can also lead a great playmaking attack, Podolski-with klose's low par performance podolski has stepped in and has scored quite some goals, Ballack- will imo lead germany, can score goals when u least expect it
CRO v TUR---50-50 imo croatio coming off an impressive 9 point streak even beating germany with some luck. I think are well disciplined. These 2 teams are the 2 teams who could cause the biggest upsets this year its a shame they face each other. Turkey coming back from behind to beat Swiss and Czech(we're the only team to come from behind to win this tourny) show that the game is 90+ minutes, the changes in tactis that the our coach made in the last half our of czech game is how we're probably gonna go into croatia game, with altintop up fron in mid rather than being wasted in right back
Key Players- Modric-not much, simply been great for croatia so far, Syrna, Olic- a player ive liked in his club for a long time i think if he plays he will be a serious threat, Arda- i think the best young player in the tourny, Nihat- was 3rd top scorer in La Liga ppl in turkey thought he was below average in the tourny bt great performance in czech match, Altintop- if he plays in mid he will be much more effective and change the match

pepe has been good in attack. but hes a real shoddy one in defence...i dont know if i would entrust him at CB
modric has probably been the star of the croatian team since qualifiers, which warranted a move to london club tottenham
croatia to win purely because they have the attack to score and are disciplined enough not to concede too many, a host of talent in their squad which mostly goes unnoticed or their names just arent household names.

russia-ONE player, Arshavin, UEFA cup winner with Zenit, vital playmaker and one of my fave players, has the skill to compete with the best dutch midfielders
spain-villa and iniesta look the mean for me, iniesta has been in good form for spain and barca, while villa is the leading goalscorerm torres and co. are also not far behind
italy-del piero and pirlo, these 2 are crucial to an italian attack tht looks slow and predictable, defence is always good so if italy have any chance of winning, itll be off these 2

I think if Italy plays at the same level they played against France, they stand a good chance.
Netherlands: No comment, should be easy as you said
Portugal: easy game.
Turkey: Judged of what we have seen a few days ago..... Turkey - Croatia is unpredictable.. it could be anybody's game
