Well maybe we could have "M" or "F" somewhere below our avatar.

Wait! I got an idea! Lets stick with the signs, BUT when you hover over it, it says "Male" or "female"... that will prevent confusion. Because the glowy signs looks the best. And if you can't remember which sign mean what, all you have to do is hover over it with your mouse.
