Nothing wrong with a good ol farmer but when ppl say redneck they're usually talking about the farmer with 2 sons sharing 6 toes and half a brain who like their women baking, their guns loaded (And their Bibles 
) and, as a great american once said; "and my homosexuals; FLAMING!!"
Its these common characteristics that ppl rag on, its a reference to a large group who hold themselves in ignorence and shoot at anything they please (well after they're doen with the ol'shootin car) It may be sterotyping to an extent (i of course don't believe all southerens are kumbskulls) but its a pathetically accurate sterotype of alot of people in the obvious states. Rednecks are backwood/trailer park yokels who live out in the middle of nowhere. They have a (possibly perverted) obsession with all or some of the following sports: Hunting, ATVing, moto-cross, NASCAR, Wrestling, tractor pulls, mud-bogging, Horse shoes, and monster trucks. Other, non-sporting things they tend to like are pick-up trucks, farm equipment, bad-tasting domestic beer, whiskey, pit/bush parties, gambling, pig-roasts, country music and chewing tobacco.
The redneck almost always drives a pick up truck, which is mainly because they're practical for farming purposes and commuting gravel/dirt roads. They're also good for four wheeling in the ditch or fields. A redneck's pick up truck usually has the all or some of the following characteristics: Manufacture date in the early 1980's or earlier, large tires, mud-flaps with either a naked girl, Yosemite Sam, Tazmanian Devil or various other characters, A rebel flag bumper sticker, a coat-hanger for an aerial, a squirrel tail in the rear-view mirror, A beer case in the box (conviently located under the opening window located at the back), Off road lights on the roll-bar, either a large bumper or a spare tire located on the front, and of course lots of mud or rust

A redneck to me is just a very ignorant, undistinguished, blue collar, white person, who lives there life at just above the poverty level.
Most rednecks are also very prejudice against blacks and most Mexicans, they listen to Tim McGraw's Indian outlaw song like it was a sermon, they fly confederate flags to be fashionable, and let there cloths (usually a T-shirt) get very dirty and have no qualms about it.

Redneck is only a state of mind. Usually poor, prejudice, southern and rural. In VA the people living in the county v. town are rednecks but the folks in town fit right in in a poolroom. Rednecks usually are packrats and keep broken washing machine and cars for parts even though they buy a different brand to replace them.
I had a Command Sergeants Major in the army that was a redneck and I always kidded him that his daddy turned a beltsander belt around his neck to polish him up for public view.
