Hey guys, recent topic of the Chat box.. PAINT

Its well known that PC is the ****, but what about cheaper alternatives?

I'm going to share what I've experienced, and encourage everybody to post up what they use, how it works, what works better, what not to use ect. Any insight that remains on topic is useful!

PC- my 450 is PC'd Cost, 600$. Been done for a year with VERY minimal wear (even where the boots rub)

Rocker Guard - I saw this used on the Jeep forums and devided to try it. Turned out pretty good, looks textured and I can't scrape it off like I could rattle can paint.

Rattle Can - I have done this, and it wears off fast. The BEST (and really only way) to use rattle can effectively is sand blasting the piece first.. the pourus surface will hold the paint way better.

Implement Paint <- Somebody?

Auto Paint (shot through a gun, with the correct hardeners) <-Somebody?

Lets get the ball rolling with sample pictures!

You can't beat the powder coatings, hands down. The rattle can works in non-contact areas. I have used a high end Sikkens automotive urethane, on a frame. It's holding up real well. It boils down to your financial resources.

Any pictures of the Sikkens, F-Red? How easily will it scratch/chip? How did you prep?

Just trying to answer some questions before they get asked.. :gr_cheers:

How well is that Rocker Guard holding up to being pinged with rocks and such? How easy is it to clean? Can it be stained by say... Iron ore dust, mud, etc...?

What I've found is that it is harder to whipe clean than a smooth surface, but still comes clean. I've use a pressure washer on it. It wont chip like rattle can spray paint, but can be re-applied like spray paint if anything does ding it ( i havent had to yet, but I barely drive the 400ex that has the frame done this way. I would do it again if I couldn't get PC.

Thanks for the info. Any specific brand you used? I want something durable for where I live and have thought about this route for some time. It's nice to know someone has actually done it and likes it. Is this something you would recommend? My a-arms have started chipping (riding behind dirtbikes) and I thought if this is PC, I want something more durable.

I'll get a picture of the can I used.. the nice thing about it, which is actually an advantage over PC, is that you can touch it up after like regular paint.

Chronic, post a link for that Rocker paint stuff. I just might do the Murder out look on my sons KX65. Good thread also!

I painted my front rims with walmart truck bed liner in a spray can...It holds up pretty good... Although some has come off only because I didnt prep my rims well and didnt let it cure for 24hrs... It has a rough feel and dries like a flat satin black...Im doing my rears tonight.. Ill take pictures also..

Keep us updated. Seems like a good way to re-paint and protect at the same time. Does it come in various colors?

I used that Plasticoat on my rear hubs, only got two trips on them to the dunes so hard to say how it holds up. I do like the fact it's "rubbery" which means in certain places on the bike, it's less likely to chip than paint or PC. Don't think it would hold up to constant rubbing like on the frame though. I have my dirt nerfs PC's and have risen in some pretty rocky / stoney places and they are holding up surprisingly well.

PPG Urethane based paints are about the best you can spray if going that route as far as durability goes. I've painted quite a bit of different things from atv frames, wheels, my downhill bikes, boat trailers, fender flairs, and pieces and parts of all kinds. My 400ex I painted 4 years ago is still holding up great. I recently had my frame powdered but wasn't happy with the color and finish so I'm having it blasted and I'll be painting it back to a bright silver. Here are some pics that were available for now...

from my experience the rubberyness is terrible. instead of chipping like paint it peels right off and stretches in large pieces. i had a piece hangin went to rip it and pulled half the paint off the rim, lol.

The paint is very durable. Sandblasted the frame.
