Cutting?

As I contemplated the nature of this thread, I could not help but notice how talking about such things can so easily degenerate into e-rage.

Socrates was quoted to say "The unexamed life is not worth living."

Case in point, "cutting", or the action of slicing ones wrist is an outward manifestation of an inner depression, rage, sadness or sense of loss, grief, strife or suicidal tendancies. Cutting in itself is not normal. The human beast instinctually has two reactions to pain: kill whatever hurt me, or run away from whatever hurt me. Now, logically, if the person hurting you is yourself, you either end up realizing what the problem is and stopping, or going entirely too far and taking your own life.

I would like to get the general consensus on stereotypes for "cutters".

From my own experiences, the worst "cutters" are usually females, aged 14-19. In my many observances, I have found that most of these females are manic depressive, victim of a secret or dark childhood. Also popular is the inability to vent anger or frustration or a sense of great loss. One female I was helping was 17 and a manic depressive whos father died and she was dumped by the only boyfriend she ever had. Rather than getting over it, the problems became cumulative and enlargened. Her ability to deal with stresses and with the sense of being overwhelmed became too much for her. She grabbed a shaving razor andslid it make and forth all up from her wrists to her elbows. The scars remain today; and so does the medical bill.

Another observance: most "cutters" are these "emo" children people refer to. These are people who concentrate so wholly on the pains of growing up, the angst, and the pain of being in the world. Most emo children are the ones who put too much faith in a crush, got the hearts stomped on and in a defensive maneuver, decided to listen to loud aggressive music, wear black attire and be emotionally afraid of being hurt again. So they become this wall of resentment while secretly they are just a scared, misunderstood kid with a knife in their hands and to them the best relief is to watch the blood flow.

One last thing: most men to not cut. A simple reasoning to that comes basically down to the mans ego. Funny, perhaps, but innately true. For instance a guy loses his girlfriend to another he really hates. What does the guy do? Cut himself to death? No. I will tell you why. Every guy, in their own mind is a champion. Every guy is a super hero with no superpowers, so in order to get his girlfriend back he would want to do something along the lines of weight training, boxing, martial arts etc etc... What I am saying is, the instinctual male sees competition to be defeated, and once so convinced of this does nothing else until the problem is resolved either way. Men are to OUTWARDLY angry and violent to cause INWARD pain. Think of it this way when a guy gets broken up with he thinks "Well, I am either going to have to beat the **** out of the guy that took her from me, or make myself better than both of them and get someone better." Whereas, a girl would think "What the **** is wrong with me? I'm such a *****, my own boyfriend hated me so much as to dump me. I don't get it, AAArrrgggghhh. I'm ****** up, I'm worthless, just a piece of **** dumb *****." Where a guy is most likely to beat on a punching bag for an hour, a girl is more likely to lock herself in a dark room, put on something like Evanescence and take a knife to herself.

Hey, perhaps these observations do not apply to you. Maybe I am just generalizing, but in 19 years of life experience, living in 5 provinces and 2 states, attending 14 different schools and being raised in a media/consumer based society, as well as having the powers of observation, I've learned a thing or two. Take what you can from my ramblings, and kids...do not cut yourselves, the ball of pain only keeps rolling until it takes you with it over the cliff, or off that bridge or to that bottle of pills. You get the idea. Just do not cut.

Agreed that men do cut less, but men do still do it. I used to know a boy who cut himself.

I believe completely that self-harm cannot be stopped just like that. I believe that an alternative coping strategy needs to be sought if the person isn't going to revert back to cutting again.

Um....I don't want anyone to get mad at me.....But i just wanted to say that most people who have never cut or have never felt the need to cut, do not understand it completely. Therefore they can't really judge ones who do. It's really an experience thing as to understanding. That's what I think anyway.

can't say i really understand that, it be the same as if someone else cut me, accept self inflicted. That would be my same thought even after i did it, Just my way of thinking i guess.

See I never liked the way peoplel say thigns like that, its like my friends use to say, "You dont know how weed feels to your try it out" that bascially promoteing weed, the way ur saying it, makes it feels like your promoting it" You dont know how its feels, to you do it!" I hung out with pot heads for most of my life, and i got a pretty good idea of how weed is, and what it does, about a good 80% of it, no i dont know how it feels exaxtly, but should i go get high of my *** to see? Same with cutting ive hung out with cutters most of my life, and i got a good feel of what that is about, should i go cut myself to see what it really feels like? See where I am coming from

i see where you're comin from. but, i think you're misinterpreting it. what it means is, if you've never known what it feels like, to have those thoughts, or actually do it, then you can't judge anything or person with that characteristic. now, if you want to judge them, then you're promoting it to yourself, otherwise, it just means you can't really, comprehend what goes thru peoples heads unless it's gone thru yours.

Forgive for not buying into the "you have to do it to understand it" argument, cutting is not some deep intellectual stimulant that only a few people have the luxury of understanding. If this argument held any weight, ******** animals and child **** wouldn't be against the law because we "wouldn't understand what they are going through."

I've never cut myself, I've never even thought of cutting myself, those who do cut themselves have some sort of emotional situation that causes them to cut. It ain't that hard to figure out. The solution is to find another way to deal with your problems. Spare me how I don't fully understand why you cut. It's the same reason you don't fully need to understand why some dude jacks off to 12 year olds. He needs to find another way to deal with his sexual tendencies.

u cant compare cutting to **** and child molestation etc...all that stuff

people cut becasue its a form of control, its like anorexia or bulemia...over eating and binge eating...self harm comes in all different forms and from what it sounds like..u dont understand why people cut

people who do it are insecure i'll admit it, i am, i used to, not anymore...i realised myself it was a waste of time and i wasnt going to let someone who hurt me drive me to something that would consequently hurt those i loved...

im sorry if this comes out kinda bitchy^_^ its not meant to be...im not trying to get u onto having a nice opinion of cutters because thats kind of obvious thats not going to happen...lol

but you dont need to phrase it so...

no one said you have to do it to understand it. i said you have to have thought about it or have done it to know exactly why. you can ramble on and on about how you're so good, that you've never thought of that, but hey, you're the one that brought up child ****.. and ******** animals. no one cares what you say, cuz you've proven all you're trying to do is start a rucuss and try to feel better about yourself, saying you've never had to resort to those thoughts.
