If you are speaking of how some State Hospital systems chose to 'bathe'

tree. I used Orff to teach patients to bathe themselves and in the
process learn their arms from their legs whether they were left or
right and also their faces.

After returning to Fairview in 1978 after 2 and a half years working at
Sonoma, I was surprised when one of my old clients walked up to me and

PS: Ratz, NOT all State Hospitals are created equal and not all Psych
techs use the same approach.
In fact, I have never seen a fire hose used to bathe a client, but the
showers back then were large, much like those found in high school
gymnasiums and held more then one person. [I do know about the rumors
however, because much like the Penal System there is an underground of
information that gets passed along.]
So while one psych tech can bathe many clients or even toilet them using
well over 60 toilets in the bathrooms, JCAH changed all that when they
set standards in their manuals. Lots of things have changed due to
government funding etc.
I do not agree however that placing clients into community care is a
always a positive thing, as one of the clients at Fairview was released
and wanted to come back into that community setting. In order to achieve
this, she began banging her head so the community home where she was
living had to send her back to her home.
Prior to that, her behavior problems were aggression, not self abuse.

Yep, I am the big mean old witch who upholds that sitting on your arse
wearing a nightgown and bathing clients
with fire hoses, and that developmentally people or even the mentally
ill don't deserve good food without salt peter in it.
It's people like Santa's little helper and Ratz that give Mental Health
programs a bad name.

I am the one who gave a demonstration of how well Behavior Management
techniques work when both SR+ and SR- are used at Sonoma. I was lucky
enough to have one of the original trainers from Pacific also transfer
to Sonoma, and there was an african american Tech working there that was
interested in learning how to control his group and train them without
the usual crap that you are proposing is 'the good old days'. The ratio
in that setting was 20 clients to 1: Staff.
My job was easy because I did it right, and wasn't stressed out during
licensing and audits where hospital licenses can be jerked and heavy
duty fines accrue to to staff members not doing their jobs.
What part of DD and MI are also HUMAN Beings do you NOT understand!!
What part of Mainstreaming do you not understand.
The fact is that while you 'most likely' rushed around in 'PANIC' mode
during Licensing and JCAH Audits trying to get ready to pass, that the
easy route is to do the job correctly in the first place .
That way your job is easy because you have already taught your clients
that misbehavior results in time outs, not goodies, and they are happy
to comply with your wishes and join in group activities which allow them
more freedom than roaming around aimlessly and starting fights with
others or staff to gain attention.
