I think at least on my part it's a conscious decision to see him on a more 'human' level, that, holy **** he makes mistakes, but he's just like the rest of us with a family that suffer when he's not around - as I'm sure he and the rest of the band have to at times. I'm sure his family really does suffer, even if he isn't a long-suffering husband with 4 grown kids, but the sentiment is still true. And given the fact we know so little about the guys in real life it's purely speculative.

And given the fact we are such Rob fans we have that extra sort of soft spot for him, where it doesn't matter even if he is rather villanous because in real life that makes him a stronger and more believable character rather than just a man on our tv screens or whatever. *shrugs*

And yes, Viking *grins* I do believe at the start of my fic I made mention of the Fort Minor song as corresponds to the families plight but *wink* nice suggestion for those that haven't considered doing so. Thanks!

Good point.

And oh, sorry, I must have missed that mention somehow...

I've got another one though, which I am listening to at the moment, Stay together for the kids, by Blink 182. It fits really well for these stories, I feel.

well im working on some future potintial chapters. but its all gonna come together with this one but its based on true events that happened a couple of days ago.

Fribby sat in the room he shared with Mel as he was doing her a favor and setting up the rest of her kit that she didnt get done. He tightened another screw in the base frame and he heard a scream from down stairs. This made him drop the wrench on his foot but he ignored it. The first thing that ran through his mind that one of his sisters was in trouble or worst his mom. Fribby grabbed a kunai from Mel's desk and ran downstairs. fribby slid into the kitchen with his weapon poised and froze.

Fox entered the kitchen and had to bite her lip to keep from laughing. the sceen was just too funny. Her older half brother with one of Mel's stupid knives poised like he was gonna kill, rav with a broom about to wack her son as he entered and sara with a butterfly net poised to catch something.

"What's going on?"

"A bird flew in the window and now is flying around the house."

Sara said in a hushed voice as something soft and small colided with the back of fribby's head. Sara made a swipe with the net as the bird flew off and sara caught Fribby's head in the net.

"Call your father!"

"DAAAAD!"

Sara screamed as she took off the net from her brother.

"no on his cell phone. he took mel out for dinner."

Fox rolled her eyes as she grabbed the kitchen phone and dialed her dad's cell phone number.

"So what's his name?"

Rob asked Mel as they shared a pizza.

"well his name's Jack, but we all call him by his middle name, so he's known as Jimmy. He plays in my band."

Mel said as she took a slug from the water bottle. Rob chuckeled and shook his head.

"Im not sure that's a smart move, what happens if you two break up? that might do something to the band."

Rob said in an understanding way. His cell phone rang. He answered it.

"Hello? what? ok ok I'll get five of them when we head home. we're almost finished. yeah, bye."

Mel raised her eyebrows and Rob was strongly reminded of himself.

"What's up?"

"There's a bird at home. it flew in through a window and your mom wants me to pick up some butterfly nets when we get going."

"A bird"'

She mumbeled with a raised eyebrow. the two then shared a glance and busted out laughing at the thought of their mom trying catch a bird with Fribby and Sara and maybe fox if she wasnt asleep.

"Did any one think to call animal control?"

Fribby asked exasperatedly as he and fox tried to use a sheet to catch the bird that had started pooping all over the place and the feathers were flying.

"They dont deal with birds!"

Sara shouted as she pounced with her net again. Rav was running around with the strainer trying to catch it. They all looked up and the garage door opened as Rob came in with the nets. the minute rob stepped in the kitchen, he slipped in the birdpoop and slid along the kitchen floor and crashed into the refrigerator. His hat fell off and landed on the bird.

"Awesome dad you caught the bird."

Fribby said as Rob stumbeled up with bird **** all over his back along with feathers in his hair. Rob cupped it in his hat and let it go out side. For a moment it was almost like they were a normal family. They all busted out laughing as Rav made to clean rob up some what as she picked the feathers out of Rob's hair.

"I swear im going grey from all of this."

He muttered as the doorbell rang. Mel stood up and left the room while the others ignored it.

awww, very cute. But out of all of it this resonated the most emotion for me;

For a moment it was almost like they were a normal family.
It's bittersweet cause you know they really arent, as hard as they try to be.But the idea that this actually happened to you makes me laugh as well, very authentic.

Can't wait for more... it's so sweet I wish my printer was working then I could read it when I'm not on the computer... *kicks the **** out of printer in a fit of rage* But for now I'm just happy enough that you're still going with it. Loving it to pieces, trully.

Awww-factor 15 out of 10. Go figure.

The next morning, Fribby woke up his sisters for school around five o'clock. Just like always Rob had left early for the studios. Fox and sara got up with their usuaul groans but as always, He had no problem getting Mel up.

"Where did you slip off to last night when we were bird hunting?"

Mel pulled on her matix shirt over her tank top.

"I went out with Jimmy again. Mum said it was alright for me to go out with him after the tournament."

Fribby scowled. He didnt like the idea of her going out with that kid. There was something about Jimmy that didnt seem right to him. Maybe it was just protectful brother instincts.

"What did you do?"

"All we did was go play video games at the arcade down the street and then got into playing Halo at his house."

Fribby smirked. He knew very well if it had to do with Halo, Mel was there. She was the only person known to take on her dad and her uncles single handedly and kill them all in one round by either duck shooting or grenade. His sisters were good at the one game that was almost male dominated. He smiled at the memory of Fox taking out uncle mike and uncle chaz before two minutes had passed in the game. Mel elbowed fribby in the ribs as she went down stairs to make herself a cup of ramen. Fribby couldnt help but laugh. He ran his fingers through his hair and stared at a picture he had stuck in the frame of the mirror. It seemed to bring a sense of normalicy in this dysfunctional world. It was a picture of them at their grandparents house doing Haunakka. He remembered how much their mum hated going over there because their grandma didnt like her. Fribby was about five years old sitting on his dad's shoulders and Sara and Mel were sitting in their dad's lap while Fribby was trying to light a candle with out burning his dads eyebrows off. He sighed. His dad was a bit of a jerk. He seemed to treat his sister fox different then any one else in the family even if he didnt know that she was really chester's daughter. Fribby then gave an even more exasperated sigh. He didnt know how he was suposed to feel about this. He was a little angry at fox now that he was old enough to under stand about what had happened but she was his sister and it really wasnt her fault.

Fribby parked the truck and all four of them got out. Mel saw Jimmy and made a bee line right for him. Fribby scanned the smaller male up and down. He certaintly didnt look like the type of guy that he wanted his sister to be seeing. He was almost an inch shorter then fribby, who was around six three. He had reddish brown hair that reminded fribby of phoenix and pircings that looked like chesters and a little bit of peach fuzz on his chin. He was a bit on the scrawny side but dressed like Chester from the papercut video. Fribby shook his head as he saw the world of chaos unfolding in front of him. He imedeatly focused on his sisters and where they were, each off in their own little world.

As the bell rang, sara sidded up with Fox and nudged her with her elbow.

"Fox, did you know Mel was with Jimmy?"

"Of course I did. I was there when Jimmy asked her out."

Sara frowned as she stopped at her locker in the main hallway. She couldnt believe that Mel didnt tell her. Mel used to tell her everything. before she became so attatched to daddy dearest.... Sara sneered at the thought. She setteled into her desk in first period and waited for her friend Jessica, who like Matt, skipped the first half of the block class. When they finally showed up sara laid her head on matts shoulder. He gave a sigh as he draped his arm around her.

"What's up babe?"

"I told you not to call me that Matt."

Even if he was her and Mel's friend, he could be pretty dumb some times.

"Is it that time?"

"No."

came the flat reply.

"Its my sister and St Jimmy. I didnt know they were going together."

Matt almost opened his mouth to say something but one look from jessica shut him up.

"How did they hook up anyways?"

"From what I heard it was from band camp."

Jessica joked making the trio bust out laughing from the inside joke.

"Seriously though, I think it was in their journalisim class."

Matt said. Sara shrugged her shoulders as the class started getting a bit loud from the group work.

"Whats St Jimmy like anyways? I never really got to know him."

"Well you know those green day songs St Jimmy and Jesus of suburbia, he is the epitome of those songs. I mean he comes from a broken home from eastover."

Sara's eyes bugged out at the mention of that part of town.

"Are you serious? that place is crawling with hookers and drug dealers. How the **** did she manage to hook up with someone from there?"

Matt shrugged.

"I dont know, all I can tell you is that ever since they started going out a month ago, he stopped smoking dope and slowed his drinking. He and his brother have to work minimum wage just to keep their bills up and keep little food on the table."

Matt said as he doodeled absent mindedly on the worksheet they were suposed to be doing.

"I mean everyone knows his dad died of heroine overdose but what about his mom?"

"shes a hooker off West blue street."

Sara suddenly felt greatful to have what she did even if she had a dad that came up truant for many things. Atleast she still had a dad and a mum that loved her.

Fox sighed as she sat in Geometry class trying to stay awake. She would rather go out drinking or something like that. Maybe she'd skive off lessons again or something. Its not like she needed to graduate. Her dad (chester) didnt an he was better off then any one else. But if she did, fribby would find out and then it was for sure that either he or mel would squeal to mum and Rob. they always treated her like ****. Maybe things would have been better if she could just go and live with Chester.

Oh, how on earth did I miss this update?!? *frowns at self*

It rocks, totally. I so see Viking's parental role coming to the fore on this one. Fox's problems with her own dad, I feel so badly for her, she's copped it wrong from day one *sobs* (sorry, there Fox) and Sarah... well *laughs* Sarah's just sarah I guess.

But nice. I like the description of Jimmy and his background. Gives him as a character real depth. I like a lot of this actually, but yeah... two thumbs way up from me on this one, hey? I love this story... can't get enough of it!

Mel paced back and forth infront of her drumset before the principal was about to introduce them as the first act in the talent show. Durring the past few weeks, Mel could count the times she saw her dad on two hands. He wasnt even out there with the rest of the band and the family. She shook her head as she felt stupid for believing in her dad's ******* pinky promise. She caught a glimpse of Jimmy who was over near the amp tuning up.

"Hey jimmy."

Jimmy halted his tuning as he then kissed her cheek.

"You a bit nervous?"

She nodded as Jimmy pulled her into a hug and the rest of the band gathered around in their huddle. Jimmy was lead singer and guitarest, Will was the DJ and back up guitarest, and Ed was their bassist.

"We all are."

Ed said as he set his bass down on the ground softly.

"Lets go out there and kill it."

"What's the plan St Jimmy."

Jimmy smirked.

"We're gonna go for a start with Numb, then into Wings of a butterfly and as a finish, we're gonna go into st Jimmy."

Mel looked out into the audience again and saw her dad comming in and sitting beside Brad. She smiled as her dads words echoed in her head as she twirled the drumsticks.

*" you have to keep it tight because it makes the whole band tighter. The drummer leads the band because the drums set the foundation for everyone else. Thats why you have to make it perfect."*

she sat down on the stool and pulled her shoes off so she could play barefooted.

Rob sat down beside Brad in the auditorium in teh school. He noticed the guitarest making eyes at his daughter.

"Alright, y'all know we're the Rats. I'm St Jimmy and we have Mel on the drums, Will our DJ and Ed our bassist. Our first song is Numb."

ROb and the LP guys sunk down in their seats. He looke at his band mates finding a pink tinge on their faces, only guessing that it mirrored his own. His ears then immedeatly zeroed in on the drums. Rob nodded as he listened to her. She was off slightly but her movements and playing were tight. It was good but not perfect. But atleast she took charge and started leading the band. Brad leaned over and whispered to Rob.

"Your kid's amazing, she's like a machine."

Rob shook his head, it was almost like nails on a chalk board to him.

"She's off a bit and her wrists are stiff."

He muttered, brads mouth hung open in disbelief.

"Shes just as good as you are."

Brad said in amazement as his words fell on deaf ears. Rob would make her play it in the basement studio untill her arms fell off or she got it right. Robs eyes followed her movements on the drums.

I'll put a little more up in a bit

This I can believe. Man, very observant. For a moment there I didn't think he was gonna show... damned absentee fatherism. But anyway, faith semi-restored. Hope he enjoys her performance considering he made the effort to show... but knowing the perfectionist as we (pretend to) do you can almost guarantee that the last two sentences are gonna ring true. Damned machine alright. Like father, like daughter *wink* Nicely done.

heres a little bit more

Rob greeted his daughter with a smile as he plopped his had down on her.

"Kiddo, you know if you play a LP song I'm gonna have you playing it untilly you get it right."

Mel smiled up at her dad.

"I didnt think you were gonna show daddy."

"Well I made a pinky promise didnt I?"

Mel smiled as she hugged her dad with her sore arms. He draped his arm on her shoulders as he steared her out of the auditorium with her drumsticks.

"You know I am proud of you. You took charge. You lead like you were out there infront of a stadium filled with people."

He said ruffeling her hair under the hat. Rav hugged her daughter, but gave Rob an icy glance. There was a strong bit of tension. They ushered the kids into the car. They then started up another argument with eachother in the parking lot.

"Robert, I dont think Mel can stand another shock like that. You are evil for showing up late."

"I showed up Ravyn. Isnt that enough for you? Mel was thrilled and she played well but I think she could use a little more practice."

"You are not going to do that to her. She is not you and she will never be you."

"I have every right to push her. She wants this as much as I did when he was her age."

"How do you know that? You are never around to see it."

"Look, I have other obligations, obligations to my job."

"I dont care, if this is how your gonna be, Maybe we need to spend some time apart."

Mel instantly jumped out of the car.

"Mom you cant do that. Dad cant help it that the band takes up so much of his time."

"Get in the car Mel, this has nothing to do with you."

"I dont care mum. I love dad as much as I love you. You cant split this family up!"

Rav was taken aback by Mel's behavior. She was normaly so quiet and reserved and stubborn.

"Melissa Bourdon I told you to get back in the car."

"I dont care I'm going with dad."

She shouted as she walked off towards her dads car. Rob ran after her.

"Mel you cant walk out on your mum like that."

"I dont care dad I'm going with you."

"*** you are such a stubborn kid."

"I get it from you."

The ride home for Rav, sara, fox and Fribby was pretty silent. Sara was in silent tears as she missed her twin. It would feel weird for fribby to go into their room that night knowing that she wasnt there. Rav snapped at them telling them to go to bed once they got to the house. Fribby clambered into his pajamas as he stared at the empty bed across the room. There was a soft knock on his door. He opened it and Sara and Fox slipped into the room.

"Fribby is mel gonna be gone forever?"

Fox asked in a child like voice. Fribby wrapped his sisters up in a hug.

"I dont know when she's comming back. we'll see her at school tomorrow."

He said trying to be comforting. He swallowed hard trying to keep from crying. This was stupid, it was tearing his family apart. Fribby knew that if given a choice, Mel would pick their dad over mum any day.

"I want them both back."

Sara said as they all curled into Fribby's bed.

"Me too sara me too."

The house was earily quiet at five in the morning. Fribby was up out of habit. He trecked across the living room into the kitchen to see his mom sitting at the table with red eyes, all puffed up from cryin. His first reaction was that she was upset about something, but then on closer inspection, she seemed sick.

"Mom are you alright?"

Rav shook her head and fribby sat down with her at the table.

"I'm worried about Mel."

Fribby gave his mom a hug.

"She's fine. I know she is. I'll see her at school today."

Rav hiccuped and tried to wipe her eyes.

"Talk to her. She listenes to you."

Rav said as she got up and headed upstairs. Fribby was left alone in the kitchen.

Fribby got out of the car as the three of them headed towards the two story building. Fribby passed by Jimmy who had a quizical look on his face. Matt was the same way when Sara just burst into tears while Hugging him. Mel didnt show up for Math class in third period, she wasnt there for lunch or her favorite class, rock III. Sara and Fribby sat in the library during their sixth period break. Jimmy came over with a worried look on his face.

"Fribby, where's Mel?"

Fribby shrugged and muttered something about not knowing.

"St Jimmy, I'm not sure. Our parents had another argument and Mel left with our dad."

Jimmy pulled up a chair that normally would have been Mel's spot.

"I'm worried."

He said as he laid his head down in his arms.

"Join the club we have jackets."

Fribby said with a pathetic ditch attempt at humor. Fribby dreaded telling Mum that Mel wasnt at school. As the bell rang, the trio departed going their seperate ways. Instead of heading to his class in the west wing, Fribby turned to the parking lot and went to sit in the truck. He laid in the bed for close to an hour before his phone went off.

"Hello?"

"Fribby."

"*** Mel I'm so worried about you. Where the **** are you, why arent you at school?"

"Daddy and I are staying with uncle dave untill daddy finds a place for us."

"Please dont break this family up Mel."

Fribby pleaded with his sister.

"Its a bit late for that, mum's already done a bang up job of that."

"Well its not like dad did anything to help."

"Dont ******* blame him Fribby. He didnt ask for this ****."

"Oh so your willing to stick up for someone who is almost never there for you but you disregard the rest of us who have been there since day one?"

"Like your any better, your always trying to play the father figure well guess what, your only my brother, you will never be my dad."

Her words stung like a white hot knife in him.

"What ever. Do what ever the **** you want, But you better call mum. Shes worried sick about you."

"Whatever *******."

The phone conversation ended on that note. Fribby angrily kicked the side of the truck bed. All he acomplished with this was a shooting pain in his foot. Mel was the last person he wanted to get into a fight with.

Sara felt as if there was an empty pit in her stomache. A sinking feeling that she was about to drop off the big hill of a roller coaster, for the rest of the afternoon, the drop never came. the ride home from school was silent.

A sinking feeling that she was about to drop off the big hill of a roller coaster, for the rest of the afternoon, the drop never came.
ooohhh, you captured the essence of this story so well in that sentence that it almost made my eyes water... to cry, yes, to cry damnit.Wow, Viking's right, the tension here is incredible. This is a nice spin to see it almost from the other side of the coin as my story had been; Rav's the victimised party trying to keep her family together - while in this one I'm empathising more with Rob's side. A very clever play indeed.

But the fact the family is teetering on the verge of an all out division is almost worse in someways than a key figure walking out - becuase it leaves a bigger hole when a child goes too. I've been there and done that in RL and I can tell you, it aint pretty.

Wow... just... wow. I'm blown away by the intensity here you've already shown. From the arguement in the car park to Ravyn stressing out at the table at 5am to Fribby kicking the wall and arguing with Mel... all of it sheer drama.

Love my drama. ****** well done.

well today I have no update for once. I'm slightly dry with it since Ive been working on a creative writing assignment for english with Red Hot Chili Peppers and green day. I might post it depending on how the story developes.

Fribby, out of reading the stories, I realized that it was only me n u that needed to have an argument so dont kill me or anything. n_n

Rav, you started to cry? I'll take that as a compliment.

Friðbjörn

lol it's ok :p

I guess that's good, if the story touched her...but I don't exactly feel good myself when people cry

Ravynlee

Yeah, I didn't cry but I was close to it. As a writer I take it as a compliment too when someone is moved in a prolific way to what you write, be it to tears or something else. Except violence. Or throwing up. But mostly everything else is okay. Means you've had an impact if only for a short while. That's cool. *wink*

Well, can't pretend I'm not disappointed here but I understand, so I guess I'll just linger around and see what comes of it. I printed what you had so far out and have been reading it over. I think it has the propensity for great things - but only when you're ready for it. If you can't/don't wanna do it now don't ruin it by forcing what's not there. I'll wait. I like your style. I'm not going anywhere (that I'm aware of) so you know you'll have a reader regardless what you upload.

Thanks.
