Continuing Chapter 35
“Ok. Two minutes. This would be a good time to book, young fella” Luke said back at the tunnel to Justus.
“What about you?”
“I'm right behind you” Luke said as he push the timer to make the bomb go off and ran off after Justus. The bomb started beeping as the numbers counted down to being set off.
“Never changed for you, did it, Cooley? You saw this train wreck as a missed opportunity” Chester said to the D.A.
“We learn to live with life's little disappointments”
“Hector Ruiz survived. How come you're not looking for him instead of coming to us and question us about the crash? You don’t know, but he might be going after somebody very vulnerable -- like maybe one of your grandkids? Or your children? Because, you know, you put him in jail. Then let's see how cavalier you are” Suddenly there was an explosion that came from the tunnel. Everyone that was waiting out in the triage area turned to look towards the tunnel.
“Hey. Where's Luke?” the commissioner asked Justus when he came out into the triage area when he didn’t see Luke.
“He said he'd be right behind me” Justus said turning to face the tunnels.
“If he's gotten himself killed --” the commissioner started to say but was stopped by Luke when he showed up into the triage area.
“Yeah, I know -- your life would be a happier place. Look, I set the charge right where I wanted, and it got through, but there's another rock wall behind it, and I'm afraid if we try to blow that one, he will be buried”
“Where does that leave Patrick?” Jen asked.
“Jen, I'm looking for him” Chester said.
“No, I mean --” Jen started to say.
“Come on” Chester said and started too walked towards the tunnel with Jen behind him.
“Chester --” the commissioner started to say, but he knew that there was no use in stopping him.
“Well, Luke, it didn't work. What are we supposed to do now?” Robin asked.
“We can only hope for the best. Patrick has better survival skills, I think, than you giving him credit for” he said to Robin.
“Help!” Rav shouted as she and Rob continued to pound on the door.
“Hello!”
“Well, this is exciting. Obviously, no one can hear us” Rav said as she stopped and Rob did the same.
“Yeah”
Rav then sat up against the wall near the door. Rob did the same and sat down next to her as he knew it was going to be a long time before anyone realized that they were missing.
“I wonder what happened to all those interns” Rav said.
“What interns?”
“Oh, we have interns down in the emergency room. It's been said around the hospital that they used to sneak up here for whatever reasons all the time. Probably to smoke -- what -- what's the phrase that you say in this country where two people -- two --” Rav started but couldn’t find the phrase she wanted to use.
“What, "hook up"?” Rob asked looking at her.
“Yes, hook up” Rav said and then started to laugh at how stupid she just felt. She stopped laughing and they sat there in silence for a while. Rav then turned to look at Rob and found him staring at her. There was only so much that she could take of Rob staring. She then turned her head slightly to the side to avoid eye contact with him. He then lightly put his hand on the side of her face and turned her head back to face him. They stared at each other for a while until Rob leaned in a little closer to her. Rav closed her eyes slowly as their lips touched. The kiss went on for about a minute or two, until she pulled away covering her mouth with her hand in shock.
“Oh, my ***” she said softly into her hand.
“There's something I should -- I should probably tell you” Rob said softly with his hand still on the side of her face.
“You know, Rob, some things are better left unsaid --” she said after she moved her hand away from her mouth but was cut off by him.
“No, no --
“Or left said the way they were said”
“No, I think you should know. What just happened? That kiss? It wasn't -- it wasn't intentional or anything"
“Really?” she said raising her eye brows.
“Yeah” he said softly.
“It sure felt intentional to me”
“No, I mean planned. It wasn't -- it wasn't planned. That's what I mean. I just -- I feel like my whole world is just -- is crashing down on me, and all of a sudden, here you are. You look beautiful, and it move me”
“Ok, well, in case you hadn't noticed, I’m not exactly insulted. I mean, I wasn't like screaming ****** murder or --”
“That's very, very true. Are you saying that you wanted to kiss me? Is that what you're saying?
“Not -- not consciously, but --” she said now feeling embarrass, cause after all this was her idol that she was kissed by.
“Ok. Me, too. You know, we -- we’ve both lived in the same town, moving in the same circles. How is it that we've never met each other before?”
“I don't know. I think we both live complicated lives. You know, you’re married -- well, were married. I don’t want to push you into another relationship so fast just right after losing your wife. This is why it can’t happen again”
“No, no, of course not. Still, don't you -- don't you wonder just a little bit what -- what would've happened if -- oh, forget it, never mind”
“No, say it. What?”
“No. I mean, there's no -- there's no use speculating”
“Well, what else are we going to do?” she said regarding them being stuck up on the roof top.
“That is -- that is very true. Ok. What -- what do you think would've happened if we would've met at a different time, in a different place?”
“Ok. Two minutes. This would be a good time to book, young fella” Luke said back at the tunnel to Justus.
