Here ya go...

On March 30, 1867, Secretary of State William H. Seward signed an agreement with Baron Edouard Stoeckl, the Russian Minister to the United States. The agreement, widely referred to as "Seward's Folly" (and "Seward's Icebox") ceded possession of the vast territory of Alaska to the United States for the sum of $7.2 million. Few citizens of the U. S. could fathom what possible use or interest the 586,000 square miles of land would have for their country. In a speech given at Sitka on August 12, 1868, however, Secretary Seward claimed he did not doubt "that the political society to be constituted here, first as a Territory, and ultimately as a state or many States, will prove a worthy constituency of the Republic."1 President Andrew Johnson sent General Jefferson C. Davis to command a military force of about 500 men to maintain peace and order, and expected that Congress would establish the civil organization of the territory
That was 2 cents an acre..

And without oil, Alaska would never have made it into the union.
Acquiring Alaska also helped us keep a closer eye on our nemesis, Russia.

"Cuz we can see them from our front porch, dontcha know!"

aaa... no they didn't even know about the oil reserves back then. I think it was gold, timber and such. Not to mention we were an outpost for an impending invasion. Oil came later.
That's right. Oil wasn't discovered until 1968, but Alaska was admitted into union in 1959.

Great. Now I have called on the wrath of Ol' Soapy.

No, they knew oil was there.... someone did. And you can bet your *** they were keeping their mouth shut about it until a lucrative deal was reached.
The Alaska oil and gas conservation commission was founded in 1955.

Now why would you start a commission like that back then, if there was no discovered oil at the time?

This brings to mind the old "damned if you do, damned if you don't" concept. Sarah has truly demanded the attention of most Americans from one degree or the other.

If she was really as bad as her opponents love to claim they would not be spending so much time trying to put her down, you only do that with someone who you fear or hate, and why would any smart person waste their life on hate? It seems to me those acting this way prove something profound about themselves instead of making any real headway against Sarah.

To a certain extent I can see where some are going with the "spreading the wealth" agruement but I see a world of difference between Alaskans getting a share of the oil being taken from "their" State and Obama taking money from everyone in the United States to buy votes and support the lazy.

The oil being extracted from the ground belongs to the people of Alaska, why shouldn't they get a share of the profit?

I am sorry guys but this is a night and day situation, there is no way you can compare Obama's "spread the wealth" to Alaska's program to make a profit off of their own possession. I suppose you think a farmer selling the corn off his farm to a big company who will process that corn into another product is the same thing too.......right?

I don't love Sara Palin...I disagree with most of her ideology, and my ears bleed when she talks, but I think she's a strong lady.

I hope her reason for resigning is benign...but sadly politics corrupt all eventually. Power and money seem to win out every time. I do think it says something about her character and reliability though. It's a shame really.

You remind me of my wife. :p

I bet you got a funny accent too A? Her accent is more of a native one and is common in a lot of parts of Alaska.

I'm shocked too as to why she did this but I know deep down she is a good person and had her reasons.

I believe Sarah stepping down is more on line with what IWS was saying.

To many Sarah has become Alaska and a lot of important things are not getting the attention they should because of this crazy need so many people have to try and put her down.

Even here on a out of the way internet forum some people like nothing more than to express their hatred of Sarah. They can't really point out a solid reason for their dislike, they give vague ideas but quickly change the subject when pinned down.

If Sarah had no intention of running for office again, it only makes sense to let her partner take over and try to run as the incumbent keeping conservative ideas in place and not set aside just because people were too mixed up in the political 'goo'.

I for one think it was pretty big of her to let Alaska get away from the mess.

Unlike Liberals, most Republicans are individuals, but I will agree that in this age of mob rule politics, a lot of people are trying to save themselves at the cost of giving up their principles.

So... we should've given up the fight for independence because Benedict Arnold was a turncoat?

Is that not what we are doing now?

Most people in the party are running scared and caving into what they previously called their values just to try and salvage a term of office. Even Bush went mostly Liberal at the end of his time in office in many ways just to try and change some of how he was viewed.

As much as I speak out against it I honestly believe America will turn completely socialist one day because our leaders are more in love with their personal power than doing what is right for the Nation.

Obama and most other leaders govern by opinion polls, when things like the Iran elections happened did you see a leader speak out right away on the right/wrong of the situation or did you instead see a crafty politician wait for the dust to settle and take the side of the opinion polls?

We are driven by mob rule now.

Mr. Contradiction speaks again.
In another post you said the GOVERNMENT WAS CONTROLLING US.

So which is it, the Government is controlling us, or the government is listening to opinions? You can't have it both ways ya know.

I'll go with option c.

You just wanna argue over anything even though you have no fukking clue what your talking about, and blame someone else. Kinda explains why the whole Republican party is insignificant any more..

You can't be this stupid.

Taking possitions that are favorable to the general public is what endears them to you. Every liberal is fawning over Obama as their lord and savior because he knows how to play them like a fiddle.

Any possition on something like Iran will have no real impact on controlling America in general so it is a "SAFE" issue to sit back and wait for the opinion polls to be sure he does only what is popular.

Even France spoke out before Obama did, several days before in fact, lol.

The concept of mob rule applies to what the Liberals are doing to entrap the hearts and minds of the general public. Give the crowd what they think they want and slowly make them your slaves.

A Government Big Enough to Give You Everything You Want, is Strong Enough to Take Everything You Have.

Dude, I'm done with you and moving on, it's obvious you need serious mental help.

Now your saying the government is listening to the people's opinions and the people are only telling the government these things because the government made them want to say these things.

Do you even realize how profoundly stupid you sound?

Ahh, never mind, I give up on you. I know that gland deficiency in Republicans can really do a number on the mind, but you need a complete transplant.

Well it is a good game to try and twist what I say into things you want me to be saying but that does not work on anyone with a basic understanding of politics.

Sticks and carrots.

Give the public what they want so you can use that as a tool to control the public. Let me offer a very simplified version of the larger concept:

Child wants a specific new toy, child begs and pleads for new toy constantly and has birthday comming up so feels sure that with the right amount of pleading he should be able to get said toy.

Birthday comes along and sure enough, the expected new toy does appear and the child is happy and feels accomplishment for a successfuly executed plan to get the toy he wanted and has fun with the toy.

Then one day he messes up and parent takes away new toy as punnishment and sets a series of requirements for the child to get back his new toy. Child does as instructed in his desire to get the new toy back and also learns to not do whatever it was that caused the toy to be taken away.

The "mob" wants a new toy too, several new toys in fact and they have what they feel is a person willing to give them whatever they want in Obama. Obama is sitting back and listening to the most common requests and trying to make them all happen no matter what it costs because for every "new toy" he can give these children, that gives him and his movement a new element of control.

Vote for Liberals/socialists and you get new toys.

Vote for Republicans/ Conservatives and they take the new toys away.

Very basic control.
